Williamsburg Photo du Jour: North 4th Street
Filed under: Williamsburg
It is quite a rare occurence when I see something in a public restroom that compels me to run back and get my camera. And this is exactly what happened yesterday when I was dining at San Loco— much to my companions’ amusement and confusion.
The general perception is that Williamsburgers (and by implication, hipsters) are lazy. Nothing can be so far from the truth. As you can see this person is quite dedicated to dispensing free “cheap thrills”.

Studio B: Where The Fun Never Stops
My commenters are a very intelligent lot. Hence why I will open this post with a missive from addrobinson:
From everything I know about Studio B, other than the rooftop garden, none of this is new, the noise, the over capacity etc…. So what occurred recently that caused you to take such a strong stance against them?
Let’s imagine for a moment that I, a citizen, invited 140+ of my best friends to party on my rooftop (and I have a nice one, btw). Someone would call the cops and I’d be cited and/or thrown in jail.
In other words, it’s a matter of inequality. Studio B, despite having no permission to host events on their roof does so anyway. Nothing happens.
They have a Stop Work Order which they have not only seen fit to violate but have also removed from their front door. Once again, nothing happens.
Here is the garbage this establishment generates. Would you want to look at this 2-3 times a week? I didn’t think so. Will they get in trouble for this? Probably not.
At what point will the owners of this property, WS Delancey Realty LLC, be held accountable for their actions? Will it be today? They do, after all, have a hearing regarding their first (and undoubtedly not last) violation of their Certificate of Occupancy on this, Cinco de Mayo.
In closing here is a little footage I shot of this establishment yesterday afternoon. Note that the music they are playing is loud enough to be picked up by my dinky little digital camera from across the street.

TODAY: Time Out!
Today, May 3rd at 2:00 p.m. there will a community rally at 752 Pacific Street ( in the “footprint” of the proposed project). Per the press release I received from the incomparable (and overall very good guy) Phil DePaolo:
Call a Time Out on the Atlantic Yards Bait and Switch:
A Community Rally to Tell Governor Paterson to Halt the Atlantic Yards ProjectIf you only go to one major Atlantic Yards rally…this is the one:
A major community rally will be held Saturday, May 3, 2pm at 752 Pacific Street. The Council of Brooklyn Neighborhoods, Brooklyn Speaks, and Develop Don’t Destroy Brooklyn will join with community leaders and elected officials in calling for a freeze on all Atlantic Yards activities. The three sponsoring organizations represent thousands of New Yorkers that have had differing perspectives on issues raised by the Atlantic Yards proposal, but all agree that the current state of affairs is intolerable.
The following elected officials have confirmed attendance: NYS Senator Velmanette Montgomery, NYS Assemblywoman Joan Millman, NYS Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, NYC Councilwoman Letitia James, NYC Councilman Bill Deblasio, NYC Councilman David Yassky, NYC Councilman Tony Avella.
DDDB has always maintained that Atlantic Yards is not a feasible project. Recent developments in the financial markets and statements by the developer have made that certain, and call the entire project and its purported public benefits into question. The only thing currently with a timeline is the arena and its luxury skyboxes and acres of demolished vacant lots. Meanwhile our neighborhoods are being blighted by unnecessary demolitions for a project that is now a big unknown.
DDDB’s position remains the same as it has from the beginning—the project is bad for many reasons from process to finance to design, and we oppose it. The project should be scrapped; it’s time for a new plan to develop the rail yards in a democratic, fair and responsible way with genuine community participation.
So come on out on May 3rd — bring your friends, join your neighbors, fellow New Yorkers, elected officials and community leaders in telling Governor Paterson:
> No More Demolitions!
> No More Eminent Domain!
> No More Subsidies!
> No More Changes to Infrastructure!
Those of you who are interesting in making your outrage known, here’s how you can get there!
Subway:
2/3 to Bergen Street
B, D,M,N,R to Pacific Street
Q to 7th Avenue
C to Lafayette or Washington Avenues
2,3,4,5 to Atlantic Avenue
Bus:

Safety Is #1 At Studio B: 140 = 300
At 7:30 p.m. this evening I received the following missive from my buddy over at 11222:
they were putting the finishing touches on some wire fences meant to keep people from falling out of the roof garden. we’ll be going back over later with a camera.
My curiosity was killing me, so went by there at 8:30 p.m.
Exactly as stated, the wire mesh was in place and the rooftop party was getting started. Is Studio B legally entitled to have people in this space? No. But such trivialities as fire regulations, Stop Work Orders and Certificates of Occupancy doesn’t stop the owner of this establishment! Per an anonymous source, when queried as to what the capacity for this (illegal) rooftop garden was, the owner replied:
140— in other words 300.
Lest any of you harbored any doubts as to whether Studio B’s numerous safety issues were a matter of simple over sight. They aren’t.
Miss Heather
UPDATE: As of 1:30 a.m. I have been told the fire department has been called.
Correction: The F.D.N.Y AND the N.Y.P.D. were called (see comments). Look for more Studio B goodness May 5th!

Studio B: Today’s The Big Day!
Will Studio B follow through with their rooftop garden grand opening tonight? If what I saw earlier this week (a bunch of men preparing to unload construction materials) is any indication, it is a distinct possibility. I can hardly wait to see how this plays out! Stay tuned.

Marie Grasso Does Greenpoint
HOLY 311 OPERATORS! It would appear that Ms. Grasso and her funky bunch are set to make their indelible mark on the Garden Spot— and by “mark” I mean destroying stuff and making some very angry neighbors.
This is 186 Green Street. Or should that be this was 186 Green Street?* Note the new name for her business: MGM Demolition. This ploy is elegant in its simplicity: instead of addressing her firm’s less than professional conduct, just change the name of the firm and hope no one notices. Brilliant! Anyone care to place bets as to when this site will get hit with its first Stop Work Order?
With fine workmanship such as this (from Orient Avenue), I am certain it will happen soon enough.
In closing I would like to tender my sincerest sympathies to the residents of 15 Orient Avenue. Not only do they have to contend with Marie’s madness (as depicted above), but they also have to deal with this.
Be sure to check out the Stop Work Orders for this property (44 Maspeth Avenue), they’re a real hoot. Here is my personal favorite.
This classic complaint from last year is also worth mentioning for its almost Zen-like quality:
CLR STS AT THE ABOVE ADDRESS THEY ARE DOING CONSTRUCTION AND THE WORK THEY ARE DOING IS AFFECTING AROUND THE CORNER WIRES.THE CALLER HAVE NO PHONE SERVICE BECAUSE THE WIRES ARE BURIED UNDER THE WORK
If a contractor cuts off your telephone service and you complain to the Department of Buildings does it make a sound?
Answer: A resounding “NO”.
NO CONSTRUCTION WORK OBSERVED AT TIME OF INSPECTION. NO DAMAGED WIRES SEEN AT LOCATION
Miss Heather
*It is unclear what will be built here. Plans were filed last year for a five story (plus mezzanine and cellar) building. They were disapproved.
