Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: A Reclaimed Storefront
First it was a bar, then it was an apartment, now 1030 1088 Manhattan Avenue is going to be…
a laundromat! This might not strike some of you as being “front page news” (it isn’t). But given there are only two laundromats north of Green Street, I suspect this will be very welcome news to my fellow north ‘Pointers.
Miss Heather
P.S.: While I was in the area I grabbed a shot of the space slated to become Milk & Roses.

Actually, the address of the first picture is 1088 Manhattan Ave, SE corner of Dupont St. and Manhattan Ave. After the bar closed (ca. 1980-81, it was converted into a storefront pentacostal church. 1110 Manhattan Ave. used to be a grocery store (Garcia Grocery).
1030 Manhattan Ave. is located between Freeman and Green Streets. Green Leaves Chinese Restaurant presently occupies that address. Previously, 1030 and the adjoining 1026 were the location of the world (well, neighborhood-wise, at least) famous Joe’s Department Store. 1024 were the offices of my friend Annmarie’s father’s business. 1022 was the home of Charlie’s Fruit and Vegetable Store, with the corner space occupied by the Zack Bros Meat Market. By the way, the laundromat on the NW corner of Green St. and Manhattan Ave. was, once upon a time, where the original Associated SupermarketMeat Market in Greenpoint was located. Just thought I’d share a bit of neighborhood history.
Duly corrected and your primer on north Greenpoint history is MOST appreciated. I love that stuff!
