New York Shitty Day Ender: Snowy Greenpoint

I read your blog frequently, and I always appreciate your dedication to pointing out what is NOT working (and what is) in our neighborhood. Which brings me to my point of concern. Perhaps you’ll have some advice for me or at the least let your readers know of this sure-fire money making opportunity.
The Rite Aid that everyone loves on Manhattan Ave., the one with the disco interior that people like to show off to newbies and tourists, has a backside on Lorimer between Meserole and Norman. Maybe you knew this or maybe you didn’t. In any case, the manager of RiteAid appears not to know or care about the back of the building. Every single year the Lorimer side is neglected. This wouldn’t matter, but Lorimer Street is a very residential block with a fair share of elderly people, children, and dogs. Broken glass is strewn along the sidewalk which never gets cleaned up. There is no street light across the entire stretch of the building so that even though the building is around the corner from the police station, it becomes a haven for drunks throughout the night who leave their urine and feces about, which also never gets cleaned.
What bothers me most is that EVERY SINGLE WINTER they don’t shovel the sidewalk when it snows. And if ever they do, it’s a 5 inch path. This year is no different. Everybody on the block, including the elderly owners of buildings managed to clear their snow before 11am the next day after the storm – in other words, yesterday. It’s the law and no one wanted to get ticketed. It’s also a courtesy to the people in our community who have trouble walking down the street on the best of days. Rite Aid STILL has not shoveled. I called the manager of the store today and he said that he put in a call this morning to get it done. This morning. A day after everyone else in Greenpoint had already shoveled. They managed to shovel the Manhattan Avenue entrance yesterday morning, but not the Lorimer side. I’ve left a message with their corporate office and am awaiting a return call.
I would like to invite you or anyone to slip and fall outside the ass of their building and sue them.
Having seen the splendor— if you can call it that— which is the backside of this establishment myself I can personally attest it is revolting. Aside from perhaps taking photographs and submitting them via 311 online I am drawing a blank. Thoughts, anyone?

On that note I am going to crib— with credit— Sheepshead Bites work so as to illustrate the difference between my street and Bloomberg’s.
“Patience” my ass. This B62 bus (and numerous others) parked on our thoroughfares are not only inconveniences which afflict working Brooklynites but Long Island Cityites as well. But why should that matter? We do not live in Manhattan.

From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part III: Calyer is Clogged
If my inbox is any indication this would appear to be the winter of Greenpoint’s discontent. I can only hope to keep up. Nonetheless, here’s my third (and not final installment from the New York Shitty inbox wailing wall. JBG writes (regarding the above photograph):
I live on the corner of Calyer and Franklin Streets in Greenpoint. While Calyer is not an arterial, and is also not a truck route, the truth is that it plays a very important role, as it’s the first turn off from Franklin St. that connects northbound vehicles with McGuinness Blvd. There is a stalled vehicle in the middle of Calyer St., just north of Dobbin St. No one has attended to this stuck vehicle. The plow came up Calyer St. but couldn’t get all the way through because of the vehicle. Clearly, they backed out of the street. The street from in front of the vehicle all the way up to Manhattan Ave. is also still unplowed.
I am watching vehicle after vehicle make a turn onto Calyer St., see that it is blocked, and then backing out onto the very busy and not adequately plowed Franklin St. because they realize they can’t get through Calyer St., and they also can’t turn right at Dobbin St., because that road is completely unplowed.
The one-way system in Greenpoint effectively is now shuttling everyone up Greenpoint Avenue. This, combined with the fact that Franklin St. isn’t adequately plowed, is causing traffic backups. It’s only a matter of time until there’s a terrible accident; I already watched an ambulance and a squad car back down Calyer last night because they couldn’t get through.
This street is also a critical passage way to the 94th Precinct and to the Post Office over on Meserole.
I tried calling 311 but they will not take the complaint (if you can even get through, which you can’t any more). The Mayor is on TV right now touting how many stalled cars have been removed (HAHAHA! — Ed. Note.), but yet somehow this one is being overlooked. Could you have someone look into this as soon as possible? I don’t understand how this hasn’t been attended to given the proximity of the 94th precinct, the presence of DOT this morning in the area, and repeated police cars backing down Calyer.
You can read what our City Councilman has to say per Brooklyn Heights Blog. Given that many of the snow plows that are used to clear streets hereabouts are located under the Pulaski Bridge at Clay Street*— and that I am a Greenpointer— I find the negligence here particularly inexcusable.
