Yesterday afternoon’s cloud cover was a beautiful sight— albeit a very brief one. I took a moment to capture it. I’m glad I did!

I have had this brought to my attention by a number of people, including a Dupont Street resident who sent me the above photo. She writes on December 29th at 10:11 p.m.:
About 30 minutes ago, Dupont & Manhattan was lit up like a Christmas tree. Ambulances, squad cars, the works. The word on the street is that a young man was stabbed to death. I hope it isn’t true.
Unfortunately, it is true. Per the NYPD via an anonymous tipster:
On Monday, December 29, 2014 at approximately 2037 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a male assaulted at 131 Dupont Street within the confines of the 94th Precinct. Upon arrival, police observed a 37 year-old conscious male with a stab wound to the torso. Upon investigation, it was determined that the victim had a dispute with another male in the vestibule of the location when the victim was stabbed. EMS transported the victim to Bellevue Hospital and he was pronounced DOA. The are no arrests at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
*****UPDATE 12/30/14 LT A*****
The deceased has been identified as:
Truszkowski, Zbigniew
37-year-old male
131 Dupont Street
Brooklyn, NY

Miss Heather,
I’m sure you’ve heard of the water tower buffing. Truly sad to see it go. It took many years of talking about it but I got an up close look last year. Feel free to post the attached photo…
I too am sad to see this nugget of Greenpoint glory go. Thanks for the memory, gothamruins. It means a lot. In closing I feel compelled to note I recently acquired this print showcasing the “Wondrous Water Towers of New York City”.
It goes without saying the Garden Spot represents.
Here’s looking at you, kid.

Or: Announcing Animal Rescue of Queens!
This event was brought to my attention by some fellow (and downright awesome) animal lovers here in north Brooklyn. What’s more they were kind enough to help me arrange to meet Howard Wu, the fellow who is behind this new (and much-needed) endeavor: Animal Rescue of Queens! Follows is a synopsis of our conversation.
Who: Mr. Wu has worked and volunteered in NYC animal shelters and rescue organizations for ten years. As such he has first-hand experience in animal rescue.
Where: Now he is striking out to start his own organization in Long Island City. To this end he has purchased a building at 11th Street and 44th Avenue.
When: Once the building is vacated, February 2015, Animal Rescue of Queens (“ARQ”) will need to thoroughly rework the space. This will cost $75,000 and includes (but is not limited to):
- Installing a new heating system and ventilation
- Overhauling plumbing and electrical wiring
- Roof repairs
- Refurbishing the adoption space to make it comforting for two-legged and four-legged critters alike. THINK: not what one thinks of when he/she hears the words “animal shelter”. Or, as Howard put it:”Our adoptable dogs and cats will receive a high level of care, and will be taught the skills needed to make transitioning into a home as seamless as possible, for them and their adopters. To do this, the center will be set up with rooms and not cages. The rooms will contain home furnishings, just as would be seen in a home environment.”
How: Howard explained to me his vision for “ARQ”. Simply put, he wants to create an adoption center where animals and potential adopters alike feel comfortable. He wishes to see the animal shelter/adoption experience as a welcoming, community-based one wherein folks can meet and make a friend for life. Hence why the pup featured on the above flier (and his business card*) wears a cape; the human/pet relationship is a two way street. It not simply a matter of “rescuing” an animal. Furkids are our companions. They cheer us up when we’re feeling down; love us when we feel unloved. The list goes on and on.
They are our heroes.
as he put it. Who can disagree with that?
This is why “ARQ” needs our help: they need funding to make these renovations happen! To this end they are having a fundraiser at Sweet Science this upcoming Sunday, December 7th. Check it out!

Otherwise, he has informed that me come February he plans to have an open house and fundraiser featuring artwork for auction. Take note, my north Brooklyn/Queens artist comrades!
*which also features a cat— but not prominently enough to satisfy this cat lady! Hey, you do not expect me not to good-naturedly bust his chops about this?
Really?
New York Shitty Videos Du Jour: Season’s Beatings From Manhattan Avenue
Filed under: 11222, Criminal Activity, Gentrification, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
I cannot tell a lie: I hate the “holiday” season. It seems to bring out the very worst in otherwise normal, rational people. Call me a “Humbugger” all you want, gentle readers. Nowadays I confine yet another winter of my discontentment to snow globes. This is not simply therapeutic. It is better than, say, standing on the sidewalk yelling while brandishing a billy club. Which is exactly what came to pass on Manhattan Avenue late this afternoon.
I know what you’re thinking:
Exactly what lead up to this?
Well, if you listen carefully to the following video you will get some idea.
NOTE: I wrote “some idea”. As you can plainly see the fellow in question did not run away. And, well, further taunting an alleged assailant by screaming “Bitch” at him? This does not strike me as being a very good idea. Neither is wielding a billy club for that matter:
Don’t believe me? Read the law for yourselves here.
Ho! Ho! Ho!
