New York Shitty Day Ender: Live From The 94th Community Council Meeting

That’s right folks: another month, another Community Council Meeting. Naturally I shot footage and am in the process of uploading it. How long this will take is anyone’s guess. In the meantime here are a few teasers/spoilers:

  1. The recent hate crime was brought up by a member of our local Community Board, Tom Burrows.
  2. Phyllis (a neighborhood and Community Council institution) was in particularly interesting form this evening.
  3. As is often the case, bicyclists and bikes were discussed. Those of you who are tired of seeing old, rusted out bike carcasses attached to street signs, fences, etc., do not despair: Hurson tells us how to get them removed!

They’re uploading. Albeit NOT in order.

Samuel Pierre From Mayor Bloomberg’s Office Speaks

D. I. Hurson gives a run-down of crime stats and opens the forum for questions.

GOOD NEWS

  • Crime is down by 22% for the month.
  • Crime is down for the year (?) by 14%
  • Burglaries, stolen cars (down 12%) and grand larceny (especially material stolen from cars— Hurson’s own wife made a “collar” on Calyer!) are down.

BAD NEWS

  • The matter of the hate crime which came to pass February 22, 2011. No arrests have been made.
  • A shooting on Jackson Street (NOT AVENUE near the “Cooper Projects”) Hurson then goes on to assure us that despite reports in the press, the staff at the 94th is at its usual level and opens the forum for questions. Community Board 1’s very own Tom Burrow’s kicks it off.

Q & A Session Continued: the matter of the Greenpoint Hotel is brought forth. Among other things.

Ending: An(other) Announcement about the Town Hall Meeting regarding the latest proposal for a 200 bed assessment center at 400 McGuinness Boulevard.

UPDATE, March 23, 2011: After numerous attempts it would appear that my footage of some really nice folks from the Greenpoint Youth Court is unusable. This is a shame since this is a really neat endeavor. For this reason I encourage you to check out their flier by clicking here. NOTE: they are recruiting and participants (between the ages of 14 and 18) receive a $100 stipend per month!

Queens Slide Show du Jour: D.U.P.A.L.I.C. & Beyond

59 Street Bridge

Yesterday was a rather trying one for yours truly. First it was my site crashing at midnight. This made me rather unhappy. Awakening to find it was still down made me unhappier. Realizing however this was due to factors way beyond my control I decided to revisit one of my favorite places…

Polish Paradise

Polish Paradise located in scenic D.U.P.A.L.I.C. (Down Under the Pulaski At Long Island City). As always, it did not disappoint.

Pylon

For starters, this is without argument the largest pot hole yours truly has ever laid eyes upon.

VERY SPECIAL

And of course there is the extensive array of empty liquor containers to be found at this location. I was particularly impressed with this 1.75 liter bottle of Hennessy. That stuff ain’t cheap! Arguably the most provocative part of my trek came to pass in a rather desolate part of Long Island City. It was there I was somewhat startled to hear someone shout:

Hey lady, why aren’t you in Greenpoint?

This came courtesy of the inimitable proprietress of Word Books: Christine Onorati. In any case (and without further ado) here are some highlights from my journey. NOTE/SPOILER: There’s some pretty neat street art at the end. Enjoy!

Williamsburg Street Seating du Jour: Tourism Special

This is the vision which met the Mister and I last weekend as we were strolling down Bedford Avenue. The above-depicted (and really nice) ladies and gentlemen were very interested in our interest in their little photo session. One even offered to let us sit there next. We declined and then tried— and failed— to explain the good news about the widespread bedbug problem in north Brooklyn.

I sincerely hope these folks do not come away from their vacation in our fair city with a little “added value”.

The Word On The Street: Je t’aime God

I’m not too sure what the message being conveyed here it definitely gave the Mister and I some, um, food for thought while strolling along Berry Street last night.

Irish Indian

This morning on a lark yours truly decided— against her better judgment— to take a stroll along our waterfront. I’m glad I did as I found a bevy of interesting things including a slew of new art work. Without further ado here they are. Enjoy!
