People In My Neighborhood: Juan

I’ve seen Greenpoint t-shirts and I’ve seen Long Island City t-shirts; but this is the first time I have ever seen a Newtown Creek t-shirt. Impressed, I asked this gentleman what gives. His name is Juan and as it would happen he works at the Newtown Creek Nature Walk. Among his responsibilities are opening and closing the park. In our brief conversation it became very apparent that he loves his job (and the park for that matter). This post is for you, Juan. Happy Labor Day weekend!

Greenpoint Video Du Jour: Movin’ Day
I was a little slow on the draw when I caught this curious happening last night on Franklin Street. Then again, it’s not everyday (or in this case, night) that you see a human dolly rolling down the street. I gotta hand it to these guys: this is an ingenious solution to a common problem. Screw with “man with a van”— these chaps should hire themselves out!

This has to be one of the most exquisite displays of aluminum siding our community has to offer. I am not kidding. Every time I walk by I cannot help but give pause and take it all in. The sea foam green number on the far right is particularly fetching.

Although the prospect of parsing through used (?) bathing suits skeeves me out to no end books and CDs are always on my shopping list. Especially if they’re cheap!

New York Shitty Day Starter: Friday Night In Greenpoint
When I first saw beheld this motor vehicle earlier this week I was unprepared. Last night I had my camera ready.
I think this is a tricked-out motorcycle (Dragcycle?!?). Whatever it is, it’s pretty damned amazing!

11222 Theft Alert!
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Although I prefer to refrain from blogging at the junk shop (the above image of the company computer’s keyboard should explain why) this just came to my attention and I wanted to pass it along ASAP. Apparently a gentleman’s car (which was parked West and Huron Street) was broken into (the lock was picked) this morning. Among the items stolen were (men’s) hockey gear: skates and a pair of mitts. These were contained in a blue plastic bag.
If anyone, dear readers, attempts to sell you anything fitting this description (presumably on the street or at one of our local parks) please bear in mind they may very well stolen property.
Thanks!

New York Shitty Day Starter: Greenpointer Spotted Using Newtown Creek Park
Yesterday our two week tour de force of New York City’s sights (and smells) took Mr. Heather and I to the Nature Walk. This may not be everyone’s idea of how to spend a lovely September afternoon but I suspect I have proven by now that we are not “everyone”: we are Greenpointers. As we made the final stretch to the Garden Spot’s gold green coast we were surprised to see we were not alone: we had stumbled upon a gentleman in the process of his daily workout.
After doing a few sets of curls (he came prepared with free weights) he proceeded to do a few sets push-ups. This is not an uncommon sight at McCarren Park, in fact it is pretty common. But this is not McCarren Park: this is a park located on the premises of the east coast’s largest waste treatment facility.
Maybe this chap wanted a little privacy? Regardless, he was an incredibly nice guy!
