New York Shitty Day Ender: Jerzy Dresses Up For Your Love!

Yesterday I found a cache of doll-making goodies at the junk shop. Among them a tie that I deduced to be around Jerzy’s size. Well…

while not a proper double Windsor knot (the Mister cares about such stuff— a lot), I think I did a decent job. Jerzy has gloves, spats and lots of love to share! If you want to adopt this adorable gentleman email me at missheather(at)thatgreenpointblog(dot)com.

New York Shitty Videos Du Jour: Cute Overload

As you can see in the above photographs Jerzy’s eyes are clearing up and he looks a bit tired. I can assure you this is not his normal waking state. This afternoon Jerzy was quite busy chasing the other cats around the apartment, chasing himself and of course waging war with a hair scrunchie. Follows are some highlights from his afternoon “play session”. Enjoy!

CAVEAT: the following video is mind-numbingly cute. Seriously.

I cannot for the life of me understand why someone threw this little fella away like so much trash. Jerzy is quite an amazing little man. I have no doubt he will make someone’s household a lot more lively with his antics. Maybe yours?

New York Shitty Day Ender: Movin’ On Up!

To Greenpoint, that is.

After some thought the Mister and I have decided to foster Jerzy, the surviving Huron Street kitten until he gets the loving home he so richly deserves. As you can see in the above photograph he was none too happy about having to wait for the B43 bus (neither was I for that matter— but at this time and in our current financial state limousines are simply not a plausible means of transportation for the Mister and I). I assured Jerzy it could be worse: we could be waiting for the G train shuttle instead. Believe it or not, I think he understood me. He IS a Greenpointer after all.

He was a trouper. I have no doubt all the Polish ladies cooing at him adoringly didn’t hurt either. Jerzy’s a big hit with the ladies.

Right now this little guy is residing in our bathroom— much to the curiousity of our little pride. Tomorrow he will meet our “crew” in earnest. This ought to be interesting. In any case, Lisa and I learned today from a fellow cat lady named Eva that our pronunciation of Polish names could use some, um, refinement. Instead of saying “yerzy”— which is the correct way of saying this little guy’s name— we have employed a hard “J”. In other words, he answers to a moniker which sounds like the latter half of the Garden State. Although we feel pretty bad about this he doesn’t seem to mind one bit. As you will see!

After the Mister and I got Jerzy settled in we decided to go to dinner. We opted to go to a favorite restaurant of ours in Long Island City. Our reasoning was it would give us a reprieve from drunken hipster bullshit. It did: instead we were entertained by a raucous— but not in the least obnoxious— birthday party which was presided over by what can be best described as a 40-something lesbian version of Rodney Dangerfield. With a strong Queens accent. I cannot do this woman justice. She was awesome. After rolling out a series of one liners* she stopped and exclaimed:

Where the fuck is my girlfriend?

It was just the kind of levity the Mister and I needed after a grueling week. Suffice it to say they had fun, we had fun and so, apparently, did Jerzy. When we arrived home we discovered he had managed to “Keith Moon” his domicile— inasmuch as a wee little kitten is capable, anyway. So the Mister cleaned it up. Jerzy explored. And I filmed it.

Jerzy makes it clear that carrier life is not for him!

And last, but not least: Jerzy plays some more!

You can anticipate more footage of Jerzy in days and probably weeks to come. If anyone is interested in giving this very special little man the loving home he so richly deserves please contact me at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. I’ll give you the 411 about the application process.

Miss Heather

P.S.: For those of you who are wondering, the reason Jerzy’s eyes look watery is because they are being treated with medication. Otherwise, he has tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia and just underwent his first battery of shots!

*About the people she had previously dated and how much grief it gave her mother. Very funny. Someone should give this woman her own television show.

Name These Kittens: The Bed-Stuy Quartet

Yesterday I had the blues so I went for a walk. I’m glad I did. It was on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg that I learned things could always be worse. For example, I could be this guy— or worse yet, his ex-girlfriend. So it goes. Today I met some little ones who had an even rougher life… and they’re only six weeks old!

When Jay of Dog Habitat told me last weekend that they just got in a litter of kittens rescued from Bed-Stuy naturally I had to make their acquaintance.

Here they are!

These two are definitely the more outgoing of the bunch. The “crouching tiger” is the solitary boy of the litter. I nicknamed him “Biggie Smalls” because he is the biggest of the “smalls”. His more defiant companion (who Jay has nicknamed “Smudgy”) appears to be the leader of this crew, as you will see.

These two are much more shy. Especially the one on the left.  The one on the right is the runt of the litter. Given she is little…

VERY LITTLE and hails from Bed-Stuy I nicknamed her L’il Kim. Not that these kittens have names per se: they don’t. But more about that later. Here’s Jay telling us how these Bed-Stuy beauties came to be (albeit temporarily) Greenpointers.

Then Jay left me alone to get acquainted with them. We started with an ice breaker I like to call “watch the hand”.

Then we upgraded to a cat toy.

Then we had a little lunch.

But back to the purpose of this post: these kittens do not have names! For this reason Jay and I decided a contest is in order. Do you have names for this winsome quartet of cuties? If so, please tender them via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Otherwise, you can see more pix and videos of these cuties by clicking here.

In closing, here a little something for the dog lovers out there. The above lovely lass, Abby, was recently found wandering around Jackie Robinson Parkway in Queens. Luckily a good Samaritan picked her up. And by the previous I mean lucky for her and us: she’s a sweet gentle thing!

As I have (often) written before: anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. Tell ’em I sent you.

Thanks!

New York Shitty Video Du Jour: Meeting Nemo & More About The Huron Street Kittens

As I mentioned last week, a couple of my favorite north Brooklyn cat ladies (including the woman who is taking care of the Huron Street kittens) conducted an adoption event at Muddy Paws yesterday. I made it clear I planned to swing by. My purpose for doing so was twofold:

  1. The get the latest news on the Huron Street kittens
  2. To meet Nemo

I am pleased to report that the Huron Street Kittens are faring well! Lisa is still treating their eye infections (which is understandable) but they are eating on their own and, despite their humble and less than auspicious entrance in this world, are proving to be gourmands. They are thumbing their respective and very cute noses at dry food (which is less expensive), but are consuming wet food with gusto. Lisa also told me that after initially being leery of human contact (can you blame them?) they are learning to trust her. I for one think this is a terrific development. When the time and opportunity affords Lisa has promised me more pictures of these little ones. You can rest assured I will post them on New York Shitty.

As for point #2: yesterday afternoon I— at long last— made the acquaintance of another Greenpoint cutie. Nemo.

This winsome (and very inquisitive) guy hails from Russell Street and for reasons that are unclear became separated from his mother and litter mates at the tender age of one week. That is when he found his way into Lisa’s care. He has proven to be quite the early-adopter: not only is he eating wet food at four weeks but is also a stone cold killer. At least inasmuch as a two pound kitten can be as you will see. Enjoy!

Anyone interested in giving this amazing little guy a home should contact his foster/bottle mom Lisa at: lisavallez (at) gmail (dot) com. NOTE/CAVEAT: there is an adoption fee and application process. Landlord approval is mandatory.

Miss Heather

P.S.: As for the identity of the good Samaritan who stepped forward and took the Huron Street kittens home. I met her last week. She is a truly amazing woman— could you possibly expect anything less? Her are a few facts about her:

  1. She was born and raised in San Francisco.
  2. She has lived in Greenpoint for one month (who says all noobs don’t care!). Prior to that she lived in Harlem.
  3. She likes Sidecars and Old Fashioneds. This impressed the Mister TREMENDOUSLY.
  4. She is a dancer who has worked in performance pieces by the renowned artist Mike Kelley.
  5. She is a yoga teacher at Greenpoint’s very own Good Yoga.
  6. She recently had a birthday.

The latter most became the object of some suspicion to her manager when she failed to arrive to work on time that fateful day. Her boss lady, Flannery, writes:

…She was on her way to teach a 7 am meditation class when I received a text telling me she was going to be late because she found some kittens in the road.

I’m embarrassed to say that it did occur to me that perhaps she was just running late and feeding me a line that she thought I might swallow with greater ease than “I’m late because I overslept after my birthday weekend bacchanal,” but either way I didn’t mind. No harm, no foul. We’ve all been there. But when she came to class and told us the story of kitten saving, and later that night at her dance class when she told us about the loss of one of the kittens, it was clear that she really was the right girl in the right place and the right time.

We hear about people’s misdeeds so often, that I hope you might take a moment to highlight her beautiful act…

Done! Without further ado here is our mystery woman. If any of you happen see her during your Greenpoint ramblings, dear readers, please welcome Sarita to the neighborhood. She’s a keeper!

A couple of north Brooklyn institutions will be present including BARC and our very own Assemblyman, the ubiquitous Joe Lentol! I have it on very good intelligence that these maps are pretty darned neat. If you have the time and/or ability to swing by, check it out! If nothing else, it will be an excellent opportunity to inquire of our fair Mayor as to why the Center for Animal Care & Control is so destitute they are soliciting donations for food.

This item was brought to my attention by a lady named Lindsay. She writes:

Hi Heather,

I enjoy reading your blog and was wondering if you could post the following event. My boyfriend is hosting an Empty Cages kitty adoption event at his tattoo shop.

I have known the gentleman who started Empty Cages Collective for some time. He’s a great guy and is very dedicated to the welfare of animals be they furry or otherwise. Even if you are not in the position to adopt a pet do swing by 8 of Swords and give some adoptable cuties a little love— or make a donation so Empty Cages can keep up the good work!

New York Shitty Day Starter: F*ck Football, Give Me Pussy!

Today is one of my favorite days of the year: Super Bowl Sunday. No, I’m not preparing copious amounts of crap food and securing large quantities of beer to consume while “watching the game”. I like Super Bowl Sunday because a great many people are engaged in the aforementioned activities and I can walk the streets of my fair neighborhood in solitude. I like my “alone time”.

I also like cats. If you like cats and don’t particularly care about football why not swing by PS9 tomorrow and meet a few of north Brooklyn’s finest felines?

Today from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m. Greenpoint’s very own Empty Cages Collective will be hosting an adoption event there!

Cat & Kitten Adoption Event
February 7, 2010 from 12:30 – 5:30 p.m.
PS9 Pet Supply
169 North 9 Street
Brooklyn, New York 11211

In closing, last night I had the pleasure of accompanying a good buddy of mine to meet a trio of very winsome Bronx kittens who were rescued from a kill shelter on New Year’s Eve.

Meet Taittinger…

and his brother Dom. As you can see it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between them!

They are very curious kittens…

and for this reason they, along with their sis Cristal (as seen above), were almost impossible to film!

Especially when she claimed my Kittycam as her own!

Until Taittinger took an interest in a bowl of pistachios. The Mister encouraged this behavior (hey, for once he wasn’t encouraging cats to trash our living room) and well, the rest is what it is…

Faster pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Anyone interested in adopting Dom, Tate or Cristal should contact the ladies of North Brooklyn Cats via flickr by clicking here and/or here.

TODAY: Cat & Kitten Adoption Event at Muddy Paws

Today from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. some of my favorite north Brooklyn cat ladies will be having an adoption event at Williamspoint’s very own Muddy Paws. I have it on very good intelligence the lass you see to the left, Cristal, and her fellow bottle babies Dom and Taittinger will be among the cats and kittens wishing to make the acquaintance of someone (perhaps you?) who will give them a loving, lasting home. Lest you are wondering why this trio is named after champagne, I will tell you: they were rescued from a kill shelter on New Year’s Eve. Why not swing by and say “Hi”? Who knows, you might make a new feline friend— or two?

North Brooklyn Cats Adoption Event

In closing, I will leave you with this footage of Cristal, Dom and Taittinger with their foster mom: a pup named “Spoto”. Be sure to listen for Dom’s ferocious growl at the very end. Too cute!
