New York Shitty Day Ender: Hell, No!
Filed under: 11211, 11222, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Some of you might recall that my buddy (and cat woman extraordinaire), Lisa, tipped me off to the Hell, No! show at St. Cecilia’s Convent. Today I swung by to check it out. I honestly do not know what to say.
Well, actually I do. But speaking as someone who has five figures of student loan debt for a MFA in Sculpture— and in all fairness I did receive an excellent education, albeit whilst bearing witness to some of the best worst Sophistry bullshit I have ever had the misfortune to encounter— I’ll spare you the in-depth academic analysis. Or to put it more accurately: I want to be paid for it. Handsomely. In the meantime the following bullet points and slide show will have to suffice:
- Was it worth my time? ABSOLUTELY.
- Would I recommend this to my friends? Hell, Yes!
- Should people who espouse more traditional religious and/or gender roles see this show? Hell, No!
- What I particularly liked was how the art work dovetailed with its surroundings. I will readily admit I like neither galleries nor museums. Most of the previous have the feel of the New York City Museum of Natural History: a mausoleum filled with taxidermy and artifacts for delectation by the living.
- Hell, No! has to be experienced firsthand to be appreciated. The interactive nature of the exhibit is, in my opinion, one of its strongest points. I thoroughly enjoyed being left at my own leisure to explore each nook and cranny for new discoveries. This is what art— especially public art— should be about!
- The odd references/homages to historic works of art were charming, not cloying. This is especially true of the shopping basket homage to Constantin Brancusi by Christian Dietkus.
- I lay the odds of this being picked up by the mainstream media as a source of outrage (e.g.; an affront to traditional family values and/or blasphemy) at 9:1 in favor. Not that the “objectionable content” of this show bothered me in any way. It didn’t. I rather enjoyed it.
Without further ado here is a slide show (with video clips!) of highlights from my visit to Hell. Enjoy!

Crosstown Local Photo Du Jour: For Rent
Filed under: 11211, Bloomblight, Crosstown Local, Recession, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
If this sheet rock and Sharpie marker solicitation (which hails from outside the Keap Street entrance of the G and L trains at Metropolitan Avenue) is any indication I’d say times are getting pretty tough in the ‘Burg. The asking rent for these mystery digs has been excised. Anyone care to place a bid?

Urban Fur: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Tabby
Yesterday, not unlike the day before it, was a busy one. When all was said and done I wanted one thing and one thing only: a Pina Colada. This has become my drink of choice lately and seemingly none of the copious watering holes hereabouts make them. Luckily these are easy enough to create. To this end I headed to the Mini Mart Deli Grocery at Eagle Street and Manhattan Avenue for supplies. (For those of you who are not in the know they have a pretty nice selection of juices.) And last night I learned they have added something— or should I say someone— to their rather already eclectic establishment.
Meet Tiger.
He was almost as curious about me as I was about him. Almost.
He preferred my camera strap.
Not this deterred him from subduing a particularly vexatious piece of twine and guarding the cat food. It didn’t. This little guy may new to the job but he is learning the ropes! No pun intended.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Saturday Afternoon On Manhattan Avenue
Today a local character we at the junk shop know simply as “Plastico” (presumably due to his attraction to wares made of plastic) spent the afternoon regaling Manhattan Avenue with a taste of Little Poland. I have no idea what (if anything) he made in the way of tips, but it certainly provided a nice soundtrack to a balmy Saturday afternoon in the Garden Spot!

From The New York Shitty Inbox: HELL, NO! & A Huron Street Kitten Update
Filed under: 11221, 11222, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
This item comes courtesy of my friend and “foster mom” of the Huron Street kittens: Lisacat. She writes:
Hi Heather,
This show opened at the St. Cecilia Convent last night. I haven’t been yet but while taking some photos, the artist who actually made the “Hell, No!”, RJ Supa, waved from the steps. He gave me a press release and we chatted a bit. His hair was perfect… I’m intrigued and plan to go to one of the nights coming up this week. Lots happening at St. Cecilia’s lately! Rock ‘n’ roll in the school, dog training classes in the basement, tomato planters in the churchyard, film shoots and art all over the place… You can find more info on the convent show here.
P.S.: …the Huron kittens (which we have named Anna and Jerzy* — Ed. Note) are doing ok. They are still “runty” but eating and playing. I swear photos are coming soon 🙂
