LAST GASP: Greenpointer Shows 11222 Gratitude For New Park
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Newtown Creek
(Or, Fat Boy: R.I.P.) Last month at Manhattan Avenue Park we beheld a strapping chap sunning his buns in a pink Speedo. This month it would appear that Greenpoint’s newest park has been pressed into service as a pet cemetery.
Love you fat boy
RIP
Laura writes (in an email copied to North Brooklyn’s Park Poobah):
Well, tonight Mike & I visited the Manhattan Ave street end park. Mike saw some cardboard sticking out of the dirt. Being a good park steward, Mike began to pick it up when he noticed R.I.P. written on top. Turns out to be a final resting place. We weren’t about to throw the dearly departed away. Nor did we choose to bury it. We’ll leave it to the Parks Dept discretion to find a proper burial plot for “Fat Boy”.
R.I.P.(North Brooklyn’s Park Poobah),
Fat Boys remains can be found to the right of the entrance near the truck yard
I have lived in Greenpoint for ten years. In this time I have seen some seriously strange shit. SERIOUSLY. STRANGE. SHIT. We’re talking people fucking on sidewalks, drunk couples making out and stomping on cars, old Polish women lifting up their skirts and pissing on vacant lots. You get the idea. The previous having been written this makes the top ten. Easily.
Nonetheless it is a touching (if somewhat abject) tribute to Fat Boy. Whatever he was in life, he was clearly loved. And I have little doubt Open Space Alliance North Brooklyn will be pleased as punch to know the new park at the northern terminus of Manhattan Avenue (which they take credit for opening**) is, in fact, being used.
Albeit not in the manner they envisioned.

*Apparently this is not the case: I have just received word “Fatboy” will be removed tomorrow.
The Poobah writes:
Will be removed tomorrow.
While she’s at it maybe she’ll get someone to find a more appropriate resting place for the dead rats and detritus at Bushwick Inlet?
**This too, is not true: someone (not me) got liquored up and pissed off and tore down the fence. The next day people started using the park— and shortly thereafter it was “opened” by the Parks Department (to save face).
New York Shitty Day Ender: The Donkey Oracle
I found this choice juxtaposition today at 975 Manhattan Avenue. This is crying out for a caption. Perhaps something regarding eminent domain abuse, eviction notices or Mayor Mike’s “one way ticket out of town” incentive for the homeless? Please tender your suggestions in the comments, dear readers.

Goodbye, North Henry Eatery. Hello, ass kicking kids!
In (somewhat) related news it would appear 159 Greenpoint Avenue is well on its way to becoming a Latin American restaurant.
SABOR!

Just as was the case yesterday I went out for another walk to enjoy the lovely fall weather. I followed my usual m.o., e.g.; taking subway somewhere (in today’s case the Jefferson Street stop of the L) and walking home. This may not be everyone’s idea of a good time but I enjoy it. Today was no exception save one disturbing trend: the numerous lost pet fliers I found along the way. Here they are— along with a few furkids who were lucky enough to be found by some very kind humans.
FLUSHING AVENUE
Notes/observations: I found a number of these fliers around the Morgan Avenue stop of the L so it is safe to presume he was probably found in this area.
GRATTAN STREET
Notes/observations: Judging from the condition of the flier I’d say this one has been around for a while. I found it around the corner from where Meatball calls home: Roberta’s Pizzeria. If you have seen Meatball— the coolest named dog EVER— please call his people at the above telephone number.
BOGART STREET
Notes/observations: This is disturbing as hell.
HERBERT STREET
Notes/observations: This one hails from a little closer to home: Herbert at Monitor Street. If you have seen Little Man (which happens to a nickname for one of yours truly’s felines) you know what to do.
CALYER STREET
Notes/observations: Although the flier was found at Calyer and Eckford Street, Bella was last seen at Manhattan Avenue and India Street. Judging the wording of this flier I have to wonder if Bella was lost or stolen. Stealing pets for resale (or reward money) is a cottage industry in Brooklyn. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: KEEP AN EYE ONE YOUR PETS. DO NOT LEAVE THEM UNATTENDED. PEOPLE CAN AND WILL TAKE THEM!!!
In closing I will leave you with this lost dog alert from my friends at District Dog.

Bushwick Inlet Watch: Progress

This weekend the Mister and I took his parents to Pop’s Clothing— and in so doing I stumbled upon a most pleasant surprise.
The owner of this property has begun removing all the overgrowth and garbage. Sort of.
The box with the dead rat is still there.
And now he has a friend! I made it a point this out to my mother and father in law. When I brought the sorry state of Bushwick Inlet up with the owner of Pop’s he had a number of interesting observations to share. Among them:
- This is a chronic problem.
- He was once almost ticketed for littering when he attempted to clean up this property (because he couldn’t take it anymore). He was told in no uncertain terms that he cannot mow his neighbor’s yard.
- There is a homeless encampment on this site.
Sure enough, he was right.
Curious to see if the clean-up at Bushwick Inlet was a fluke (or a figment of my imagination) I returned yesterday to see what’s shaking.
Sure enough, they had cleared a little more. At this (glacial) pace I imagine they’ll be done in a week.
The “box-o-fun” is still there— as is the dead rat. Albeit a little worse for wear.
Yummy.

New York Shitty Day Starter: Beware Of Dogs
Don’t less this pup’s stern expression fool you: he is a great big cream puff! After taking the above picture he licked the bejeezus out of my hand— with his owner’s permission, of course. One should never, ever pet a dog without his “person” being present!
