New York Shitty Day Ender: Fowl Play
Yes folks, it would appear that the New York Times has (once again*) become aware that there is a poultry slaughterhouse adjacent to a luxury apartment building in Greenpoint! Special thanks goes out to Jen Chung of Gothamist for this reminder. The previous props having been tendered, yours truly is especially fond of this passage:
While I am certain Franklin Avenue is animated (I have walked it) exactly how this thoroughfare pertains to Greenpoint is mystery to me. This is because Franklin Avenue is located elsewhere in Brooklyn. I’m going to take an educated guess that this reporter is referring to Franklin Street. I suppose in closing I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that one of the chaps they interviewed is being evicted because he has not paid rent in months. Whoops. Perhaps moving forward when the New York Times “sources” my site without crediting it they will go to the trouble of actually reading it?

*The image gracing this post comes from an item I had written on the subject on January 27, 2009. Clearly the New York Times was paying attention because they wrote an item about this very subject on February 15, 2009 and took the liberty of culling a quote from my site’s comments section:
…To some, the juxtaposition of a slaughterhouse and a new residential building where condos sell for up to $675,000 is an amusing effect of gentrification. To others, it is grotesque. Several local residents have complained about seeing blood and bird parts on the sidewalk, along with feathers floating in the breeze. Calls to 311 have been numerous, and on a Greenpoint blog, a commenter described the smell emanating from the slaughterhouse as a mix of “death and ammonia.”
Don’t believe me? See here for yourself! Reading is truly believing.
Spotted On Manhattan Avenue: Confirmation!
On April, 21, 2011 I wrote (in this post):
Yesterday I was amazed and actually quite pleased to notice signs of life at this long-derelict store front. Curious to know what was slated to grace this space I asked a man working on the premises. He said he was not completely certain but thought that the M & W Laundromat across the street was going to place a dry cleaning establishment there...
Well, this afternoon my intelligence was proven to be correct!
I’ll have to check with my favorite soft-serve lass, New York Shitty fact-checker; and overall Greenpoint badass, Miriam, about when this establishment will open. But in the meantime…

From The Brooklyn Daily Eagle Archives: Greenpoint Porcelain?
(And I ain’t talking toilets!)
I have had a number of interesting conversations this week. One of them came to pass as I was purchasing an ice cream sandwich. The proprietor of said establishment was rather amused when I had to pull a rather large vase out of my bag in order to secure the funds ($1.50) to pay for this item.
I explained that I had found it at the intersection of Havemeyer and North 9 Street, thought it rather lovely; and given the rather low risk for bedbugs opted to bring it home. He agreed that it was quite nice and added he had once toured a ceramics facility as a youngster. Being the Greenpoint history dork I am I informed him that the Garden Spot was once the home to a first class producer and purveyor of such products.* He seemed incredulous at this revelation but I assured him that this was in fact true. Follows is an item from the August 29, 1886 edition of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle to back me up. It is a rather long but nonetheless interesting read for a rainy day. Enjoy!
On a lark I did a little searching online to see what, if any, specimens of Greenpoint ceramics could be found online Follows are a few:
1. The Bicentennial vase at left was recently up for auction at Heritage Auctions. It is rather stunning if you ask me. Its estimated value was placed between $6,000 – $9,000 (and it didn’t sell).
2. The item at right (a Liberty cup and saucer) comes courtesy of the new Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Do give their tome about Union Porcelain Works a read. It’s fascinating!
3. Last, but hardly least, those of you who want to own a little bit of Garden Spot history (and have $200.00+ to spare) should check out this rather lovely Art Nouveau oyster plate for sale on Ebay!
I’d say in the clarity of 125 years of hindsight Greenpoint porcelain has avenged itself rather well!

And a Challenge!
Doug (took the above photograph) writes:
Hi, I thought I’d tell you that there are two hawks nesting somewhere in or very near McCarren Park. I’ve seen it (from the ground) already, pretty cool. I want to see how long it takes you to find it. Starting the clock now.
I for one think this is pretty darned neat. However, methinks I will take up Doug’s challenge in a day or two (clock notwithstanding). Web mistresses need a day (or two) off too! Thanks again for forwarding this find to me, Doug. It has made my day!
