New York Shitty Feral Furniture Watch: 32 Days & Counting!

Many of you have probably noticed my blogging has been sporadic of late. There are a couple of reasons for this:

  1. Yours truly is moving.
  2. Yours truly has been sick with whatever cold/sinus nastiness which has been inflicting folks hereabouts.

Today (after moving another salvo of shit stuff) I felt well enough to take a walk. I wanted to enjoy the pleasant weather. What’s more, I wanted to check in on my favorite al fresco living suite. Yes, I write of none other than the North 10th Street duet.

On November 4th I noted the chaise lounge to the right had moved a mite bit and given some valued-added in the way of a tag. Fascinating. So what did I see today, you ask?

My heart sank when I saw the boulder all by its lonesome self. But then I turned around and…

there they were!

Note how they are perfectly astride the building.

They appear to have acquired a hefty helping of guano as well. Why did the feral furniture cross the road? Beats the hell out of me. Those of you who are keeping count (and you know who you are) we’re at 32 days and counting!

To be continued…

The Word On The Street, Part I: Special Q & A Edition

Thought of the day: something I have become very aware of when I am out and about taking photos is the fact that my presence does have some impact on any/all human subjects I capture. Or to put it differently: all portraiture, be it deliberate or accidental, is colored by the interaction between photographer and subject.

So let’s take what happened when I was trying to take a photograph of a rather substantial construction fence I spied this afternoon. A 20-something fellow decided to wave his arms, shout:

Be sure you get me!!!

and generally be obnoxious. Would he have done this if I was, say, a 6’2″ 200 pound man? Probably not. He’d be afraid of having his ass kicked. Am I upset about this? No, not really. What this fellow didn’t know was what I was attempting to document. Had he known this I suspect he would have deported himself differently. I for one am glad he didn’t!

As some of you might recall, the 94th Precinct has an officer who resides in the Rockaways. Wishing to help their neighbors in need, our Finest are taking collections at their HQ at 100 Meserole Avenue. Here is what they need the most:

As of now, toys are not being collected. What is need are diapers, cleaning items and garbage bags.

As you will note Mr. Hurson states toys are presently NOT being collected. This was not a random bit of information on his part. Rather, it was in reply to an inquiry from yours truly. One which I am going to publish here. Very simply put, the proprietress of the Williamsburg Greenpoint News + Arts and myself are endeavoring to implement a toy drive. Our thinking is come next month there will be a LOT of children in our fair city who could really use some holiday cheer.

This project is very much in the works. Nonetheless, I am asking the following of you, gentle readers/fellow bloggers:

  1. We need goodies.
  2. We need businesses to serve as drop-off points for said goodies.
  3. We need help getting these goodies collected and dispatched. And most importantly of all:
  4. We need to know where to deliver said goodies!

Regarding the lattermost item: Obviously the Rockaways will be one— but surely there are other communities which have been overlooked? Anyone interested in helping with any of the above-listed points please shoot me an email at missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Please indicate “Toy Drive” in your subject line. Thanks!

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool, Part II: Law & Order In Hunts Point

Law & Order: Hunts Point, Bronx

Chris Arnade, who took the above photograph, opines:

In a very empty part of Hunts Point, at 2am, they were filming a Law & Order episode. It was about prostitutes, pimps, and the feds in Hunts Point. It was all costing tons.

The pimps drove large caddies and wore outlandish suits. The prostitutes were SoHo models slumming it, in glam sleazy outfits.

In Hunts Point the pimps don’t have cars and the prostitutes rarely have homes to store fancy outfits. The money goes to feeding an addiction, not a lifestyle.

The Feds hardly come to Hunts Point.

To see what they really look like check out this series here: Faces of Addiction
