I’m not sure I would ever recommend anyone go to the McCarren Park Pool unless you just got out of prison.
That might be a bit of an overstatement. However, the anecdote about the lock and link to the unofficial McCarren Park Pool’s web site (which features some pretty amusing stock photography, including a fellow holding a bottle of beer)— among many other things— make this tome worth a moment of one’s time. Enjoy, gentle readers— or not!
Now if you don’t mind, I am off to acquire a slew of locks and white t-shirts to sell to pool goers at 300% mark-up. One woman’s misfortune is another’s business opportunity!
Props go to Miss Mousey Brown for bringing this to my attention!

1. There were not any when I took the above shot yesterday at ~3:30 p.m. As of 2:00 p.m. today I was told these garbage cans were still not in place.
2. Yes, I can personally attest there were Parks Officers working the line— which stretched around the corner into Bayard Street.
From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: Grand Street Walks!
A very nice fellow from the Grand Street Business Improvement District* writes:
My name is Jaime Paniagua, I am with the Grand Street Business Improvement District. On July 14th & 21st the Grand Street BID will be hosting a Weekend Walk Block Party. Is it possible for you to add the Weekend Walk Block Party to your webpage?
True confession time: Yours truly L-O-V-E–S Grand Street! So naturally I am more than happy to oblige Mr. Paniagua’s request. You can learn more about these block parties and the Grand Street “BID” in general by clicking here or perusing their Facebook page. Check it out!

*Whose head honcha (I mean this in the nicest possible way), Artineh Havan, was recently sworn in as a Community Board 1 member. Not only is she a very nice lady, but one of her goals is to reopen the tunnel from the Lorimer Street stop of the L train which provides egress for subway patrons to Grand Street. There is one— and not only does Ms. Havan want it accessible to the public (again) but I do too. Let’s make it happen, north Brooklynites!

If there is one photo that best summarizes the homeless problem in this park— and north Brooklyn in general— this is it. This fellow was the source of considerable curiosity and bemused interest by parks and pool patrons as I walked by this afternoon. Concerned he might be susceptible to— if not presently experiencing— heat exhaustion/stroke, I spoke to the Parks staff at the (nearby) field house. In closing, I would like to take a moment to express my gratitude for securing the medical attention this man so clearly needed. Thanks guys (and gals)!
Spotted On Roebling Street…
While probably an exercise in futility (or optimism, depending on one’s take) you have to give these folks credit for amusing/catchy flier copy. If anyone reading this post knows the whereabouts of the electronic device in question (an i-Phone 4S), do the right thing and return it to its “parents”. It’s the right thing to do— and thanks!
