I read today that that awesome piece of Brooklyn is getting shut down and paved over soon in the re-design of Coney Island. What a sad story indeed.
Just another step towards homogenizing/”malling” the crap out of this borough. Depressing indeed!
They are also closing Beer Island, my Coney mainstay, as well as Ruby’s which has been there 70 years. SEVENTY YEARS. It boggles the mind, it truly does, because they want to replace these businesses with “upscale” eateries. The 5 boroughs have plenty of “upscale” eateries, especially Brooklyn right after Manhattan. The pure charm of Coney is beach bars/eateries! Grill House fries, Beer Island beer where it was difficult to find one chair that didn’t have a busted leg, etc. I am so heartbroken about this and not just for me…for my many friends who were born and raised in the area who are understandably very upset.
Ruby’s has been open for 75 years and is slated to become a sports bar that will be open 365 days a year. Blech.
Agreed with my friend d: who the hell needs upscale eateries on Coney Island? i don’t go there for the upscale eateries. it is a hotdog or fried dough or chicken fingers with wimpy plastic forks. that’s boardwalk food.
