Post Blizzard Wrap-up Part I: Best. Snowman. Ever.
This weekend I met up with my buddy Norman over at Atlantic Yards Report and had pizza at Motorino.* After we discussed the latest book I am reading (In The Country Of Brooklyn by Peter Golenbock) I told him I could hardly wait for it to snow so I could scout for snowmen. Of all the neighborhoods in all of Brooklyn no one makes a snowman like we Greenpointers do.
Well, today I finally got around to doing my scouting. The pickings were pretty slim but we must not confuse quantity with quality. I was (and am) not the least bit disappointed.
MILTON STREET
This finely fettled little fella from brought a smile to my face.
MCCARREN PARK
Of course there is no hard and fast rule stating one can only build “people” out of snow.
Someone in the Garden Spot of the Universe understood this and elected to make this item which I call “The McCarren Park Snow Mound”. I do not want to suggest that all snowmen need be pedestrian. A little ingenuity (an empty garbage can and a pair of work gloves) can reap delightful results. Case in point:
LEONARD STREET
(priceless)

P.S.: I will be posting more photographs from my jaunt around Greenpoint in a bit so stay tuned. I have some pretty nifty stuff up my sleeve!
East Williamsburg Photos Du Jour: The Blue Stove Cafe
Filed under: Williamsburg
These delectable edibles come courtesy of a new place on Graham Avenue.
It is called the Blue Stove Cafe…
and as you can see they have a vast assortment of cavity-inducing goodness for the picking.
But don’t make the mistake (I made) of asking for a menu: they don’t have one. Whatever they deem fresh enough to prep on any given day dictates the fare.

When the opportunity arises do check this place out. The rich aroma of baked good that permeates this establishment alone will make you gain fifteen pounds! Yummy.

The Mister and I do not make it to Long Island City as much as we used to. There are a number of reasons for this. Among them:
- The weather. It’s been too cold to venture out.
- We have taken to going to Sunnyside and Jackson Heights instead. This is because…
- quite frankly we find Long Island City kind of depressing.
Ever since they demolished that beautiful old building at 10-62 Jackson Avenue and replaced it with a shiv-like structure we cannot cross the Pulaski Bridge without wincing. Luckily we had a craving for Italian food this weekend and decided to go to Manettas. As we made our way down the bridge we were presented with a most unexpected treat: 49-16 11 Street.
This stunning example of Strip Mall Italian (replete with a Donald Judd-esque elevator shaft) sent us into fits of uncontrollable laughter.
Where do you start with this? Hell, where do you finish for that matter?
For starters you have the lovely Juliet style balconies overlooking the on ramp of the Pulaski Bridge.
Just a beer bottle’s throw away from traffic (and perhaps the odd pedestrian or bicyclist).
Some attempt at symmetry has been made… but not quite enough. I christen this daring new style Art Sucko.
But no expense has been spared on Friedrichs boxes. This is a good thing. When the dull roar of truck traffic (at all hours) gets to be too much for our intrepid 49-16ers they can crank up the air conditioner to drown out the din.
The last time I saw something with this many studs on it was in the West Village. (WARNING: previous link is NSFW.)
No matter how hard I try my wit, gift for gab, whatever-you-want-to-call-it is not doing this stellar example of Fedderism justice. To this end I need your help. Although I realize this has been done before I am proposing the following: you, dear readers, tender LOL speak captions for this masterpiece. These can be left in the comments below or sent via email at: missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com.
If I like what I see I’ll publish the pick of the litter right here on New York Shitty later this week.
Your immediate attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
Happy snarking!

From The New York Shitty Photo Pool: L.A. Deli

I have to admit that I am still get wistful when I walk by the “L.A. Deli”. As far as bodegas go I suppose it is okay— but sometimes I’s still prefer to have my old L.A. Ristorante back. Especially their potato croquettes (which were absolutely wonderful). But I am aware that the only thing one can count on in life to be constant is change— and had L.A. Deli not come into being we would not have this wonderful photograph taken by Caryn Rose to enjoy today. Great shot!

I have drafted an email to myself. This missive is set to arrive in my inbox August 2nd and will contain a link to this post. Why, you ask? Very simple: in five short months it will be hot and sticky as hell. It is also very likely my fair burgh (courtesy of our local waste treatment plant) will smell like a homeless person’s ass. I am simply endeavoring to remind myself that it can always be worse. Yikes!

Greenpoint Back In The Day: Key Food
Like a number of lucky people I am whiling away my afternoon in the warm confines of Chez Shitty. To keep myself busy I have been reviewing my stash of snaps of Greenpoint from back in the day and decided to share the above juxtaposition of the intersection of Greenpoint Avenue and McGuinness Boulevard. The top photograph dates from the 1980’s 1970’s. The lower shot was taken yesterday afternoon by yours truly. I think we can all agree that although The Garden Spot of the Universe has experienced a number of changes over the years (many of which have not been very poisitve), the last thirty odd years have been very, very kind to McGuinness Boulevard. You’re only getting better with age Mickey G, here’s looking at you, kid!

An East Williamsburg Public Service Announcement
Filed under: Williamsburg
Yesterday I was busy doing what I imagine a number of my fellow New Yorkers were actively in engaged in doing: purchasing groceries and essentials before the big snowstorm hit. One stop on my itinerary was the Gem Super Value Store on Grand Street to purchase some boxer shorts.
Upon entering I noticed a most curious sign in this day and age of recession.A missive of “we are not going out of business” variety. Wanting to know what required its creation I took the matter up with the cashier. She was more than happy to give me the scoop.
Apparently their establishment’s decision to do some remodelling has been a source of confusion to the community. A number of customers have approached the staff concerned that the store— a loved place to purchase housewares— was going to close. In addition a number of real estate agents have made inquiries for their own nefarious purpose: drumming up a little business. So it was decided a sign was in order to clear up any confusion as to what is going on at 695 Grand Street.
The Gem Store at 695 Grand Street is not— REPEAT— NOT going out of business. East Williamburgers your beloved housewares connection is safe and sound. What’s more, they are doing quite well. And as for all you real estate agents who have been pestering the staff: there’s plenty of recession-induced misery to go around. Just not here. Enough already.
