Mark Your Calendars: All Creatures Great & Small

Annual Blessing of the Animals nys

Just today I recalled we were reaching the time of year when the Church of the Ascension (in honor of St. Francis) hosts its annual blessing and remembrance service for critters of all kinds. Then, serendipitously enough, I spy Reverend Merz himself on Manhattan Avenue posting fliers. This is a wonderful event and a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors and fellow furkids— past and present. Check it out!

The ever awesome Reverend Merz writes:

Hi Heather,

I hope you are doing well. I wanted to know if you can throw this up on the blog. We are moving our hunger program to Saturdays and we are looking for volunteers. Here it is:

Ascension Hunger Program Saturdays

Greenpointers know about the needs of our community. Everyday we run into familiar faces in our neighborhood who don’t have enough to eat. Join our growing team of volunteers working to provide a meal, a warm space and hospitality to these familiar faces.

The Ascension Hunger Program, hosted by Ascension Church, is serving every Saturday from 9 am to 1:15 pm. Join us for a few hours by signing up here or learn more about our program here.

Duly posted— spread the word!

animal blessing

Reverend Merz writes:

Hi Heather,Was wondering if you can post this event this week. We are having our Animal Blessing and Remembrance of those that have died this next weekend, Sunday October 13th at 3pm.

It is short, like 20 minutes and all the animals are in the Church. My “favorite part” is that we remember those that have died which to my mind is hugely important. There are few public places where we can come together and acknowledge the tremendous impact, love shared and grief when we experience when we  lose our animal friends.

Thanks a million (bring one or all of your Kitty’s down)

Yours, John

Gladly passed along! I have swung by this event in years past— it is wonderful! As for bringing all of Chez Shitty’s cats to be blessed: Mr. Merz better be careful of what he wishes for. Check it out!

A very nice lady named Julia writes:

Dear Heather,

John Merz gave me your email address, I am the music director at Church of the Ascension and organizer of East Bank Music, a concert series at the church. We have our first show coming up on Friday, here is the press release. If you were able to post on newyorkshitty it would be wonderful!

East Bank Music Presents Aaron Blount (of Knife in the Water) with Dimestore Dance Trio
Friday Sept 6th, 8:00 pm
Suggested donation: $10.00
The Church of the Ascension
127 Kent St (btw Franklin Street and Manhattan Avenue)
Brooklyn, New York 11222

Aaron Blount is a songwriter and founder of the widely regarded Austin band Knife in the Water. Raised and home schooled in rural central Texas in the 1980s, his songs bear the residual influence of Country and Gospel with a surreal literary bent. Finding the balance between crime-novel storytelling and epiphany under the influence, his music is kindred to Denis Johnson, the Dirty Three, Sam Peckinpah, and Narcocorrido. Knife in the Water have released 3 Lps to much acclaim and he has released one solo Ep. He is currently at work on a new album.

Dimestore Dance Trio is an ongoing conversation of composition and improvisation between guitarist Jack Martin and bassist Jude Webre, now with Eric Read on the drum kit. Their spirited blend of 1940s small-combo stratagems, post-bop stumbling struts, and ethereal flights pays homage to various forebears (Erik Satie, Django, Charlie Christian, Albert Ayler, the Lounge Lizards) by taking apart their harmolodic machines to make ready for re-assembly on any occasion.

Done!

…We are initiating a concert series at Ascension. We’re trying to bring in good musicians but keep it inexpensive for all. Come on down for an hour of great music Sunday at 3pm!

Not only does this sound like a wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but I for one am very eager to see this series get some traction. Check it out!

This item was brought to my attention via an email blast from the wonderful Pastor-In-Charge of the Church of the Ascension, John Merz. He writes:

Dear folks

I am writing to have you help advertise our community Annual Blessing and Remembrance of the Animals to be held at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension Saturday October 13th at 3pm. If you were able to post on your blogs, online publications and facebook pages that would be wonderful. Here is the text for the ad and a jpeg of the poster is attached. And I might add if there are ever community events etc or things you would like to do at the church do not hesitate to contact me. Any questions about this please contact me (via email) at: ascensionbrooklyn (at) gmail (dot) com

Blessing of the Animals and Remembrance

Saturday October 13th 3pm @ the Episcopal Church of the Ascension

All creatures great and small and their caregivers are invited to join us in the Church as we bless our beloved animals and also remember those that have past. The simple service will last about 15 minutes. People are encouraged to stay around out in front of the Church or in the Garden to strengthen the bonds of our animal loving community. We ask that all dogs be on leash and cats in cat carriers or other suitable transport whatever your animal may be…

You can read an interview with Mr. Merz about this yearly event by clicking here. Check it out!

LAST GASP: 94th Precinct Community Council Meeting & Community Board 1’s Parks Subcommittee Meeting

Both are set to happen the evening of October 11th! Am I the only person who would like to see greater coordination/communication between our Community Board, the Police Department and other community “groups”  so as to prevent overlaps like this? Why should we Greenpointers be forced to, for example, pick and choose between learning more about the tragic (and I suspect preventable) suicide which came to pass at McGolrick Park and what’s on Community Board 1 Parks Subcommittee’s agenda (which happens to be pretty Garden Spot-centric):

1. Presentation on Improvements/Renovation for Cooper Park – by Mr Martin Maher, Chief of Staff/Brooklyn – Parks Department, and Ms. Portia Cook-Dyrenforth, Capital Projects, Brooklyn – Parks Department
2. Proposed Green Thumb Interim Use For 59 Java Street – by Mr. Jack Hammer, NYC HPD.
3. Pathways of McCarren Park – Project status discussion.

In any case, make/take your choice, Greenburgers:
