MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Benefit For Conrad Mea & Family

It has been brought to my attention that the kindly founder of Grandma Rose’s, John Ricco, and the folks at the R Bar will be co-conducting a benefit for a family who lost their home as a result of the recent fire at 147 Conselyea Street. Here are the deets per the event’s Facebook page:

If you haven’t heard, Conrad saved 13 people from a fire Saturday June 2nd. He & his family lost everything! We, with Grandma Roses, invite you all to help a heroic neighbor & his family. The party will start with a BBQ @ Grandma Roses & continue @ R-Bar. Bring your wallets & show your support for a great local cause!

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: How You Can Help!

Filed under: 11211, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn

As I mentioned yesterday, among the people rendered homeless as a result of Friday night’s fire at 147 Conselyea Street (as seen at left) is a family who not only lost everything save the shirts on their backs but their son’s birthday is today. That’s rough! Thus, a number of our local businesses are accepting donations to help these, our neighbors in need— and perhaps bring a much-needed smile to this child’s face. Follows are three:

Breaking Boundaries
180 North 10 Street
Brooklyn, New York 11211

They write:

…they are dear friends and family to us. You can drop items money at breakin’ boundaries starting Monday 2pm…

They go on to outline what this family needs:

  • Clothing- woman 35 show size 6 she’s 5″2 and thin
  • Man-6 ft
  • Boy – he turns 12 today (June 3rd — Ed. Note) we’re throwing him a surprise birthday party
  • He’s a shoe size 7
  • Clothing 12-14
  • And sports he plays everything

You can also leave donations at Mousey Brown Salon who writes:

I will have a collection box at Mousey Brown Salon for the families that were burned out of their building on Conselyea night before last. As I find out more about what they need in particular, I will post it. My assumption is that they will need everything. I will take whatever we collect to Tony’s Pizza to give to the families.

Mousey Brown Salon
732 Lorimer Street
Brooklyn, New York 11211

And as the above indicates, Tony’s Pizza is accepting donations as well:

Tony’s Pizza
355 Graham Avenue
Brooklyn, New York 11211

Please find it in your collective hearts, north Brooklynites, to lend this family a hand in their time of need. Thanks!

UPDATE, 6:14 p.m.: On a related note, do take a moment to read this New York Daily news article about an absolutely amazing fellow who helped his neighbors flee 147 Conselyea Street!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Fire At 147 Conselyea Street

It has come to my attention that number of people are curious as to serious police/FDNY activity last night (at approximately 9:00 p.m.). The following (which comes from the NYPD via an anonymous tipster), sadly is probably the reason:

On Friday June 1st, 2012 at approximately 2116 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a residential fire inside of 147 Conselya Street apartment 3r, within the confines of the 94th Precinct. Upon extinguishment of the fire by FDNY, police observed the victim (F/W/59) unconscious and unresponsive. EMS responded and pronounced the victim DOA on the scene. The investigation is ongoing. The Medical examiner to determine cause of death and the NYC Fire Marshal to determine the cause of fire.

The identification of the victim is pending family notification.

I walked by this building late this afternoon: it has been (as you can see in the above photo provided by rosquet) totally eviscerated. I suspect I speak for many when I write my heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of the woman who perished in this fire and her neighbors who are now without a home.

UPDATE, June 3, a.m.: I have been made aware there is some kind of fundraising/donation effort being organized for one of the families* rendered homeless by this conflagration. If/when I get the 411, I will post it here. Here you go!
