New York Shitty Slide Show du Jour: Old Meets New On Banker Street
I have long wondered— as I suspect a number of my fellow Greenpointers have— exactly what is up with this chap (who graces the premises of ABC Stone Trading on Banker Street).
After taking the above photograph this morning I found out! A very friendly employee of the ABC Stone invited me to view this rather nifty colossus for myself and the man behind it: Oriano Galloni. As his name suggests he hails from Italy as does his medium of choice: Carrera marble. Mr. Galloni was kind enough to show me his studio. Follows are some highlights. Enjoy!
It just goes to show that contrary to popular belief “old” and “new” Greenpoint can co-exist. In fact, they can help each other thrive! In closing, I will leave you with this video documenting Mr. Galloni’s show from last year.
In closing, I have been told he will be having an art opening this very evening! Why not swing by 234 Banker Street and see for yourself!

Today was full of surprises for yours truly. For starters, I received a phone call around noon from my buddy Mitch from the Newtown Pentacle. This conversation started (more or less) as follows:
Hey, this is Mitch. Want to go for a walk?
Me: Sure, when?
Mitch: I’m outside your building.
Needless to say I tossed on some clothes and off we went. As is my habit I showed him the finer points of all things north Greenpoint. This of course included the “Fuck Me” chair. Be they college students interviewing me for their assignments, friends who have not learned the good news about the curious phenomenon or otherwise I always make it a point to show them this piece of Greenpointiana. This item is, in my humble opinion, an example of what makes my community so special.
As we approached I thought I was in for another surprise. One which was not so pleasant.
Oh my god! I… I… think it is gone, Mitch!
I exclaimed. Fortunately this turned out not to be the case. As you will see.
Here’s looking at you, kid!

P.S.: On a related note I recently received an email which would suggest someone is living here. Anonymous writes:
I was past 239 Banker this morning when I saw one of the secondary doors (one of the ones between the main door and Meserole) open, and a gentleman walk out, carrying a plastic bag and wheeling a bicycle. When I walked by the door, I saw someone had taken that blue painter’s masking tape, and cut pieces to mark the door with a “239”…
If it was someone living there to make sure the place wasn’t vandalized, I could almost be sympathetic, but the number on the door makes me feel like something else is up.I called it in to 311 (who just hands it over to the 94th, and I will call the non-emergency number later myself), and asked them to transfer me to DOB to file that complaint as well. According to BIS, Full Vacate still exists on that property.
Some of you might recall this Vacate Order was served back in 2009. If not, this might refresh your memory. As far as I know none of the former tenants of this building have received their security deposits back.

Earlier this week I had the pleasure of playing tour guide for a New School student who is studying our fair burgh. I concluded our jaunt around the Garden Spot with a visit to yours truly’s favorite piece of street seating. As you can see it has been, um, marked.
