Animal Planet Lands In Greenpoint

The slightly older newcomers to this neighborhood will recognize this storefront. It used to belong to The Vortex* until February of last year. That’s when the landlord decided to double the rent from $2,000 to $4,000 a month. As a result, this property (which is located between Eagle and Dupont Street) stayed on the market for an entire year. It is an enormous (if ill-maintained) space. I would love to know what these people are paying for rent. I doubt it is four grand.

For pet owners in far north Greenpoint I suppose this is good news. I am cautiously optimistic. We already have Pets On The Run, NYC Pets, Petland, District Dog and (for those you willing to cross the bridge to LICLand) City Dog Lounge. I fear pet supply stores are going to become like Thai restaurants or banks here: too much of one thing.

Nonetheless, I wish them the best of luck and look forward to checking out their wares.

  2. Even though it’s in Williamsburg, PS9 (North 9th between Driggs & Bedford) is still my favorite local pet store.

  4. maybe they will not totally focus on dogs like other pet stores? i mean, among all those giant dogs on the sign, there are like 2 tiny birds!

petland icks me out. i went in there to get food for my frog, which comes in sealed containers, but i was too icked to even buy it there.

  6. As I live on Eagle Street, I am quite curious to see what is happening in the Northern end of Greenpoint considering that up until a few years ago, all businesses seemed to stop dead in its tracks at the corner of Freeman & Manhattan. Instead of a pet store, how about a late night bodega? (at least later than 12 midnight). If I want a snack after midnight I have to hoof it up to the corner of India & Manhattan and that place grosses me out so then I end up walking to the bodega on the corner of Greenpoint Avenue!

  10. I been to animal planet a lot recenlty and I noticed out of all the pet stores around they have good prices and they are one of the nicest people you will meet and it seems family owned. They have a large variety for all animals and they have a adoreable kitten and its one of the biggest pet stores I been in and the cleanest. They definitely did a great job with the store and i wish them best of luck.
