Greenpoint Photo Du Jour: Coming Soon
For those of you who may be wondering (as I was) if they meant Poles or poles, their web site clears up any confusion on that front. This, “Brooklyn’s Finest Pole Dancing Studio” (with pretty darned awesome logo to match, it appears to be based off of a Caduceus — Ed. Note) , is slated to open August 4th. So any/all who might be interested should mark his/her calendars. Oh yeah: they also offer pole parties…

Spotted At 832 Manhattan Avenue: Activity
I have good and bad news to share with you, dear readers. We’ll start with the good news first: the owner of said property has assured me he is going to leave this store’s distinctive (and downright lovely) front intact. And now the bad news: this will be yet another cell phone store. Verizon is set to make its debut on Manhattan Avenue. For those of you who are keeping count, this will be the fifth establishment located in this general area which offers this product. Here are the other four.
821 Manhattan Avenue (NOTE: Sprint has relocated to another space Manhattan Avenue, as you will see)
771 Manhattan Avenue
760 Manhattan Avenue

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: For Whom The Bells Toll
A chap named Rich writes:
Hey Heather. I don’t know if you noticed but the bells started ringing Friday night by some miracle. Do you have any info as to how, why? etc? I doubt they raised the 10k in a few short weeks. I look forward to you posting something about it because hearing the bells brought me such joy.
Today I kept my ears open and sure enough: they were back! But don’t take my word for it. Hearing is believing!
Needless to say I will have to get to the bottom of this fortuitous turn of events! In the meantime if anyone reading this has the 411 on what happened do share via comments or email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com.
Hallelujah!

Reader Comments du Jour: Regarding St. Anthony’s ChipIn Page
As I announced last week, the ChipIn page for St. Anthony’s Church is up. One commenter, nobikesonfance, noted that no contributions had been made and had some questions. Here they are:
Just wanted to confirm. The Chipin link is the official St. Anthony’s online contribution method? I was going to make a contribution but saw that the amount was still at $0 and wasn’t sure if it was being used.
I have been told by the woman who has set up this page (and put me in touch with St. Anthony’s in the first place), Laura, that this page has been de-bugged and two people have donated no less that $100 each! She writes:
Hi Everyone,
The ChipIn page is up and running and the donations are already coming in! It’s so great to see the community rally around this cause. As Heather mentioned I am a parishoner at St. Anthony’s, but almost more importantly a fellow Greenpointer who misses things like this that make our community unique.
If there is anything I can do to help you spread the word about this project, please let me know!
So there have you.
Miss Heather
LAST GASP: An Update Regarding St. Anthony’s
A number of people have voiced interest in making online contributions so as to get St. Anthony’s bells back a’ ringing. I am pleased to announce a parishioner (and tipster) has erected a ChipIn page for just this purpose! Laura writes:
So, I still have alot of work to do on this (can do it Monday evening on a train ride back to the city) but a ChipIn page is up and running to raise funds for the bells!
What’s good about ChipIn is that it has a counter and shows how close we are to reaching the goal (I said $10K) and has a widget that bloggers and websites can add to their pages and anyone can add to Facebook. I attached some code if you want to try it out…
Obviously there are still some refinements which need to be made— but without further ado here it is! Help spread the word!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Fire At 832 Manhattan Avenue?
Filed under: 11222, Bloomblight, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Peter (who sent me the above photos) writes:
hello miss heather-
I was having coffee this morning and happened to notice an enormous cloud of blackish smoke pass by my window on Leonard Street. It appeared to be a pretty serious fire on Manhattan Ave near Calyer that had both the entire neighborhood and what seemed like the entire NYC fire department on the scene. Attached are some iphone pictures of what was going on. I emailed them from my phone so some might be sideways. My apologies.
We happened to be home today, and saw the smoke from the fire right as we were leaving the newly re-opened 3-Decker Restaurant after breakfast. (BTW, I can’t really make out anything different about the diner…can you?)We got there right after fire trucks arrived, and witnessed a somewhat dramatic rescue of 2 hipsters climbing down the truck ladder from their 3rd story window.
We initially thought that the fire was mainly on the roof, from that crappy addition on top of the building, but it appeared that the firemen were concentrating on the empty 2nd floor apartment, which looked like it was in the midst of a renovation.
It looked like total apartment destruction for those unhappy 3rd floor residents. We hope they had renter’s insurance. Their cat almost jumped out of the 3rd floor window, but was barely stopped by a fireman and a window screen. Sad situation. Seems like that landlord is the type of guy to do a shoddy renovation, so probably an electrical fire?
