From The New York Shitty Inbox: Red Dawn

It would appear that Staten Island Chuck’s bit(e) of direct action earlier this week has spawned its own clothing line. It is called Viva Chuck, it can be found on Cafepress and I learned of it courtesy of a woman who calls herself Lillet Langtry.*

I like the Che angle but for the sake of Dialectical Materialism I have to confess: I wish his little paw was upraised and brandishing an AK-47. This would appeal more to my petit bourgeois capitalist— soon-to-be Lumpenproletariat— sensibilities. In any case there’s at least one red in Staten Island. Who knew?

Then again it was once written that four legs are indeed better than two. But of course sporting a sharp set of choppers doesn’t hurt!

…No question now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

Williamsburg Gentrification Watch: It’s Over

Inasmuch as I try to keep out of the is or is not Williamsburg “cool” anymore debate (I do not live there and I am not now nor will I ever be “cool”. I gave up on that a LONG time ago.) I would like to offer my friends to the south this food for thought.

When the guard stationed in a glorified port-o-let at a luxury condominium development on North 3rd Street is a fan of Vice Magazine (the periodical everyone loves to hate— but reads anyway) it might be time to consider moving to Flushing.

That is all.

DISCLAIMER: This is satire. The proprietress of this blog does indeed read Vice on occasion. What’s more, she enjoys it.

Junk Has Arrived In Greenpoint

No, I’m not talking about that kind of junk (it made its resurgence in my fair nabe known some time ago).

junkinteriornys

Rather, Junk, the thrift store located at Driggs Avenue and North 10th Street has opened a new space down on Franklin Street! I spoke with a gentleman working there and he said they officially opened last week and still had a great deal of merchandise to roll out. As of my visit today they had a great deal of affordable furniture for the choosing. This is a good thing given the dearth of furniture options here (no disrespect to Greenpoint Furniture intended). I wish these chaps the best of luck!

If you’re looking for “the best” look no further: I have found him. Sort of.

His name is “Sam” and I’m guessing he either lives or works near this stop of the B60 bus. There is no indication whatsoever of what Sam is “the best” at (I’ll leave that to your imagination), but whatever it is he must be pretty damned good: his praises are not written on this piece of public property once, but twice.

Is this is a bus driver romance in the making? I certainly hope so. MTA employees need lovin’ too!

THIS WEEK: All That Glitters…

In keeping with this upcoming weekend’s laundry list of events artistic, this item comes courtesy of Chris Smith, proprietor of Subtexture and partipant in this show. McCaig-Welles Gallery will be hosting an opening reception for its latest group show, All That Glitters Is Gold, this Saturday, February 7, from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. Here’s the 411 McCaig-Welles’s press release:

McCaig Welles Gallery is pleased to announce All that Glitters is Gold, a group exhibition presented by Melissa McCaig-Welles and guest curator Cope2. The exhibition invites never-before-exhibited artists along with represented artists with upcoming solo shows at the gallery to interpret the expansive theme of the show in a restrained 18×24 art piece.

Gallery owner Melissa McCaig-Welles, intrigued by the somber economic and political climate, was interested in the potential for varying responses and overlapping interpretations to the All that Glitters is Gold title.

The title, for me personally, directly corresponds with the current economic climate and the disaster on Wall Street. The fact that we all believed the hype and gave our money away to untrustworthy people, bought more homes than we could afford and basically relied on all that glittered…… ” states McCaig-Welles.The show title invites artists to focus on what blinds human nature and perhaps, and hopefully, what redeems it.

Will these talented artists express the blinding folly of fool’s gold or visually reflect on the authentic? Shakespeare’s take on the axiom in his The Merchant of Venice forewarns a chilling denouement from which McCaig Welles and Cope2 hope to spare us next time.

A carrion Death, within whose empty eye
There is a written scroll! I’ll read the writing.
All that glitters is not gold;
Often have you heard that told:
Many a man his life hath sold
But my outside to behold:
Gilded tombs do worms enfold.

— Williams Shakespeare, The Merchant of Venice

Um, okay. In any case this show has a rather extensive list of participants including CRIME 79, Can2, Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez, Chris Smith aka Subtexture, Cope2, Damion Silver, EWOK5MH, Greg Haberny, Indie184, Jen Props, Lance Turnbow, LogikOne, Lucas Irwin aka FILTH, Mona Superhero, Queen Andrea, R Nicholas Kuszyk, Robert H. Syrett, Ryan Bubnis, Ryder E. Robison, Sam Friedman, Scott Patt, Scott Peehl, Sien, jonny fenix and one of yours truly’s personal faves: Molly Crabapple. Of Sex & The Southside

As many of you are well aware Valentines Day is headed our direction. Ready or not the day is coming when we have to show our affection to our significant others. In the interest of fostering connubial bliss (or just plain unmitigated lust) in north Brooklyn I share with you today some musings from the Southside. Follow them at your own risk.
