Urban Fur: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tabby

Yesterday, not unlike the day before it, was a busy one. When all was said and done I wanted one thing and one thing only: a Pina Colada. This has become my drink of choice lately and seemingly none of the copious watering holes hereabouts make them. Luckily these are easy enough to create. To this end I headed to the Mini Mart Deli Grocery at Eagle Street and Manhattan Avenue for supplies. (For those of you who are not in the know they have a pretty nice selection of juices.) And last night I learned they have added something— or should I say someone— to their rather already eclectic establishment.

Meet Tiger.

He was almost as curious about me as I was about him. Almost.

He preferred my camera strap.

Not this deterred him from subduing a particularly vexatious piece of twine and guarding the cat food. It didn’t. This little guy may new to the job but he is learning the ropes! No pun intended.

mini mart

True to the proprietor’s word the Mini Mart Deli Grocery at 1068 Manhattan Avenue is open for business!

Intrigued by the palette containing ten pound bags of onions for a $1.99 (a bargain at twice the price) I went inside to see what’s up. It is still very much a work in progress— but all the essentials are there, e.g.; coffee, tea, toiletries and the like. There were also a couple surprises:

  • The (admittedly limited) produce section sports some of the freshest veggies I have ever seen north of Green Street.
  • A vast assortment of Indian sweets graces the space next to the cash register. When I went to purchase my $1.00 extra large cup of tea (per the owner this was a “special grand opening offer”) a woman was busy selecting her confection of choice. It was a time-consuming decision (hey, I understand) but she was pleased with her choice. And the proprietor, who is a very nice guy, promised her a free cup of coffee in return for her patronage.

This same gentleman assured me he will be stocking a vast array of “heat and eat” Indian foodstuffs (starting at buck a pop) for north Greenpointer’s (24 hour) delectation. I can hardly wait!

minimartI shared the good news about this, what will be the only 24 hour bodega north of India Street last month. In that post I wrote:

…When will it open, you ask? I do not know— but I am going to keep swinging by until I can find someone to ask!

Today I found out. Per the owner (who was busy overseeing the installation of shelving and refrigeration units) the Mini Mart Deli Grocery will be open in “10 to 15 days”. That’s not too far off, folks. From what I saw he is already stocking up on nonperishable sundries and has had a menu drawn up outlining what food stuffs will be made to order. Think the usual fare: egg sandwiches, bagels and the like.

Although my enthusiasm about this establishment has not been shared by some, I for one will be delighted with not having to schlep to India Street in the dead of winter for a package of maxipads. It’s the little things which make life worth living.

New York Shitty Day Ender: A New Bodega For North Greenpoint

In addition to learning the good news about “El Blablazo”, I was pleased as punch to see the long-vacant space at 1068 Manhattan Avenue finally has a tenant. What’s more, it will be a bodega (or as I like to call them “deligros”).

Anyone who lives north of Freeman Street will attest that is there is a dearth of quality grocery stores (and many other necessities, like laundromats, for example) in far north Greenpoint. Hopefully Mini Mart will be a first step in redressing this. When will it open, you ask? I do not know— but I am going to keep swinging by until I can find someone to ask!
