From The New York Shitty Inbox: Lost On Kingsland

A person we’ll call “M” writes:

Hey,

Sorry to bog down your inbox with another missing-cat email, but I have to do all I can to try to get my kitty back. She escaped our apartment after a raccoon ripped a hole in the window screen. We live on Kingsland Ave. between Nassau and Driggs, and I think she must be hiding close by. She was formerly-feral, so might run if approached quickly or with lots of noise. I’m sure she’s super scared, but she’s not at all aggressive. She’s a medium-sized tortoiseshell, so mostly black with brown and cream flecks (short hair) and greenish-yellow eyes. I’m attaching a photo. She sat on my lap for the first time a few weeks ago in the year since I’ve had her, and I’m so sad that she’s gone now that she’s finally started to trust us.

I can be contacted 24/7 at 347.634.5073

If you happen to see Coco— or know of her whereabouts— please say something to M. I have been told string and wet food are the way to her heart. Thanks!

LAST GASP: More Dumping At The Manhattan Avenue Kayak Launch?

January 13, 2012 ·
Filed under: 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Newtown Creek

As some of you might recall, a lot of noise has been made, well, about the noise emanating from the property adjacent to the Manhattan Avenue Kayak Launch. For those of you who are not in the know, you can get up to speed by clicking here. I have not heard any complaints about this matter— or piece of public space— for several days. No worries, now I have a new one. Laura writes:

Hi Heather!
These pictures aren’t the greatest because Mike used his cell phone to take the photos. But Mike saw a Parks Dept employee dump a bunch of bushes in the Newtown Creek. (He’s not sure if there was anything else). He called ST (Stephanie Thayer, Parks Supervisor for all parks in Community Board 1 and Executive Chair of Open Space Alliance— Ed. Note.), who says something will be done.

Was this the handiwork of a Parks Department employee? Quite frankly it is too hard to tell given the photographs. However, this is one piece of foliage that didn’t make it to mulchfest!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: Billboard Down At Meeker & Graham Avenue

An anonymous tipster writes:

Brooklyn: BQE at Metropolitan Ave Hugh. Billboard  came down due to the high winds and resting on the expressway, Highway is closed.

By all appearances no one was hurt (I am awaiting a confirm of this from the head of the 94th Precinct). Nonetheless, commuters might want to avoid this area. YIKES!

UPDATE, 7:30 p.m.: here are a few more images courtesy of JUZTIN

My questions are now this: What, if any, regulations are there for billboards? Are they subject to routine maintenance— and if so, by whom? If so, was a lack of routine maintenance to blame for this? Did the inexplicable and horrific auto accident involving an office duty police officer recently possibly destabilize this sign? I don’t know— but I want to find out!

UPDATE, 9:43 p.m.: So apparently the billboard was located on the building in question and it appears the aforemention-auto accident is not a factor: citizen journalist Robin writes:

The car went off the other side of the BQE and one block up (south side , btwn Graham and Humboldt). The pole for this sign was in the back of the building it fell on (north side btwn Graham and Manhattan).
