NEXT WEEK: Transmitter Park Meeting

April 10, 2008 ·

Next week, April 14, GWAPP will be hosting the first meeting regarding Transmitter Park. For those of you who are not in the know, this is the park slated to grace the western terminus of Greenpoint Avenue and several million dollars has reputedly been earmarked towards its creation. The purpose of this gathering is to give “interested community residents” to an opportunity to “discuss the park’s design, construction and timetable, and create a park ‘friends’ group for this new soon-to-be jewel on the waterfront”.

I strongly recommend that any and all who have the time attend this meeting. I have do doubt it will be very interesting and am personally very curious to see an up-to-date rendering of what this park will look like.

Transmitter Park Meeting
April 14, 2008, 7:00 p.m.
Red Star Bar
37 Greenpoint Ave (between Franklin & West Street)
Brooklyn, New York 11222

To RSVP, please shoot GWAPP an email at info (at) gwapp (dot) org.

See you there!

Bed Stuy Photos du Jour: Relax

April 9, 2008 ·

I discovered the above tableau on Herkimer Street yesterday afternoon. On top of being a colossal eyesore (and a rather nifty playground for the local feral felines), I have little doubt this is also a serious fire hazard.

But why should I worry? As the sticker on the front door clearly reads, I should relax. God is in tha house!

Come to think of it, it looks more like he invoked his wrath on this house instead.

The Parks Department Has Gone To The Dogs

Literally.

I made the acquaintance of Yogi, the Parks Department’s smallest— and perhaps most handsome— employee on India Street recently. He was busy overseeing some tree planting, but was nice enough to let me take a nice head shot.

Who could argue with a face like this? PLANT MORE TREES!

143 Huron Blooms!

April 9, 2008 ·

I’m not too sure what “look” this architect was trying achieve. If I had to take a guess I’d say Imperial Storm Trooper meets Jawa Sandcrawler with a dash of Mondrian thrown in for good measure.

As you can see 143 Huron fits in seamlessly with its neighbors: a three story house with chartreuse aluminum siding and a Neoclassical bath house dating from 1903.

I suppose that’s why I listened to the workers at 143 Huron hammer away until 8:30 last night. I could call 311, but that would only be, well…

Seemless.

P.S.: I love it when the workers from this site hang out in front of Bagel On The Run and throw bottles onto the street just (as Johnny Cash would say) to watch them die.

Meet Green Tree

The last time I walked by this store they were installing the bay window. It would appear that Green Tree (which purports to help you be green without becoming “granola”) is open for business in Greenpoint, the Garden Spot of the Universe!

I can safely state this is the only place I have seen Barack Obama’s portrait on a tee shirt in Greenpoint. Sure, I have seen a flier here and there touting his candidacy but…

BARCmates: Justina And Provenzana

April 9, 2008 ·
Filed under: Crazy Cat Lady, Williamsburg

Meet Miss Justina.

This lovely (and very petite) 1 1/2 year old tabby has a lot of attitude— and sweetness. I learned this while interviewing her.

Miss Heather: What’s your name?
Justina: Can’t you read the godd*mned card on my cage?
Miss Heather: Justina, right?
Justina: Call me what you want, I want outta of this dump. No offense to the nice people at BARC— they’ve been really good to me— but this is not the lifestyle I would like to become accustomed to. I have needs.
Miss Heather: A forever home with people who will love and respect you?
Justina: Yes, exactly. Will you please rub my head now? (I did.)

Then I checked in on Justina’s neighbor, Provenzana.

Justina didn’t take too well to relinquishing the spotlight to Provenzana.

In fact, she took a couple of swipes Provenzana’s direction, but one glance from Provenzana was all it took to make Justina settle down.

Miss Heather: So what’s up with you?
Provenzana: I care not to talk about my personal affairs. I live at BARC under the feline witness protection program.
Miss Heather: Racketeering?
Provenzana: No, mouseketeering. Tony Pro sent me to shake down some particularly vexatious mice in Union City and I didn’t find my way home.
Miss Heather: That’s why you ended up in Williamsburg?
Provenzana: Yeah, more or less. I ain’t saying anything more without an attorney present.

In all seriousness, Justina and Provenzana are two (of the many) very cool cats needing homes at BARC. If you want sweet Provenzana is the best. If you’re looking for spicy, check out Justina.

Ugliest. Building. Ever.

April 8, 2008 ·

As a resident of north Brooklyn I have seen my fair share (and then some) of ugly buildings. When scouting for crapitecture to showcase on Fedders Friday I often find myself saying:

That sure is ugly. But is it ugly enough?

Today, dear readers, I found an edifice so utterly hideous I was speechless. It hails from the intersection of Fulton Street and Classon Avenue on the border between Bedford Stuyvesant and Clinton Hill. Strap on your barf bags kids, here it comes!

The first thing that struck me about this building (actually, it’s two buildings but they’re conjoined so I am treating them as one) is its apparent lack of any aesthetic sense or “plan”.

Here’s a shot of the building to the left. This architect decided to go eclectic— and by “eclectic” I mean throwing a bunch of random stuff together.

A bunch of very ugly random stuff.

What would a masterpiece of this caliber be if it was besmirched by greenery?

No worries, they’ve got it covered.

With cement.

Interesting Development Of The Day

As I was knocking around the Atlantic Yards site this morning I made a very interesting discovery.

Bruce Ratner et. al got a brand-spanking new Stop Work Order.

Just in time for spring!
