THIS WEEKEND: Zywiec, Kielbasa, Pierogies & Polka!
This, the latest item for your consideration this upcoming weekend, comes courtesy of Miss Mousey Brown. Among other things she noted that Mr. Sturr is an 18 time Grammy winner (for Polka music, naturally) over the course of 21 years. For this reason this category has since been “retired”. Taking the previous— as well as the variety of Polish goodies in the offing— into account, I suspect this could be a very fun way to while away a Sunday afternoon!

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool: Big D
Chris Arnade (who took the above photograph) writes:
I was happy to run into Big D again, this time in my neighborhood. I wanted to give him a copy of the first picture I took of him: Big D
He was in a corner reading “America: Its people and places” by G. Gerosa. We caught up and then I told him about the series I did of people reading books and he agreed to let me take another picture.

FRIDAY: Supper Club Fundraiser at the Greenpoint Reformed Church
I was recently asked by one of the amazing ladies in charge of the Greenpoint Reformed Church (and its Hunger Relief Program) if I would help spread the word about their upcoming Supper Club fundraiser. This I will gladly do as they have— and continue to do— great work here. Here’s the 411 for this event their press release:
We are really excited for our October dinner! Holler (who played at our first supper club last year) will be playing old-time country music in the backyard during our special cocktail hour. As always the meal is TBD, but how could it not include squash, leafy greens, apples and pears?
Our supper clubs are designed to celebrate our community while raising money for our weekly soup kitchen dinners in a communal and convivial spirit. Please join us!
Every week we work to provide delicious, quality (organic when possible) dinners for the hungry folks of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In the bountiful summer months of the year, we have a lot of help from awesome farmers who, via several local CSAs, allow us to glean their overflow. Times are tougher in the lean winter months-our goal is to raise enough money to pay for fresh quality food to last through those cold months. Consider this our “un-can” drive! Help us make sure that “the best” is available for EVERYONE-all year long.
Dinner will be a four-course vegetarian meal using the same great local, organic produce that we use in our Wednesday night meal. The dinner is served family style-which we hope adds to the convivial spirit of the event! BYO wine and come early for a special (extra charge) cocktail hour.
Because our menu relies on the most seasonal produce from local farmers, please stay tuned for the exact details of the meal…
NOTE: a suggested $20.00 donation is requested and you must R.S.V.P. to attend. You can do the latter via the Supper Club’s Facebook page. Otherwise, you can contact the event’s organizer via email at: annefay (at) gmail (dot) com. Check it out!

Friends of Greenpoint Library
Who We Are: Friends of Greenpoint Library began in 2008 as a group of neighborhood volunteers who wanted to create a voice for the local library, and to advocate for literacy in the community. From these humble beginnings, the group started their own branch Friends group and has expanded out to community members and become the most active Friends group in the Brooklyn Public Library system. We are deeply committed to improving the quality of life in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and firmly believe that libraries and literacy are central to the civic life of our neighborhood community.
Event Details: The Friends of Greenpoint Library are looking for new members. We are a volunteer run, library advocacy group, and are active in the neighborhood. Our central goals are to:
Raise their community’s awareness and enthusiasm about the local library
Promote the local library’s resources and programs in the neighborhood
Keep local officials aware of the library’s importance to the communities they represent
Raise funds to enhance neighborhood library service.
Friends do everything from letter writing and making legislative visits to sponsoring library events; from planting gardens to organizing bake, craft and toy sales to musical performances for both children and adults. Just a little of your time can make a big difference for our community!
Those of you who are interested in joining this wonderful effort— or simply want more information— can contact the folks behind this endeavor via email at thefriendsofgreenpointlibrary (at) gmail (dot) com or check out their Facebook page!
