TOMORROW: Public Information Session Regarding Newtown Creek Superfund
Filed under: 11101, 11206, 11222, East Williamsburg, East Williamsburg Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Newtown Creek, Queens
Tomorrow, December 8, starting at 6:00 p.m. at our very own Automotive High School the Mayor’s office will be conducting a public information meeting regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to designate Newtown Creek as a superfund site. Among the items on the agenda for this public forum are a presentation and “question and answer” session.
Having been to such gatherings before, I prognosticate that one or two agitators/community cranks will show up, shout irrelevant/impertinent gibberish and generally annoy the piss out everyone else in attendance. I have seen this happen before and I see no reason why it will not happen this time around. Suffice it to say, dear readers, you can probably anticipate an evening that is both informative and entertaining.

From The New York Shitty Inbox: WTF On West Street
Jay Lombard (who took the above photographs) writes:
Unidentified slimy substance on west St btw eagle and Freeman! Look like fish eggs from a giant newtown creek carp. And that plastic thing in the middle is a salad fork in case you were wondering. Check it out and see if you can figure out what it is.
This afternoon I went headed to West Street to see this phenomenon in person. Sure enough, after a little field-testing they proved to be very gelatinous.
If I had to hazard a guess as to that these things are I’d say they are bath beads. I for one like how someone was even kind enough to leave a spoon so passersby can scoop some up, take them home (or for the more adventurous: the East River or Newtown Creek) and enjoy a nice winter time bath on this dreary day. That’s what I call holiday cheer…
Greenpoint style!

Tis The Season: 97 Russell Street
Yesterday I hit you with some holiday spirit courtesy of 648 Humboldt Street.
Today I present for your enjoyment some yuletide greetings from their neighbors (and friendly competition around the corner) at 97 Russell Street!
WELCOME
Joy to you courtesy of Walt Disney.
North Pole here we come!
And last— but hardly least— a trio of snowmen* and a gift-giving bear.

*With no snow! Inasmuch as I hate to say it, this snow-less season is irking me. It is a tradition at Chez Shitty to watch The Shining during the first blizzard of the season. Mind you, while raiding the liquor cabinet— this provides the ambiance!
THIS WEEK: Holiday Market at Clayspace & More!
Filed under: 11101, 11222, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City
I went to this event last year. I was not in the least bit disappointed! It was a most enjoyable evening. For this reason I strongly recommend— even if you cannot afford their wares (which are absolutely stunning)— that you go! You’ll meet some of the most talented (and downright nice) crafters and kiln cats in the Garden Spot!

To close on a related note my photography show at t.b.d. is bravely marching forward. Last night I finalized my selections, burned ’em onto cds and today I will get them developed. Truth be told, it was damned difficult to pick and choose among the several thousand photographs I have taken over the years. It was downright frustrating. In any case, I think Greenpointers, Williamsburgers, and East ‘Burgers in particular will enjoy what I picked. These works will be for sale, priced to delight and move at $25.00 and up; and if all goes to plan a portion of the proceeds will go towards some of my favorite causes:
- Empty Cages Collective
- North Brooklyn Cats (which is involved in a very ambitious animal rescue project in Long Island City. You can anticipate a post about this in the future!)
- Dog Habitat
- The McCarren Dog Run
My Neighborhood (my working title for the show, the final one is t.b.d.)
“Soft opening”: Thursday, December 10, 2009 (exact time t.b.d.)
Closing reception: (t.b.d.)
Venue: t.b.d. (Really, that’s the name of the place!)
224 Franklin Street

When the deets become firm I will post more details.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Free Coffee This Week at Sweetleaf!
This item comes courtesy of Greenpoint’s very own commuting queen and coffee aficionado, Bitchcakes. She writes:
I spotted this flyer last night when waiting for the B61 @ Jackson Ave: FREE COFFEE @ Sweetleaf next week! They serve Stumptown, which is my favorite coffee and I highly recommend it. Thought you might want to pass it along. If you don’t, that’s fine too. But I know I will be there!!
I am certain many of you, dear readers, would love to get a free fix of quality caffeinated products. If so, your golden parachute has arrived courtesy of our friends across the creek at Sweetleaf. Don’t let the bikes run you over as you cross the Pulaski!

Found On Norman Avenue: Cat
Filed under: 11222, Crazy Cat Lady, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
As you can see this flier (which I found today on Norman Avenue) gives no identifying information about this lovely feline whatsoever. Nonetheless if this furkid looks familiar to you— or if you know who he (or she) might belong to— please give his (her) rescuer(s) a call at the above telephone number. Thanks!

Greenpoint Gentrification Watch: Oxygen For Sale!
Filed under: 11222, Culture War, Greenpoint, Greenpoint Brooklyn, Greenpoint Magic
Laura (who sent me this hilarious item which hails from the Duane Reade at 893 Manhattan Avenue) writes in an email entitled “It was only a matter of time”:
I always knew that oxygen would be sold in Greenpoint one day. Maybe Duane Reed will be selling gas masks next?
I myself would prefer an over-the-counter Shit Tit Kit. But to each their own…
