Have you ever picked up one of these off-the-hook phones? You never know who might be on the other end, waiting to continue a conversation.
I spotted this interesting payphone in LIC. Two handsets are present, one on the hook and the other on the ground. It looks like a repair person just tossed the old one to the ground and went home:
Very nice!
These reminds me of a photo exercise we did recently on Nassau Ave, after noticing that on almost every pay phone people had left plates with left over food. They seem to serve as stand up tables for the homeless.
