From The New York Shitty Inbox: Grand Street’s Second Annual Window Display Competition!

postcard

The very nice lady who heads the Grand Street BID, Artineh Havan, writes:

Dear Miss Heather,

I hope that you are well and had a nice Thanksgiving. We are having our 2nd annual holiday window display competition next Saturday, December 14th from 1 to 4 pm. We hope you will mention it on your blog. If not, we totally understand.

We have asked high school art students to design holiday windows for 12 of our businesses and inviting the community to vote for their favorite.

To entice people to come to Grand Street we also have Santa walking around, free face painting and scavenger hunt for kids. We are also raffling off a $100 gift card for those who vote.

Below please find a little write up. I have attached our postcard for you, and this link to our website’s photo gallery shows a few samples from last year. We are very excited and cannot wait:

Due to last year’s successful event, the Grand Street BID has organized its 2nd annual window display competition. This year four schools—the Green School, The High School for Enterprise, Business and Technology, Progress High School, and the High School for Architecture and Design—are designing holiday windows for 12 businesses on Grand Street between Lorimer and Humboldt Streets in East Williamsburg.

The students will install the designs on Friday, December 13th, a day before the competition; and on Saturday, December 14th the community is invited to vote for their favorite window and be entered to win $100. The winning design students will also win a gift certificate to a local art store.

There will be free face painting at Café Chillo: 702 Grand Street; kids’ scavenger hunt and Santa on Grand Street as well as lots of specials and discounts.

The event this year is bigger than last, which had two schools and eight windows.

The goal is to promote our businesses by involving the community and showcasing students’ talents.

Thank you so much for your consideration, and I hope to see you on Grand Street.

Gladly posted— and thanks Artineh!

It would appear 161 Huron Street— including its trash can container— has become ad hoc sleeping quarters for our local homeless population.

BICscObservation: operating an illegal waste handling business (in Greenpoint no less) and having ~$1,000,000 in Federal tax liens are characteristics not generally associated with being a pillar of the community. Then again, we’re talking about north Brooklyn. NOTE: something my colleague Queens Crap fails to point out is Ms. Gina Argento-(Ciafone) is a member of our local Community Board. No Kidding.  Read it and weep…

I would be remiss if I did not remind everyone that in 2011 Mr. Argento offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a graffiti artist called BS (“Buttless Supreme”). Perhaps I am being petty, but quite frankly I find an allegation of illegal waste handing a mite bit more troubling. You can’t make this shit up folks. Start at 2:44 and see Tony Argento complain about graffiti “destroying the neighborhood” at this meeting of the 94th Precinct Community Council* for yourselves!

*The 94th Community Council (which is run but kick -ass ladies all) has given a plaque to Mr. Argento in appreciate of his contributions to the community. Of course this was before this Business Integrity Commission decisions was rendered. Whoops.

UPDATE, 10:38 p.m.: It has been brought to my attention that Gina Argento-Ciafone went on the record to none other than the New York Times about the graffiti problem here. This came to pass on August 9, 2013. Fascinating.

Welcome To Greenpoint

Park Bench With Seaweed and Algae

END

Today while running errands I opted to take the “scenic route” home. I decided to enjoy access to our waterfront! As you can see, I was not alone. Not surprisingly, the park bench— or would that be former park bench— is still in the East River. That has been its location for almost two months. Can I honestly say I am surprised by this? No— but it did get me to thinking. I have reached the conclusion I am looking at this all wrong. This is not an eyesore, it is an opportunity to give a nod to our community’s industrial heritage!

This pop-up park is located within eye shot of the USS Monitor’s launch site (as indicated by the top most arrow).

READY FOR ACTION

I propose a metal worker (or two) be hired to retrofit this piece of seating with some armor and a turret. Lo, instant public art! Is anyone with me on this?
