Found On Milton Street: A Real Cutie
This handsome fellow (a small male dog with “beagle like markings— a rat terrier mix perhaps?) was found on Milton Street yesterday by a very nice lady named Teresa. If you know to whom this chap belongs please give the folks at Dog Habitat (where he is safe and sound) a call at: (718) 710 – 0707
Thanks!
UPDATE, 11:18 a.m.: Teresa is the bearer of VERY good news! She writes:
Post it as a happy ending – his owners’ “missing!” flyer crossed paths with our “found!” flyer. As I type they’re probably picking him up at Unleash right now. His name is Boo! I woke up in the night thinking about him. I am tickled silly that he’s going home. He’s a really sweet little guy! Now I have to email everyone…

Help Wanted: Foster Mom (Or Dad)
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
This little one (which the folks at Dog Habitat have named “Socks”) was recently found in a backyard in Greenpoint. He is three weeks old and I have been told was in pretty rough shape. Thanks to our very own Greenpoint vet and the folks of Dog Habitat he is doing much better— but still needs the help of a very special person. May be you? Jay writes:
Heather,
Do you know any body who could help care for a 3 week-old kitten? we have formula and medication from his visit to the vet. we just need an extra pair of hands to help feed the little guy… we can take care of him tonight and tomorrow if there’s someone who can switch off for the weekend.
It goes without saying that someone who has experience with neo-natal cats is preferred. If you have what it takes please contact the folks at Dog Habitat via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. They can also be reached via telephone at (347) 689 – 4000.
Thanks!

Adoptable Cuties: It’s Raining Cats At Dog Habitat!
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Jay Lombard writes (in an email entitled “Kittens, Kittens and MORE Kittens”):
It’s raining cats at Dog Habitat these days. We had 6 kittens dropped off this weekend. 2 from one litter, 3 from another and one orphan. All need to get examined by a vet and we’re trying to line up an ASPCA van. We’ll probably have an adoption event for these little tykes this weekend or the following. Let me know if you want to come by for a visit.
As you can imagine I was all over this. So yesterday afternoon I swung by Dog Habitat to meet their new boarders!
These trio of siblings do not have names. Therefore, I have taken it upon myself to call them The Spanish Inquisition. Why, you ask? Well, for starters I have recently decided Cardinal Fang is damned good name for a cat. Secondly, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition (Dog Habitat didn’t in anyway). Lastly, I am guessing this winsome trio have a fondness for soft cushions and comfy chairs. Maybe yours?
From left to right we have Cardinal Fang, a female tortie; Cardinal Ximinez, a male tiger stripe (who, it should be noted, appears to be their leader); and Cardinal Biggles, an orange male tabby.
Biggles, though very friendly, found his supper more compelling than my camera. Here’s Jay telling us their story!
Last— but hardly least— I dare you to resist amazingly cute little fella. He too has no name, so I have taken to calling him Oddball.
Here’s his equally cute but very shy sister! We’ll call her Milk. Just like their neighbors, they too were rescued from Greenpoint. Follows is a little footage of Oddball in action. He’s just as friendly as he is cute. I swear he didn’t stop purring the whole time I was filming!
As Jay indicated, all these kittens will be getting a check up in the very near future. In the meantime anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org.

TOMORROW: The Don Project
This item comes from a chap named Vandal. He writes:
Hi, Heather.
I’m a friend of Jay Lombard and Rob Maher of Unleash/ Dog Habitat. They suggested to get in touch with you to possibly spread the word on our upcoming benefit concert for the film, “The Don Project”.
What is The Don Project, you ask? Well, you can follow their web site— or read their press release!
Emerging filmmakers Matthew Maguire, Dan Bowhers, and Vandal Truong team up for this powerful, intimate piece of cinema. the result is the short film, The Don Project- a little bit punk rock, and a little bit neo-realist. It is a “day in the life”, character study of Don, a dog walker and lingering skate punk scene-ster living in the current day of Brooklyn, New York.
The benefit fundraiser for the film is Saturday, July 17th at Coco 66 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The cover is a mere five dollars. The bands lending their support are Invisible Lines, The Amboys, Black Water, and Cecilia Celeste. Partnering with the non profit group Dog Habitat, all the film’s profits will be donated to help fund dog rescues and adoptions.
Recently wrapped principle photography, the film is now in post production and gearing up for film festivals throughout the country. The Don Project was shot in numerous Brooklyn neighborhoods including Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Bushwick and Bay Ridge.
So there have you. Check it out!

Adoptable Cuties: Meet Peggy Sue, Spider & Rocky
As I wind down for this upcoming (and purportedly HOT) weekend I thought it would be nice to feature some adoptable pups from Greenpoint’s very own Dog Habitat. To this end Rob Maher and a vollie were kind of enough to introduce me to three of their very cutest: Peggy Sue, Daisy and Rocky.
Here’s Spider (AKA: Daisy).
Here’s Peggy Sue.
And here’s Rob giving us the 411 on these two ladies.
Last up here’s my personal favorite: Rocky.
This volunteer, Laura, was kind enough to help coax a good photograph of this lively two year old Jack Russell Terrier. Rocky was recently surrendered by his owner because he could no longer afford to take care of him (this kind of thing is regrettably becoming more common given today’s economy). If exceptionally curious pups are your thing, this is your man. Follows is some footage of Rocky doing what he does best: frolic!
How much of a charmer is this guy, you ask? Enough so to make a Bull Terrier named Maggie jump for joy. Or something. In any case this is too funny not to post!
Anyone interested in giving any of these three cuties the loving home they so richly deserve should contact the folks at Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org.
Thanks!

Adoptable Cuties: Meet Stella & Chewy
When I saw the lovely photos Jay posted of these absolutely adorable Chihuahua/Yorkie mixes Dog Habitat recently rescued from a kill shelter I simply had to make their acquaintance. I am pleased to report that this not only came to pass earlier today— but Stella and Chewy are even more adorable in person! As you will see in the following video where Jay shares with us their story. Enjoy!
Chewy and Stella may be pint-sized pups— but they have a big dog appetite!
Anyone interested in giving either of these cuties the loving home they so richly deserve should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org.
Thanks!

One Of Those Days…

(Or, Meet Mimi)
I have often made mention on this web site that when I am left alone at the junk shop interesting things happen. Well, today was no exception. My boss and co-worker left me in charge so they could get a snack.
That’s when I made the acquaintance of Mimi, the cat you see above. Her two soon-to-be former owners wheeled her into the junk shop on a dolly in a cat box and asked me if I needed a cat.
I have had a number of people enter the junk shop trying to sell me one thing or another over the years— electronics usually— and I refuse to purchase them. This is store policy because more often than not these items are, how should we say— hot? The same could be said for Mimi: after being carted down Manhattan Avenue door to door in a cat box sans air conditioning this pussy was rather warm. When I asked why they were getting rid of her I was told her owner was pregnant and couldn’t be around cat boxes. Uh-huh.
Stupefied, appalled and suspecting there is probably not a black market for tabbies I made some phone calls. I am pleased to announce that the guys at Dog Habitat have stepped up to the plate! Mimi now resides in air-conditioned comfort in one of their delightfully appointed kitty condos. It goes without saying that this is a temporary situation. Mimi is a very friendly (and furry) eight month old Maine Coon mix who would make a great companion for that purrfect person. Maybe you? If you would like to make the acquaintance of Miss Mimi and give her the loving home she so richly deserves please contact the folks at Dog Habitat via email or telephone at:
- rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org
- (347) 689 – 4000
You can also make a donation to Dog Habitat to help pay for Mimi’s medical expenses/upkeep by clicking here. In closing I want to thank Jay Lombard (again) for taking this lovely lass in on a dime. It is greatly appreciated.
Miss Heather
P.S.: Other niceties from my day (and it ain’t over yet) include (but are not limited to):
- Being given a one cent “tip” from a particularly annoying customer (who tried to talk me down to 49 cents on a 50 cent postcard) and
- a 50-60 something chap informing me that the blue umbrella he was carrying on his shoulder was a M-14 which he picked up in Vietnam. I apologize that I have no photograph of this gent to share with you, dear readers. Not being an expert in fire arms I couldn’t tell if it was loaded.
From The New York Shitty Inbox: Found On Dupont Street
Jay Lombard (who sent me the above photo) of Dog Habitat writes:
Heather- please post this photo. This dog was found as a stray (with choke collar) near manhattan ave and dupont a few days ago and we’ve been trying to find the owner. We heard that there was a man driving around the area looking for a lost dog, but we have no other leads or contact info. We’re hoping one of your readers will recognize this pretty, brindle female pit mix.
If you know who this handsome pup belongs to please contact the folks at Dog Habitat at 347-601-8678 asap. Thanks!

Name These Kittens: The Bed-Stuy Quartet
Filed under: 11216, 11222, Bed-Stuy, Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Queens
Yesterday I had the blues so I went for a walk. I’m glad I did. It was on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg that I learned things could always be worse. For example, I could be this guy— or worse yet, his ex-girlfriend. So it goes. Today I met some little ones who had an even rougher life… and they’re only six weeks old!
When Jay of Dog Habitat told me last weekend that they just got in a litter of kittens rescued from Bed-Stuy naturally I had to make their acquaintance.
Here they are!
These two are definitely the more outgoing of the bunch. The “crouching tiger” is the solitary boy of the litter. I nicknamed him “Biggie Smalls” because he is the biggest of the “smalls”. His more defiant companion (who Jay has nicknamed “Smudgy”) appears to be the leader of this crew, as you will see.
These two are much more shy. Especially the one on the left. The one on the right is the runt of the litter. Given she is little…
VERY LITTLE and hails from Bed-Stuy I nicknamed her L’il Kim. Not that these kittens have names per se: they don’t. But more about that later. Here’s Jay telling us how these Bed-Stuy beauties came to be (albeit temporarily) Greenpointers.
Then Jay left me alone to get acquainted with them. We started with an ice breaker I like to call “watch the hand”.
Then we upgraded to a cat toy.
Then we had a little lunch.
But back to the purpose of this post: these kittens do not have names! For this reason Jay and I decided a contest is in order. Do you have names for this winsome quartet of cuties? If so, please tender them via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Otherwise, you can see more pix and videos of these cuties by clicking here.
In closing, here a little something for the dog lovers out there. The above lovely lass, Abby, was recently found wandering around Jackie Robinson Parkway in Queens. Luckily a good Samaritan picked her up. And by the previous I mean lucky for her and us: she’s a sweet gentle thing!
As I have (often) written before: anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. Tell ’em I sent you.
Thanks!
