Thursday May 30 2013Time & Location: Thursday May 30 @ 9PM. Location- The East façade of The Domino Sugar Factory on Kent Avenue between South 2nd St and South 3rd St in Williamsburg Brooklyn.
Background: Williamsburg Independent People ( WIP ) a group of community members who are presenting a light show protest by the Illuminator. The Illuminators mission is to smash the myths of the information industry and shine a light on the urgent issues of out time. The Illuminator art collective disrupts the patterns of everyday life, and embodies the social and political transformations for which the occupy movement/99% movement continues to fight.
Our Demands: WIP intends to offer a community buy-out of the site.
WIP believes that like Penn Station, the destruction Domino without exploring a different vision for this historic site is a mistake in the making that can’t be undone.
WIP offers a solution that is better for the Community City and State by creating a cultural center which would include affordable housing for the community,
private museum spaces, a hotel, marina, green roofs and vertical gardens and would demonstrate green technology by using alternate means, wind, wave, geothermal and solar to produce all the energy to run the facility.The Domino Sugar Site would be part of a 5 borough cultural attraction that is reachable by ferry boat.
The members of WIP are increasingly dismayed that the Two Trees’ plan fails to properly consider the impact of extreme density or consider any kind of alternative to enhance this historic industrial site. We have a greater vision that would benefit the City and the community.

Have you seen this?
No, I had not. However, being one who takes the issue of bicyclist/pedestrian safety— and traffic enforcement— quite seriously, I contacted the folks at Permanent records to find out what happened. A very kind fellow named Matthew wrote me back. here’s what he had to say:
Hi Heather… thanks for getting in touch. I’m a little hesitant to divulge too many of the specifics right now… Meg is recovering from surgery and I don’t want to inadvertently give more details than she is comfortable with. The accident happened south of Greenpoint on her way up (I believe) Classon, and she was essentially knocked off her bike and then run over by a truck. Her injuries will likely have her immobile for some time, but all things considered, we’re extremely grateful things aren’t worse.
I’d be thrilled if you’d be willing to share this story and help out our cause here. You can also let people know that some friends of the shop have already donated some goods, including rare and out of print records, and we’re gonna set up some sort of auction or raffle fundraiser for them… we’ll have those details soon. And if you’d like more specific details on the actual accident, once Meg is up for it, I’ll put you two in touch and she can get them all to you.
As you can imagine Meg has a big road ahead of her. I suspect I speak on the behalf of everyone reading this tome when I write that I hope she makes a full recovery. Those of you who wish to make a donation so as to help with Meg’s medical expenses can do so via Paypal or by dropping off money, checks and donations for the auction at Permanent Records:

A person we’ll “X” writes:
Hello Heather,
I love and applaud your coverage of 239 Banker Street. I have been living in this dump for the past five months and am eagerly awaiting my leave next week. I share your disdain for the illegal occupation of this building, and the complete disregard of the laws and stop work order violations by the management company. Perhaps you’re already aware but I figured I’d share a couple things with you-
Windowless rooms are being rented as bedrooms, which is a fire hazard/illegal.
Secondly, there was recently a backup of plumbing on the first floor, and several apartments were flooded in the bathrooms out to the kitchen area, this water containing REAL HUMAN SHIT AND PISS (Emphasis mine— Ed. Note). Sorry, but it was atrocious. As a result the floor has buckled up and I can say with certainty that since the post-Sandy re-flooring job was done lazily (spaces as large as 3/16″ in certain parts of it), I am positive there is mold growing. I’m feeling extra spiteful of the building today so figured I’d shoot you an email.
Thanks— I honestly do not know what else to say (that I haven’t said many times before)…

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn!
Geraldo Rivera returned to his childhood park — our very own McCarren Park — and planted a tree. This tree replaces the original Geraldo tree which was uprooted during Super Storm Sandy. Geraldo donated that tree nearly 20 years ago. When it fell down the community reached out to him via his radio show and twitter and he wanted to help and donated the new tree.
It was nice to see Geraldo, the new Geraldo tree and the Geraldo Wishing Stump all in one place.
