Greenpoint’s Newest Hostel!
Anonymous writes:
Hi Heather
My Dad and his partner live around the corner from me. on Clay St, a few doors down from 66 Clay St (the former methadone clinic) which somehow overnight has turned into a $20 a night hostel .
Dad tells me that in the past week, there has been anywhere from 10-20; what appear to be teenagers milling around the front of the building and on a picnic bench in the parking lot, smoking cigarettes, drinking beer, playing techno music dancing, having a general good time. Which no one should have a problem with, except the party doesn’t start until after 1AM and goes until sunrise
I’m going to try and spend a nice relaxing evening at Dad’s tonight in a bit of a stakeout to see if his complaints are valid
Ill keep you posted
What/if anything do you know about Marzili Hostel at 66 Clay St???
Hope you’re feeling better.
I’m operating at 90%, Anonymous (I’ll spare you the details about the other ten). Let’s start with what you have given me.
A web site purporting the “Marzilli” Hostel. (Click on the above image to enjoy the true hilarity).
Here’s the only Certificate of Occupancy on file. A residence for the mentally ill (a nice way of saying it was a methadone clinic). Which was , most assuredly, what it was.
Here’s what I saw today.
Some dude hanging out under a tent.
As to who owns this property. That’s where it gets fun! Per ACRIS:
The log-tossing goes on and on. My money is on Max Stark.
The person who gave the Garden Spot the gift that keeps on giving: the Greenpoint Hotel— a flophouse pretending to be a bed and breakfast. (Click on the previous link, it’s a pisser!)
The person who gives us 239 Banker Street: a hotel being utilized as luxury apartments, e.g.; The Sweater Lofts. STOP WORK ORDERS BE DAMNED! Since when have, and I quote:
New kitchens and bathrooms
Stainless steel appliances
HUGE awesome roof with views
MANY LAYOUTS TO CHOOSE FROM!
the previous amenities had anything to do with a “hotel”?
Your eyes are not deceiving you: this property has 46 “DOB” violations, 36 open, 42 “ECB” violations 34 of which are still open and a STOP WORK ORDER. Unpaid penalties and non-compliance. And yet they advertise.
Why not call the person responsible for this advertisement, Liz, and ask her? It’s pretty clear the Department of Buildings is unwilling or unable to do anything.

Today at long last I checked out Rooftop Farms* on Eagle Street. Truth be told I had no idea what I was in for: it was nothing short of unbelievable. Per their web site the folks at Rooftop Farms purport to have a 6000 square foot organic vegetable farm. Speaking as someone who lives in (maybe) 425 square feet of living space this is incomprehensible. After seeing it in person it still is. Follow are some photographs I took so you too can share in the joy of seeing some much-needed “green” being put back in Greenpoint. Enjoy!
Ben Flanner and Annie Novak, co-founders of this farm are lovely people. They answered my questions (which undoubtedly were the same questions they have been asked all weekend) courteously and cheerfully. Anyone interested in volunteering should consult their volunteering page. Otherwise you can support their efforts by purchasing their produce (I bought two bunches of cilantro— had I not been in a hurry I also would have picked up some lettuce as it looked delicious) and signing up for their email list.

*Special thanks goes out to Flatbush Gardener for reminding me to follow-up on this. Thanks! Now that the G is running to Church Avenue you’ll have to come up and see me sometime. 😉

Reader Contribution Du Jour: Scenes From Williamsburg Walks
I’ll be perfectly honest: although I like the principle underlying Williamsburg Walks the reality is another matter altogether. I learned this the first and only time I went (last year). Too many people (and overflowing garbagecans ) for my taste. However, New York Shitty reader and frequent contributor Tony braved Bedford Avenue and sent me a number of wonderful photographs from yesterday’s festivities. The following are but only a fraction of them. Enjoy!
Great captures, Tony!

New York Shitty Day Ender: Shots From The Red Shed Garden
As the (relative) dearth of postage today probably indicates, I spent the day away from the keyboard and out enjoying this unseasonably delightful weather. Among the numerous things on my itinerary was the Red Shed Garden fundraiser and barbecue. When the Mister and I arrived the event was in full swing. While he was getting his fill of sausage from Emily’s Pork Store I took a little tour of the premises. If it is possible I’d say they have really topped themselves this year; it was lush and teeming with all manner and variety of tasty foodstuffs (and Brussels sprouts). But don’t take my word for it— see for yourself!
Any of you who are interested to learn how you can become a part of this bona fide urban oasis click here and you will be directed to the Red Shed Garden’s Yahoo group.

I’m not too sure what kind of merchandise/services the “Holy Ghost Rebel Corporation” offers but I’m happy to see they recycle! A LOT.

New York Shitty Day Ender: Red Shed Barbecue & Fundraiser Tomorrow!
I have learned via the Community Board 1 Yahoo group that the Red Shed Garden— arguably one of the most breathtaking community gardens in Williamspoint— will be having a barbecue and fundraiser tomorrow, July 11, starting at 1:00 p.m. Per their web site here’s a few of the delights which will await you:
…burgers from Lorimer Market, sausages from Emily’s Pork Store and raffle prizes from Sel de Mer (dinner for two, anyone?), Brooklyn Kitchen , Treehouse , Brooklynski , Abhyasa Yoga Center and Stencil 1.
Those of you who are looking for something inexpensive to do tomorrow (that benefits a really good cause, I will add) really should swing by and check this event out. What these people have done with this site (which formerly housed a gas station) is absolutely amazing. Follows is a slide show of some photographs I took a year ago to give you a better idea of what I am talking about. Enjoy!
