Pepe was outside a corner bodega when I complemented him on his appearance. Eighty- five, a retired truck driver, he raised eight children in Bushwick. “The worst thing about being old is having to bury a child. I have done that three times. One was shot working the bodega, another passed from illness, and the third in the World Trade Center.”

These two cousins where sitting down for a dinner of ham sandwiches outside the bodega when I asked to take their picture. Jonathan (on the right) was cooperative, but Juan on the left kept covering his face and giggling at my exasperation. Eventually hunger and my patience wore him down.
