New York Shitty Day Ender: Presenting The Brooklyn Diggers & A Very Nifty T-Shirt!
Emily Gallagher (a lady behind this collaborative endeavor) writes:
Hi Heather! …Basically I started a group with Ryan from NAG, our artist friend Gillian, Jason Gaspar (an artist and food justice guy who worked at the Wyckoff Farmhouse with me) and Mary B. from Kill Devil Hill. Our mission is to bring Brooklyn’s working class history– and thus, social justice history and issues– to the attention of residents who live in the neighborhoods presently. We call ourselves the Brooklyn Diggers, in reference to the Diggers in England in the 1600s (and of course also that we are digging up history.) This is our first project, so hopefully it goes well! We won 2nd place at FEAST this past summer so we are filling in the extra money that we need to pull it off. I am planning on reaching out to the Monitor Museum and inviting them to table…
Even though we are using the USS Monitor as our springboard, the event will really be more about imagining life in Greenpoint in the 1860s. We’re also hoping to make it hands-on, engaging and fun for all ages. I’m working with some historians I know from the Tenement Museum and costumed interpreters from another program I worked for, called Live-In Theater. I think it’s pretty wild that the age of the workers in many of the shipbuilding facilities in the neighborhood were essentially the same age as many of the newcomers in the neighborhood today. And life was rough! To think who might have lived in the tenements and houses we sit in presently…! You can check out our rarely updated blog at www.brooklyndiggers.wordpress.com (read the about section for our manifesto) and our proposal is up there. Let me know of any questions you have!
If you want to help make this really neat project happen (and get a really cool souvenir commemorating a great piece of American history), head over to Kill Devil Hill and pick up one these t-shirts!

Now At Kill Devil Hill: Wish Fulfillment
As some of you recall earlier this month I announced that the Garden Spot’s very own Kill Devil Hill has created their own Greenpoint t-shirt (as seen at left). While lovely I took my time acquiring one. They are nice to be certain— but therein lies the rub: unlike their Bad Brains and Shit Tit inspired predecessor by my buddy Subtexture they are, well, a little too nice. Then I received an email from a lady named Donna who forced me to reconsider this assessment. She writes:
Thought you might get a kick out of this. My two eldest sisters grew up in Greenpoint during the hippie heyday. One joke the locals had was that “Greenpoint girls go down like anchors”!… I of course bought this shirt for my sister and told the woman in the shop the “legend”…she loved it!….. Maybe those shirts being worn by all the new people will take on another significance but, everytime I see them I think of what my sisters told me! lol!
Needless to say this changed everything. I scurried out the door to secure one but alas when I arrived they had sold out! However, I did make a recommendation to the kindly woman behind the counter (Mary, who assured me more shirts were on the way): with summer coming up could they produce a tank top? Today, gentle readers, I got the good word: they’re in!
Hi Heather,
As per your request, we made some Greenpoint anchor tank tops. They are in the shop and come in the same color, navy with white writing. Have a great weekend.Mary
Mission accomplished!

Now For Sale at Kill Devil Hill: Greenpoint Tee Shirts & More
When I spied these wares at Go Green Greenpoint yesterday afternoon I simply had to share the good news here. Not only is the asking price of $20 for these tees easy on the wallet, but the nautical theme is rather charming. I brought up the matter creating a tank top or some other more “fitted” item for the ladies with the woman manning this table. She told me they were working on such an item. I can hardly wait!

TOMORROW: Black Friday Sale At Dalaga & More!
I don’t know about you but the last thing I want to do on “Black Friday” is go to Manhattan. I would not go so far as to I am anti-social. I’m not. I like people. I just don’t like being around so damned many of them feverishly fighting over discounted goods. I get enough of that on the job. What’s more, there is no need to go to Manhattan when there are so many great places to buy gifts right here in Greenpoint. CASE IN POINT:
I have the pleasure of calling co-proprietors of this business neighbors. They’re not only great folks but their offerings are quite lovely and reasonably priced. Check it out!
BLACK FRIDAY SALE
November 27, 2009; 12:00 – 9:00 p.m.
Dalaga
150 Franklin Street
Brooklyn, New York 11222
While you’re on Franklin be sure to pay a visit to the many wonderful businesses located there. To name a few: Tommy and Roy, my favorite Alter boys; Word Books, Pentatonic Music, Permanent Records and Kill Devil Hill. Be sure not to overlook Manhattan Avenue while you’re at it. Franklin Street does not great Greenpoint holiday shopping in its entirety make.
Do your part to help the Garden Spot’s indie/mom and pop businesses thrive: buy local this holiday season!

Congratulations Kill Devil Hill!
Yesterday (as I was enjoying what little sunshine were are likely to see until Thursday) I spied a gentleman photographing the front of Kill Devil Hill. After musing about how original I find this establishment’s window displays I asked him if he was shutterbugging this shop for business or pleasure. He told me it was indeed a paid gig and that our very own procurer of stuffed musk rats is going to be in Lucky Magazine. Way to go, guys!
