Williamspoint Slide Show Du Jour: 2001-2004 B.C.

Before and After 911nys

The above photograph is probably in some part responsible for motivating me to write about Greenpoint. Like most things in my life, it was an accident. I had shot a roll of film, then 9/11 happened. Not having the means to buy more film I rewound it, thus creating this double exposure of life on Manhattan Avenue juxtaposed with Manhattan going black.

I do not want to suggest that this photo set is dark. It isn’t. The Garden Spot of the Universe and the people who live here are resilient and vibrant. But it does make one wonder about how things have changed since these photographs were taken.

My favorite is this one, lest you are wondering.

Williamspoint Slide Show Du Jour: Old School

PartytimeNYS

This weekend yours truly has been getting caught up on a few things I have been meaning to do, but have never gotten around to doing. One of these tasks has been organizing, scanning and uploading my collection of photographs from Williamspoint of yesteryear (such as the rather awesome one which graces the beginning of this post). I am proud to announce that I have begun this arduous process. Follows is a slide show featuring what I have processed so far. Enjoy!

As the previous sentence indicates, I am far from done with this project. You can anticipate more great old pictures in the (hopefully) near future! Tomorrow I will be featuring another slide show of some of my photographs taken in Williamspoint from 2001-2004 B.C. (before the real estate crash). Boy, how things have changed!

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Change Has Come

This item comes courtesy of a friend of mine named Matt:

Hey there Heather!  I know you don’t normally post much in the way of music videos but I thought I’d pass this onto you since a) I shot it and b) a lot of it was shot in Greenpoint/Williamsburg/Bushwick in front of a lot of the graffiti murals out there.  At the very least, I hope you enjoy it!

Duly enjoyed, Matt. Thanks for sharing! Those of you who want to hear more of Will Pilot’s music can do so via their Myspace page.

In closing, here’s an item that might be of interest to you dog lovers out there: Dog Habitat’s Black Friday Adoption Event!

adoptionday

Jay Lombard (of Dog Habitat, who sent me the above image) writes:

Hey lady! We wanted to invite you to visit our adoption event tomorrow from noon to 5 p.m. Eight rescue dogs available for adoption from puppies to adolescent age. Pure breeds and brooklyn mutts. Please help us find homes for these beautiful pups!

I was initially confused by Jay’s missive. There are no ladies at New York Shitty. But I do appreciate the sentiment and will certainly make it a point to swing by and say “hi” these lovely pups. You should too.

In closing this post goes out to Lisacat who did her best to assuage the suffering of an auto shop cat named Bondo. I am certain wherever he is (junkyard cat heaven?) he is grateful for your hard work. I know I am.

P.S.: While I am (ostensibly) on the subject of fur, I discovered something on Manhattan Avenue today that really bothered me.

The above photograph graces Forgotten-NY’s Greenpoint page. Regarding this wonderful example of old school signage Kevin Walsh writes:

When you’ve got a good sign, you don’t need to ever replace it. The old school phone number, probably EVergreen, is still there too.

That is, of course, unless you are Belvedere Partners Corporation. In which case you drill a “For Sale” sign on top of it. I can’t honestly say I am surprised that they saw fit to do this. These folks have been peppering north Brooklyn with balconized Neoclassical crap for years. One of their latest opuses graces Skillman Avenue. It’s a real beauty. It goes without saying you can look forward to seeing it on New York Shitty. Soon.

Williamsburg Photo Du Jour: Never Say Never

never

This missive (which hails from Broadway just shy of Gerry Street) reminds me of a former roommate of mine. One day, after tiring of looking at his besmirched manties (which had been gracing the bathroom floor for no less than two days) I took action. I put on a pair of latex gloves, deftly placed the offending item in a Ziploc bag (with the “business” showing) and taped this parcel at eye level onto the refrigerator. The next day they were gone. Nothing was ever said, but he never did it again. Billy— wherever you are— this one’s for you.
