Williamsburg Phone(s) du Jour: Hanging On The Telephone

April 28, 2008 ·

I’m in the phone booth, it’s the one across the hall
If you don’t answer, I’ll just ring it off the wall

I know he’s there, but I just had to call
Don’t leave me hanging on the telephone

Vollies Wanted: Bed Bug Workshop

April 26, 2008 ·
Filed under: Bushwick, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Williamsburg

Here’s a taste of New York Shitty’s Kafkaesque bureaucracy for you: HPD agrees to raise awareness about bed bugs in Greenpoint March 6, 2008. The Greenpoint Reformed Church is the venue, the date is set: May 6, 2008. The city provides the above dorky (and copy-edited by yours truly because it had typos) flier. In English.

Problem: Not everyone in Greenpoint speaks English.

We have Spanish fliers, we have English fliers. What we don’t have are Polish fliers. Apparently the city needs 60 days to turn around that kind of thing. Do the math. This puts my buddy Ann (at the Greenpoint Reformed Church) in a position. The purpose of this post is two-fold:

  1. We need people to distribute fliers in Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Long Island City.
  2. We need someone to transcribe (READ: do data entry) this flier into Polish. The city (in its intransigence) won’t do it, so we will!

Greenpoint:3, Philosophy Works: 0

April 25, 2008 ·

God am I happy this week is almost over. I think I spent more time on the subway this week than I usually do in a month.

Thankfully I was provided ample entertainment in the way of the Crosstown Local ridership’s latest skirmish in the ongoing war for hearts and minds against Philosophy Works.

What’s more, I also learned our friends on the Manhattan-bound L train have joined the fray.

Hard Hat Hannah Struts Her Stuff

April 24, 2008 ·

Ever since she learned about Ms. Lancaster’s resignation, Hard Hat Hannah has been on my case.

Hannah: I want to see some of these work sites. I’ve been through rehab. I’m OK.
Miss H: Are you sure you can take it?
Hannah: BRING IT ON!

So I took her to Orient Avenue.

First up, 59:

Hannah: This house gives me the creeps.
Miss H:
I’ve got your back. Let’s go in!

I detect some vandalism on this fence.

She said. To wit I asked:

What does it say?

OOH A SECRET!

NO WAY!

Yes way

Hannah then proclaimed:

This property is no secret. Per the Department of Buildings it is to be bricked up and fenced off. What’s more, I find this…

shoddy fence most disturbing. Anyone and their dog can get in here!

Miss H: It would appear someone already has.

Hannah: Dammit!

Miss H: Let’s head down the street to 11 Orient, it’s a total shit hole.

Wow, this fence wasn’t here the last time I walked by. I wonder what happened?

Hannah: They got hit with two Stop Work Orders, that’s what!

Miss H: You go, Hannah!

Hannah:

The inspector who filled out this form made two egregious errors:

  1. Naming Marie Russo as the owner and
  2. MGM Demo as the contractor

I have seen this shit time and time again. The real author behind this disaster is none other than Marie Grasso and MMG Design!

What else can I say? Miss Hannah may be small, but she’s one damned good sleuth! What’s more, only a raging village of idiots could secure a demolition permit 4/16/08 only to get slapped with a Stop Work Order six days later.

Way to go, Grasso!

Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Broadway

April 22, 2008 ·

One of the reason I carry my camera with me everywhere I go is I never know when I’ll see something interesting. This is what I love about New York City: there is much treasure waiting to be (re?)discovered.

Case in point: this old Subway Sun advertisement at the Broadway stop of the G train.

Ironically enough, this sign could use a little cleaning up too! Here’s a little background information about the Subway Sun from the MTA’s web site:

As New York’s first subway entered its second decade of operation, it faced many new problems, including competition from a rival system, the BMT. In 1916, to meet these challenges, the IRT hired Ivy Lee, one of the leading public relations specialists in the country, to handle its account. Under Ivy Lee’s direction, the IRT took an innovative approach – to communicate directly with its passengers, through pamphlets, brochures, and special poster series. Lee created The Subway Sun and The Elevated Express which fast became New York City institutions, depicting New York City life in the 1920s and 30s…

The MTA also has a nifty online “Gallery Talk” entitled The World’s Safest Railroad which discusses these advertisements. Check it out! (CAVEAT: it is pretty long.)
