Greenpoint Video Du Jour: Thursday Afternoon At The Junk Shop
Filed under: Greenpoint Magic
(Or: George Diaz Sounds Off About “The Secret”)
The one thing I have noticed proliferating at an alarming rate in the junk shop of late is self-help paraphernalia. Perhaps this is a sign of the times or a sad testament to the American collective consciousness? Or both? All I know is if this mind-boggling array of print material, audio cassettes and compact discs do what they profess the solution to most of life’s problems— be it penile enlargement enhancement, accumulating wealth, letting go of dysfunctional relationships, finding true love, and yes, unlearning narcissistic behavior— can be found at The Thing. Or more accurately: its dumpster.
I mention the previous because last week I happened upon this screencap of a review for “The Secret” via one of my Flickr contacts, Gubatron. I liked it so much I had to share it with my buddy Larry da Junkman. He too was impressed by its Mark Twain-meets-Ambrose Bierce variety of wit.
Now jump forward to today.
The weather was downright brutal and as a consequence things were pretty slow at the junk shop. We secured our respective lunches and a round table slowly coalesced. This forum of Greenpointerati included yours truly, Larry (da Junkman), and George Diaz. First we discussed neighborhood affairs (and in so doing tackled the problem of what to do with the glut of vacant condominiums here: rent them under the pretext of doing a one day film shoot and refuse to leave and/or employ them as high-end brothels).
Eventually, as is often the case, our conversation came around to the subject of prison. That’s when Larry and I decided to share the good news about “The Secret” with George. Hilarity ensued.
To close on a (somewhat) related note I was recently approached by George to do a show on his Internet radio station Llegamos. Initially I thought he was out of his friggin’ mind but after having given the matter some thought I am coming around to the idea. Provided of course I can get a word in edge-wise with this wise guy. We’ll see what happens.
Lastly, I would remiss if I didn’t share this curious Greenpoint factoid: “The Secret” is a very popular rental at our local video store!

Anyone Seen Dakota?
The details on this flier are scant but its timing and location is very interesting. Will this family receive a voice mail demanding reward money for their beloved pet’s return? I certainly hope not— but in light of recent events I am not terribly optimistic.

These are but a mere sampling of the many wonderful images from last weekend’s storm taken by a fellow Greenpointer (nice guy and all-around very talented photographer) who calls himself Mugsniffer. Do take the time and check them out. This one is my hands-down favorite. Great shots!

The Boneshakers Makeout Party Experience
On November 18, 2008 I wrote:
…I cannot wait to try these folks out for lunch. I mean, how can you NOT try a sandwich called “Makeout Party†(spicy tofu, garlic, hummus, sauerkraut, tomato, red onions on a hoagie)?
Well, today dear readers, was that day. I awoke with a strange hankering for foodstuffs that would render my kisser completely unfit for human habitation. What’s more, I am married. I have no need to impress anyone anymore. If it gives me gas so much the better. It’ll give me yet another thing with which to torment the Mister (can you say “dutch oven”?). Our marriage is— for better or worse— one long Beavis and Butthead marathon. But I digress.
I bundled up, tossed on my sneakers and headed over to Boneshakers. I first ordered a couple of their chocolate mint cupcakes. Then I got right down to business:
I’d like one Makeout Party sandwich please.
It took them a little while to whip it up but it was totally worth the wait.
Behold, eight full inches of social suicide for a mere $7.00! That’s less than a buck per inch. Try one of these bad boys for yourself; not only is it a tasty concoction (especially on a cold day like today), but you get the added value of having garlic/sauerkraut breath for at least a full two hours after consumption.

Culinary tip: be sure to wash your Makeout Party sandwich down with a can of Budweiser. Trust me on this one.

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Manchines

Desi Desi (who was kind enough to pass along the above photograph) writes:
attached is a pic i snapped of a banner over a soon to be laundromat. over 80 new manchines! pretty funny! it’s over at the corner of kingsland and nassau (244 Nassau Avenue to be precise —Ed. Note). all joking aside i’m excited for a new laundromat in our neck of the woods, all the ones close by are super shitty. also, do you have any word on when wardak is supposed to open? i either trek to key food, or i deal with met food since it’s close but man, it is so bad.
Wardak looked pretty close to completion back in November but with this economy who knows? If anyone out there knows if/when this grocery store is set to open by all means please share.
And oh yeah, the Met Food on Nassau Avenue is disgusting. However, it makes a rather nice appearance in the movie Street Trash. Watch this trailer and see for yourself!

UPDATE, 4:15 p.m.: I swung by Wardak on my way to Boneshakers (to purchase some cupcake and sauerkraut love). They were busy at work!
I’ll expound upon on my Boneshakers experience in a bit. Stay tuned!
