Greenpoint Photo du Jour: Anyone Lose Some Slacks?
If, they’re at the intersection of Engert Avenue and Humboldt Street. Go get ’em!

LAST GASP: Newtown Creek Oil Watch

The Seine of north Brooklyn was particularly repulsive today. And Laura Hofmann and Christine Holowicz (who shot the above video footage) tendered the bad news to the DEC hotline. Laura has assured me that she has never before received the rude treatment she got today by the operator. The first (and last time) I called the DEP I faced an inquisition.
How do you know it is oil?
I was asked, among similar crass questions. I grew up with gearheads. In my car-owning days I never once had to pay for an oil change— a six pack of beer sufficed. I live in Greenpoint. I know petroleum when I see (or smell) it.
Regardless of what this is, it is GROSS.

P.S.: On that note, here’s more reading about the Newtown Creek Experience from north Brooklyn’s very own Aaron Short.
New York Shitty Day Ender: Guess Who?
Filed under: 11211, Bloomblight, Street Art, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Winning by 5 percentage points does not a mandate make, Mike. If my memory serves me correctly, you lost the borough of Kings— which is where the above sullen missive (and numerous others) can be found. Appropriately enough, it is on a rotting fence gracing a derelict construction site slated to be a high rise: Bloomblight.
May your four years as a lame duck (and a highly unpopular one at that) be interesting ones. I hope it was worth it. I look forward to documenting them. Your purported “achievements” are a gold crown in a mouthful of decaying teeth. I should know; I live in one of the abscesses.

East Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Rattus Norvegicus
I imagine this is a hold-over from Halloween— or is it? One never knows in north Brooklyn. In any case this not-so-small furry fella (which I like to call a Williamspoint Retriever) from Humboldt Street made my day.

Reader Contribution du Jour: Presenting The Glorious G Train Series
Filed under: 11237, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, Crosstown Local, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Williamsburg, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Dale (who forwarded me the above photograph, which I have taken the liberty to crop and is located at the Myrtle-Willoughby stop of the Crosstown Local) writes:
Have you seen these?
No, I haven’t. I usually walk everywhere because I don’t want to deal with the G train. But if the wait has been whittled down to a mere ten minutes I might rethink this!

Greenpoint Photo du Jour: No Parking
Since today’s offerings (for some inexplicable reason) seem to mostly revolve around minding one’s p’s and q’s I submit the following (which hails from Diamond Street) for your approval.
The sign gracing this two-wheeled totem indicates there is to be no parking on this side of the street Monday and Thursday mornings (for street cleaning). Today is Tuesday. It would appear that New York’s Strongest used a little ingenuity and some good ol’ elbow grease to work around this wayward bike.
