Greenpoint Restaurant Watch: Open & Soon To Be!

First up (and as many of you have probably deduced), I was wrong about the opening date for Grill & Greens. Fortunately when I walked by today I saw something very promising: a big bowl of eggplant just waiting to be rendered into delicious babaganoush. I asked the men present when they planned to open: they’re hoping for tomorrow. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime you can peruse their menu by clicking here.

Target Opening Date: May 13, 2010
994 Manhattan Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Lastly, I have had a number of people ask me about the status of Vamos Al Tequila. I am pleased to announce are open (have been since Sunday, May 9— hey, I at least I got one right!) and I tried their foodstuffs last night. Before I proceed I would like to male two things clear upfront:

  1. I am very fussy about Mexican food.
  2. Given my recent experience (READ: vomiting my brains out) at the hands of San Loco I probably should not have ordered enchiladas. In fact, I probably should have waited a few more days before trying this establishment: my palette and stomach are still a bit, um, touchy.

I ordered cheese enchiladas rojas. While I very much liked the accompanying rice and refried beans, the enchiladas themselves didn’t so much for me: the cheese stuffing was not melted (to my taste) and the sauce struck me as being a bit salty. Methinks next time I am going to order verde sauce instead.

I do not want to come off as panning Vamos Al Tequila (I’m not— if I was I wouldn’t make it known I plan to go back!). The service was very friendly, a number of the items on the menu (which you can see by clicking here) looked intriguing (the Abril Avocado Torta and Aqua de Jamaica* among them) and lest we forget: they have only been open a few days. In other words: I’m going to wait a week or two and give ’em another try.

CAVEAT: as of yesterday Vamos Al Tequila’s credit card machine had yet to arrive and they were still awaiting their liquor license.

*If you have not tried this, do so. It’s wonderful— especially on a hot summer day. That is, if summer ever comes. If today is any indication of what’s to come I have my doubts.

THIS WEEKEND: Le Petit Boudoir Grand Opening

Just over a month ago I was contacted by a very nice gentleman regarding a store he and his wife are opening on Franklin Street. His name is Mike and you might be interested to know he is the chap behind Mercat Negre on Grand Street. Naturally I had to get the 411 so I swung by. Things were a little rough— but it looked promising. As I left that day I asked Mike to give me a heads-up when they were closer to opening. This too has come to pass. In fact, I just got back from previewing what will be Le Petit Boudoir. I am pleased to report it is looking good!

Here’s what you can expect opening day (which is this upcoming Saturday!):

  • Vintage clothing
  • Sunglasses galore
  • Handmade soaps and candles (I have been told they will be using produce from Greenpoint’s very own Rooftop Farms in some of these goodies!)
  • jewelry and much, much more!

Check it out!

Brooklyn, New York 11222

Closing on a Franklin Street related note, today I spoke with one of the owners of the restaurant slated to occupy 162 Franklin Street: Vamos Al Tequila. Not only was she nice enough to let me see their space…

but she assured me that enchiladas will be on their menu (which they hope to have finalized next week) and they plan to open in “10 days”. I can hardly wait!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: A Bar At 200 Franklin?

Hello Miss Heather,

I have a question I was hoping you might be able to help provide some insight on, seeing as you are generally my go to source for Greenpoint related news. I live on the corner of Franklin and Huron and for the past 2 years have learned to ignore the monstrosity being built down the block from me. However, I might have accidentally warmed up to it a little bit, if only because the construction workers were extremely polite and cordial-to the point where I actually looked forward to seeing them in the morning and evening as I went on my commute.  Anyway, I’ve started to notice some activity in the ground floor store fronts and am curious as to what is going in. I didn’t see any signs posted that might provide answers, but in the store front right on the corner of Franklin and India I saw the potential for a coffee shop/restaurant. Mainly some chairs, maybe a fridge, a chalkboard menu with was I think was “English Breakfast” and reasonable prices.  Is there any chance the Greenpoint Coffee House might have found a new home? Or am I just projecting my owns dreams and desires into this store front?

Here’s what I know:

  1. The last day the Greenpoint Coffee House was open there was a liquor license petition for a tavern serving “light fare” to be located this address.
  2. I have heard rumors— and that’s just what they are, rumors— that some folks from the Greenpoint Coffee House are behind this endeavor.

In any case, it certainly appears a bar will be taking this space. The buzz I have heard affirms this.

On a related note, you might be interested to know the Garden Spot Cafe (which will be taking over the Greenpoint Coffee House’s old space and is purported to open this spring) has applied for and been awarded a liquor license. In closing, I’s like to pass along this liquor license application I found while poking around Community Board 1’s web site:

Lest you are wondering where 1110 Manhattan Avenue is located, it is directly across the street from the place formerly known as the Greenpoint Hotel.

P.S.: Here’s one last piece of tantalizing neighborhood gossip.

It is rumored the people behind 7A are behind the restaurant slated to grace Casa Mon Amour’s old space at 162 Franklin Street.

Greenpoint Food Watch: Mexican Comes To Franklin!

The one thing I constantly crave but have the damnedest time finding is a honest-to-god, no frills “home style” cheese enchilada. You know the type: red sauce, cheese, lots of onions and little else? Well, I usually schlep to Manhattan for this fare but that may very well become a thing of the past.

casa

Some of you might have noticed activity at Casa Mon Amour’s old space at 162 Franklin Street. Well, I was commenting about it to the Mister on my cell phone when a gentleman overheard me and said something that was music to my ears:

It’s going to be a Mexican restaurant.

Needless to say when I got home I headed over to Community Board 1’s web site without delay to verify this. He’s correct:

vamos

Cookie Road: Open At Last!

After receiving numerous inquiries and beginning to wonder if this place would ever “happen” I am pleased to announce that, at long last, Cookie Road has opened for business! When did this most auspicious event come to pass, you ask? TODAY, that’s when!

I asked the co-proprietors what took them so long. Apparently they “checked off the wrong box” on one item in their paperwork. (You gotta love bureaucracy). Follows are a few delectable items you can expect to find if— or better yet, WHEN— you drop by.

icedtea

An exotic assortment of iced tea, both sweetened and unsweetened. I tried the coconut “flavor”. It was pretty tasty and definitely quenched my thirst after walking for five hours.*

cookies

Canine-shaped cookies.

bling

Pigs and a little bling.

tarts

An assortment of quiches and cakes. Well, there used to be an assortment. As you can see as of 6:00 p.m. today it has been pretty picked over. And of course, my personal passion:

keylime tarts

Key lime goodness!

And of special interest to java enthusiasts: Cookie Road serves all manner and variety of caffeinated drinks— including, but not limited to cafe latte, espresso, cappuccino. Why not swing by this weekend and congratulate these very nice folks for making their long-awaited debut?

casamonamour

To close on a Franklin Street related note today I saw signs of activity at 162 Franklin Street, better known Casa Mon Amour. I talked to guys up and got the scoop. They are interested in opening a “small plate”, “American restaurant/grill”, but had some concerns about the conditions of the space.

It is a mess.

one of them said. I told them it was an excellent location to set up shop but to please, PLEASE keep the entrees reasonable, e.g.; UNDER $15.00**. They assured me they would. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

*From Greenpoint to Flushing Avenue and back. Man, I’m beat.

**And under NO CIRCUMSTANCES open a Thai Restaurant. We have enough already.
