New York Shitty Day Ender: The Unbearable Blightness of Being

As I mentioned previously, the online and offline zeitgeist in north Brooklyn— be it northside, southside or even Greenpoint was on decidedly on the surly side today. I have spent a great deal of my day patiently listening to people complain about one thing or another that pisses them off. Now it is my turn.

unpoliced

I have no idea who inscribed this on the rapidly deteriorating construction fence which graces this site, but he or she hit the nail on the proverbial head. Follows are a few amenities you can find at this property located in the heart of fashionable Williamsburg.

Pockmarked sidewalks and garbage.

LOTS OF GARBAGE.

As the previous photograph indicates, this open air loft has an open door fence policy. Any and all are welcome to come on over, sit a spell and hang their hat.

Or in this case, a coat.

I have written about this site on a number of occasions. They have since sealed off the garage door which had been pried open. With predictable results.

But Bloomblight isn’t just about derelict lots. Just take this, for example.

sidewalkshed

The above summons is for a defective sidewalk shed. Somehow the heap of garbage (which includes a suitcase) was overlooked.

And last, but hardly least…

This failed attempt at public safety hails from North 6 Street just west of Wythe Avenue.

caution

Lest I have not made it clear already I strongly believe people respond to the environment around them. This is why I am a big fan of public art— especially in our subway system. Gestures as grand as a mosaic or as simple as keeping public facilities neat and clean send a positive message. The vigilance (or this case, lack thereof) with which our municipal government enforces the laws put in place to preserve our, the citizenry’s, quality of life speaks volumes about their attitude as public servants.

This is unacceptable. No one should have to live with this.

Stolen Dog Alert: Has Anyone Seen Buddy?

buddy

I found a number of these fliers on and around Bedford Avenue today. Per a different flier I found Buddy was taken between 12:00 – 7:00 a.m., December 10, 2009 from 100 Metropolitan Avenue . He is three years old and has neither a collar nor tags. If you have seen Buddy or know of his whereabouts, please contact his person at the above-listed telephone number. NOTE: do not try to handle Buddy yourself. He is fearful of strangers.

UPDATE, 9:49 p.m.: Buddy has been returned to his rightful owner!

Williamspoint Photos Du Jour: Old School, Part II

Associated FoodNYS

For your delectation this chilly Saturday afternoon here is a second installment of vintage photographs from Greenpoint and Williamsburg as culled from my collection. Among the treats in store are a number of wonderful photographs from Manhattan Avenue, the Green Oaks Club and Peter Pan Bakery; and a shot of our very own State Representative Joseph Lentol looking incredibly stylish. Enjoy!

Note: as an added bonus I tossed in some printed material. It is a document outlining the proposed changes and upgrades to be made at McCarren Park. Be sure to view the accompanying map at full size. It’s a hoot!

UPDATE, 9:40 p.m.: It has been brought to my attention that the rather handsome chap at far left wearing “earth shoes” is none other than Community Board 1’s very own manager, Gerry Esposito!

Vintage Street Seating Du Jour: Todo Libre

Last night I spent five hours doing something I have long needed to do: sort my collection of photographs. When I found the above item I had a moment of nostalgia. This, my first documented piece of street seating, was taken in 2005 and hails from none other than 80 Metropolitan Avenue. Formerly known as the Dutch Mustard Factory.

P.S.: I have more images of old Greenpoint and Williamsburg to share with you today so stay tuned!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Questions About My Photos

SHEBANYS

Eryana writes:

I am a fan of your website and your photography.  I won’t be able to make it to the opening at t.b.d. tonight as we have our office holiday party. I was wondering if your photography would be for sale online at any point?  Otherwise I can wait for January.

I have given this matter some thought. Here’s my “plan”—- inasmuch as I trifle with such matters. Life has a funny way of rendering human endeavors void and useless at its caprice. Therefore, I endeavor to be flexible.

  • I realize a number of folks are harried this time of year…
  • and for this reason may or may not have the time to swing by t.b.d. to see my show.
  • Therefore, I have posted a “virtual exhibition” online!
  • Although I would highly recommend that you see these images in person (they’re much more engaging and bereft of obnoxious text claiming them as my creative property), I am amenable to selling “online”. Anyone who is interested in purchasing any of these prints should shoot me an email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Which brings me to a question my buddy Rowan asked last night:

Will these be a limited series?

The answer is yes! Here’s the deal:

  • Lest the delightful situation arises that more than one person wants the same photograph, I will gladly oblige. And thus a series will be born! I will gladly sign and number each and every print. But here’s the catch:
  • After January 7, 2010 (which is when I will be having a “proper” closing reception) I will NOT be making any more reproductions of these photographs. No “ifs”, “ands”, or “buts”. That’s it. Finito! No mas!

On that note, dear readers, today’s offerings will probably be lite in light of the fact I am totally exhausted after hanging my show at t.b.d. and mingling with friends— new and old. Inasmuch as I can deduce I pulled a 12 hour day yesterday! I need a cat nap.
