Urban Artifact: Old School

There’s presently a rather spectacular array of discarded electronics on Greenpoint Avenue between Manhattan Avenue and Franklin Street. This iMac (which somehow found its way inside a tree pit) struck me as a true stand-out. What’s more, these can be retrofitted into rather nifty cat beds for those who may be so inclined and want to save a few bucks…

Somehow I am reminded of the adage emblazoned on the Farley Post Office:
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these
couriersPrison Bear from the swift completion oftheir appointed roundsvigilant watch over Greenpoint Avenue.
And of course two sets of bars do not hurt. In any case, he has an acquired a new and rather apropos companion in the manner of a penguin. Excellent.
Reader Contribution Du Jour: FYI
Those of you who may be harboring the notion of checking out the fire (at least what is left of it) today, don’t bother: security has been hired. The above fellow, apparently. NOTE: Stefano Giovannini (whose photo this is) presented his city-issued press pass to the police. They told him to leave. So there have you.
Reader Contribution Du Jour: Shots From Today’s Fire At Citistorage
An immensely talented and all-around nice guy, Stefano Giovannini, braved the cold and took some wonderful photos of our city’s Bravest fighting what is apparently now a seven alarm fire. Do take a moment to peruse his Flickr set here. They are not only lovely (if one can call such subject matter that) but are an excellent testement to the hard work and dedication of our firefighters.

This just goes to show it is always a matter of perspective. Weather which we humans may consider inclement is downright cozy if the person in question happens to consist of snow! Note the can of Coca Cola at bottom right. Very nice. A shout-out of thanks goes out to Rebecca Poole for bringing this item (which hails from Forest Hills, Queens) to my attention. Thanks!
