Greenpoint Halloween Watch Part II: Eye On 97 Russell Street
Okay. So I have given everyone the good news that 648 Humboldt Street has started construction on this year’s fright fest. Well, I have even more Halloween happiness to impart: their friendly rivals at 97 Russell Street are up to some ghoulish goodness of their own!
Some of you might recall the lady behind this wonderful display got off to a late start last year. This was because she took a trip to Egypt!
She has gotten off to a much earlier start this year…
and it’s looking good!!!
If or when the opportunity arises do swing by and see this wonderful display unfold for yourself. If you happen to catch her working be sure to say “hi” and thank her for making Halloween a lot more fun for all of us. She’s a really sweet lady!

Greenpoint Halloween Watch: It Has Begun!
October has found its way to the Garden Spot. Since the weather was absolutely stunning I decided to table the blog and go for a walk. On a lark I decided to swing by my favorite house on Humboldt Street to see if they have commenced work on this year’s Halloween extravaganza. For those of you who are not in the know this is yours truly’s favorite holiday of the year.
They have! What’s more, I wasn’t the only person to notice that something very exciting is going on at 648 Humboldt Street.
Female passerby: Wow, this wasn’t here yesterday.
Me: Yup, and they’re just getting started.
F.P.: Yesterday I saw an inflatable ghost and I said to him (pointing to male companion) “Wow, a Halloween yard”! He said, “That isn’t a Halloween yard. I’ll show you a Halloween yard!”
Me: These people go all out. Wait until they bring out the guy who vomits up blood. He’s my favorite.
F.P.: Do they do this kind of thing for Christmas?
Me: Yeah, but…
F.P.: It is not as good?
Me: It’s good alright. They make it look like a ginger bread house and have a full-sized Santa and Mrs. Claus. It’s cute. But I don’t like cute. It like (pointing to ghouls on the second floor) this.

Some of you might have gathered from the preponderance of non-Greenpoint content of late that I have been lurking our fair city. This is because my inlaws are in town and they want to see the sights, sounds, and yes, SMELLS of the Big Apple during their brief stay.* Fortunately I have my good friend Rowan and Crappy to keep me in an “outer borough” state of mind.
It all started with a corn stalk (which can be seen at left). My inlaws happen to reside in Iowa. Corn is very common there. Corn is not, however, very common in Greenpoint (which is where this stalk was found). More specifically it was found on Bushwick Inlet between North 14 Street and North 15 Street: an ill-kept, trash ridden sidewalk which sits atop brownfield.
I found this fascinating. Enough so to write a post about it. A week later I walked by only to discover that someone had killed the corn— and the cobs were nowhere to be found.
Rowan (who provided the above photograph) wrote on September 28, 2009:
Saturday evening, around 6:30pm, I decided to check the corn plant. It’s broken in two. Photos to come, but I’m a bit sad that someone destroyed it. Also the Marlboro packet was still there.
To wit I replied:
I noticed that today. Even more frightening is the corn appears to have been taken. Presumably someone ate it. YIKES!
This morning I had the pleasure of moderating Rowan’s rebuttal:
Someone’s going to have very toxic corn poops.
Shortly thereafter I received an ominous email from Queens Crap. It read as follows:
Do you, in your vast annals of dog shit photos, happen to have one that’s laden with corn? If not, you will when I get home from work tonight.
I replied that I did not have such a find in my “vast annals”. Follows is Crappy’s reply:
You won’t be disappointed.
I wasn’t.
This delightful artifact was found at the intersection of DeKalb and Cypress Avenue in Ridgewood. It is proof positive that my buddy across the creek knows blue chip crap when he finds it.

*And they most, assuredly have. They walked by the Newtown Creek Waste Treatment Plant on Thursday afternoon and partook of a particularly fragrant subway ride today.
