Helicopters…

We have been hearing a lot of them lately. Those of you who heard them last night, here’s why. The Community Affairs office of the 94th Precinct writes:

Early this morning 8/13/2013 around 0130 hrs one male Hispanic 24 years old was apprehended inside the stairway of 162 Nassau Avenue. The male is believed to be the sole perpetrator in 3 separate home invasions and sexual assaults between the hours of 8pm and 1030pm on 8/12/2013. The assaults occurred on Berry Street, Engert Avenue and Nassau Avenue.

The investigation is ongoing by the 94pct Detective Squad and the Brooklyn North Special Victims Squad. Charges are pending.

The good news is this may very well have been the fellow responsible for no less than three home invasions and sexual assaults and he has been apprehended. The bad news is three home invasions and sexual assaults came to pass. ABC has more details, which can be had here.

Please, please be vigilant folks. Make sure the front doors of your building and apartments are secure— and if you see something suspicious say something to 911 STAT.

The Word On The Street: Walt Whitman

As anyone who lives/works near the Salvation Army Family Store on Manhattan Avenue can/will attest: Sundays are a pretty popular day for folks to leave “donations”. Given this establishment is closed on Sunday (as Christian institutions are known to do) the end result is essentially a free-for-all of free goods. Today it would seem Mr. Whitman did not make the “cut”…

A very nice lady named Joanna writes:

I translated the Nowy Dzennik bit you quoted in this piece http://www.newyorkshitty.com/greenpoint-goodness/94997

“In turn, from the management of the locale we found out that, indeed Polonaise Terrace will be closing and will only be functioning until the 30th of September, although he says the location has not been sold. “We will 100% be closing the restaurant at the end of September, however information regarding the sale is gossip” — said one of the managers of the firm, who also did not want to be named.”

Hope that helps a bit. Although I’ve never been to Polonaise Terrace, I’m sad to see another Polish establishment closing down.

Thanks for doing what you do!

No, thank you for the kind words and translation!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Anti-Violence Training At The Greenpoint Reformed Church

This comes courtesy of CB Stewart at the Greenpoint Reformed Church. She writes:

In light of this summer’s violence in the neighborhood, the Greenpoint Reformed Church has invited the Anti Violence Project (AVP) to hold a training on street safety and hate violence. If you identify as a woman or an LGBTQ person, please join us at Greenpoint Reformed Church (136 Milton St) at 7PM on Tuesday August 13th.

AVP’s “trainings and workshops provide participants with information on the impact of hate motivated violence, safety planning strategies, tips on preventing or reducing the impact of violence, information on how to create LGBTQH [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV+] inclusive organizations, and how to support the needs of LGBTQ survivors of violence.” [www.avp.org]

That’s right folks. Nowy Dziennik writes (thanks to a translation given by a readers named Joanna!):

In turn, from the management of the locale we found out that, indeed Polonaise Terrace will be closing and will only be functioning until the 30th of September, although he says the location has not been sold. “We will 100% be closing the restaurant at the end of September, however information regarding the sale is gossip” — said one of the managers of the firm, who also did not want to be named.

The word on the street is this building will be razed so as to building residential property. Given this building is located in a landmark district yours truly finds this interesting. Nonetheless, Nowy Dziennik concludes their tome as follows:

…In turn, according to the zoning map and the information on the Department of Buildings updated and approved by the City Council of New York on July 24 this year, shows that the region at Greenpoint Ave. is currently known. R6A zone. Changing the zoning classification allows for the construction of a 15 foot high apartment than it was before.
