A lady named Hannah writes:

Hey Miss Heather,
Any idea what’s going in the Donia Cafe space? I saw them working on it this weekend.

Since it was downright lovely out I decided to swing by today and see what gives. It would appear that Dobeki, which is located at 199 Grand Street, is opening a second location. Granted, I have only eaten at this establishment once, but it was quite enjoyable (if a mite bit pricey). It’ll be interested to see if this establishment “sticks”. In my recollection this will be the fourth such restaurant to grace this location in the last six years. Hmm…

A Donia Cafe Update: Not So Fast…

Today I swung by Donia Cafe to see if it was— as a commenter recently indicated— in fact, open for business. First up, the bad news:

Donia Cafe is not open— just yet. But I noticed signs of activity and knocked on the door. A very nice man (who I presume to be the owner) answered. I asked him when they were slated to open. Now the good news: he said Donia will open this upcoming Tuesday— and was nice enough to give me a menu (which you can get a sneak peek of by clicking here)!

If my what I found in my comment queue last night is true it would appear that Donia Cafe (as seen above) is slated to open at long last this upcoming weekend! danieldantastic keeps it short and sweet when he comments (on this post):

It’s opening this weekend!

Coming To 85 Driggs Avenue: Donia Cafe

My buddy over at Brooklyn Imbecile beat me to the punch on this one. He writes:

Back in early February, I posted an item wondering what was going down at Greenpoint’s least consistently open cafe on the corner of Driggs Avenue & Monitor Street.  There have been power tools going and lights on inside ever since and now we know that yet another cafe is, “Opening Soon”.   Donia sounds Italian to me, like a form of Donna.  I wouldn’t get your hopes up. They may be “Opening Soon”, but based on this location’s past, it may be closing soon, too.

Methinks Donia will be Middle Eastern fare. Here’s why:

  1. The permits issued for this property.
  2. I have found no liquor license applications for this property whatsoever. Muslims disdain serving spirits (which is understandable given their beliefs).
  3. The Greenpoint Law of (over)Abundance: we have a falafel/kebab cart on Noble Street, Mediterranean Shawarma and God Bless Deli on Manhattan Avenue both; Kestane Kebab on Nassau Avenue and Bagels On The Run, once again on Manhattan Avenue. The latter-most is renovating and will be serving Gyro goodness.

It is only natural that Donia Cafe will be a Middle Eastern restaurant. Not that I am complaining, mind you. My falafels are exploding with delight!

In any case I suspect the Brooklyn Imbecile and I agree that we hope this place sticks.*

*If it is Italian, I buy. It if is Middle Eastern the Imbecile buys! F*ck it, I’ll buy either way.

Greenpoint Gets A Little More Caffeinated

Although I did not have the time to check out this establishment yesterday (I was in a rush to get to the new and improved Cup Of Joe’s* to order a blueberry pie for the Mister) I wanted my fellow Greenpointers to know the space formerly occupied by Brooklynski has— at long last— a new tenant: Lucky Shot Espresso. I suspect I speak for many when I say this establishment (Cup of Joe’s and Boneshakers) are much needed additions to this seriously under-serviced section of Greenpoint.

If anyone reading this post has given Lucky Shot a shot and would like to share his/her experience please do so in the comments. I would love to hear what you have to say! Thanks.

A Greenpoint Blind Item: What’s Up At 85 Driggs Avenue?

piethumbnailA number of you who reside around McGolrick Park have probably noticed that business has not been as usual (if “usual” it ever was— it’s always been closed when I have walked by) down at Cup of Joes. This is because it isn’t: the space has been sublet to a new business.  More specifically one operated by a very talented baker, fellow Greenpointer and all-around very nice person (whose sumptuous product can be seen at left).

Anyone care to guess who it is?

The more impatient among you can get the reveal by clicking here. Or better yet— why not head down to 85 Driggs Avenue and see for yourself. Trust me: TASTING IS TRULY BELIEVING!
