From The New York Shitty Inbox: What’s That Smell?
(Another) Heather writes: Do you know what the gas smell is near Norman and Humboldt??? It’s very unpleasant and happening daily; seems to be coming from either Syrena Bakery or the water treatment plant. Just curious.
The funny thing I have observed about living a hop-skip from our waste treatment plant is I rarely smell it. Inasmuch as I can ascertain, McGuinness Boulevard serves as some kind of buffer. For this reason I welcome more “luxury” condos on Brooklyn’s “Boulevard of Death”.
Let the fine people who have the ability to pay $2,000+ a month in rent for “luxury” apartments have the honor of quaffing this stench from their balconies whilest watching more pedestrians and bicyclists being struck by speeding motorists. It’ll be just like ancient Greece, the spectacles of Rome and Death Race 2000 combined. How could I, a simple citizen living in a rent-stabilized apartment, deny them this genuinely Greenpoint experience? But I digress.
I promised Heather that while I had my suspicions as to where the smell was coming from (READ: the waste treatment plant) that I would consult an expert. I did. Here’s what she had to say:
At Norman & Humboldt it could be just about anything. That’s TCE, Oil, Sewage, Solid Waste territory.
But this person should :
- Call 311 and state that you are making an “odor complaint” regarding the “Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant” area
- Get a reference number
- Email the reference number to Christine Holowacz (NCMC liaison— That’s the Newtown Creek Monitoring Authority— Ed. Note) at nc (dot) mc (at) verizon (dot) net
DEP has been very helpful in the past sorting out where smells are originating. Many times it’s coming from them, but many times it isn’t.
It is the “isn’t” that should bother you, dear readers. If you smell something, SAY SOMETHING.
In closing I’d like like to give props to the person whose art work graces this post. It comes from Very Small Array and is one of four cartoons that were rejected by The New Yorker. In 2006.
It’s 2010. Greenpoint has (for reasons which mystify some of its own residents) gained the sinecure as the fifth most livable neighborhood in New York City. We’ve come up in the world. It’s time for a new ditty:
We are Greenpoint, hear us roar.
With a stench you can’t ignore!
Shame on you, New Yorker, for your lack of vision— or would that be olfaction? Change has come! You can smell it in the wind. No worries, you get used to it after awhile.

Name These Kittens: The Bed-Stuy Quartet
Filed under: 11216, 11222, Bed-Stuy, Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Queens
Yesterday I had the blues so I went for a walk. I’m glad I did. It was on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg that I learned things could always be worse. For example, I could be this guy— or worse yet, his ex-girlfriend. So it goes. Today I met some little ones who had an even rougher life… and they’re only six weeks old!
When Jay of Dog Habitat told me last weekend that they just got in a litter of kittens rescued from Bed-Stuy naturally I had to make their acquaintance.
Here they are!
These two are definitely the more outgoing of the bunch. The “crouching tiger” is the solitary boy of the litter. I nicknamed him “Biggie Smalls” because he is the biggest of the “smalls”. His more defiant companion (who Jay has nicknamed “Smudgy”) appears to be the leader of this crew, as you will see.
These two are much more shy. Especially the one on the left. The one on the right is the runt of the litter. Given she is little…
VERY LITTLE and hails from Bed-Stuy I nicknamed her L’il Kim. Not that these kittens have names per se: they don’t. But more about that later. Here’s Jay telling us how these Bed-Stuy beauties came to be (albeit temporarily) Greenpointers.
Then Jay left me alone to get acquainted with them. We started with an ice breaker I like to call “watch the hand”.
Then we upgraded to a cat toy.
Then we had a little lunch.
But back to the purpose of this post: these kittens do not have names! For this reason Jay and I decided a contest is in order. Do you have names for this winsome quartet of cuties? If so, please tender them via comments or email at: missheather (at) thatgreenpointblog (dot) com. Otherwise, you can see more pix and videos of these cuties by clicking here.
In closing, here a little something for the dog lovers out there. The above lovely lass, Abby, was recently found wandering around Jackie Robinson Parkway in Queens. Luckily a good Samaritan picked her up. And by the previous I mean lucky for her and us: she’s a sweet gentle thing!
As I have (often) written before: anyone who is interested in providing a loving home to any of these lovely (and loving) furkids should contact Dog Habitat via telephone at (347) 601-8678 or via email at: rescue (at) doghabitat (dot) org. Tell ’em I sent you.
Thanks!

I found this on the floor at a train station somewhere in Manhattan. I took it home, it is now taped to my wall.
I want to take a moment to thank Melissa for forwarding me this choice item. It made my day!

An Art Space Coming To Manhattan Avenue?
Filed under: 11211, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Many of you probably know that Head Hoods has taken residence in this building (which is located at the corner of Bayard Street). What you might not know is the space next door is slated to become a working artist’s space replete with shows and all that fun stuff. Per the very nice gentleman* who operates this space, Kent, this is going to happen. Soon. He told me to watch for the banner he is going to place next to the front door. I mostly assuredly will!
New Art Space At 4237 Manhattan Avenue
Opening Date: T.B.A.

And that’s all she wrote… for now!

*He even asked if I would care to take home the above photograph of the birds as he “didn’t like it very much” and planned to rotate images anyway. Since I had several hours of walking ahead of me I declined. It was a very gracious offer nonetheless!

Spotted On McGuinness Boulevard: Bklyn Hydro Garden
When I spied this on McGuinness Boulevard it gave me pause. Could this be the beginning of the greening of McGuinness Boulevard? If the wares inside are indication, I’d say it is a distinct possibility. I didn’t have time to check this place out (was headed to lunch). I will do so when the time affords itself. In addition, my green thumb (if one can call it that) is limited solely to jade plants. I see no reason to inflict my incompetence on innocent plant life. Those of you who are more horticulturally adept, however, might want to give this new establishment a whirl. It looks really neat!

When I ran a Google search for 316 McGuinness this came up. Most intriguing.
To be continued?
