Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Giglio Festival
Filed under: Williamsburg
The Giglio Festival is a rite of passage for neophyte New Yorkers. Like the Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building, you see it once out of a sense of personal responsibility and that is enough. When Mr. Heather moved in with me back in 2003 we went to check it out. His curiosity was satiated and we have not gone back since.
The previous having been said, Will Nunziata (of Collars Up Films) was present at this year’s festivities and forwarded me this hilarious photograph.
He wrote:
I took this at the Giglio fest in Williamsburg on Sunday. I still can’t stop laughing. Notice the graffiti. Perfect.
I agree.

Brooklyn Born & Bred: The Stooges
It’s July. It is hot and humid. Nothing is going on and yet we have to work. For the previous reasons I decided it would be nice to kick off this Wednesday with a little light entertainment.
Lisa (of Empty Cages Collective) could not for the life of her name these three kittens. After observing them pommeling each other and generally spazzing out it became obvious to me: Lenny, Moe and Curly. The Three Stooges. After some discussion Lisa and I decided Shemp was out— which is a shame because he is and will always be my favorite stooge*. In any case, here they are in action.
Anyone interested in adopting these fellas should contact Empty Cages Collective at emptycagescollective (at) gmail (dot) com.
Life was much more civilized back then. Make pies, not war!
Miss Heather
*Moe and Shemp were born in Bensonhurst. Curly at Bath Beach!
The Daily Destruct-O-Matic
The one thing that fascinates me about living in Greenpoint nowadays is the sheer amount of demolition work being conducted. Seriously. One week I will walk by a two or three floor walk-up and the next, *poof*, it is gone! Wishing to document this mind-boggling array of destruction in and around the Garden Spot of the Universe I have created a new feature: The Daily Destruct-O-Matic*. Here is today’s inaugural site of interest: 59 Orient Avenue.
On March 2, 2007 (in a post entitled House of the Day: Endangered on Orient Avenue) Brownstoner wrote :
Barring the intervention of a very well-heeled hipster trustafarian, another unlandmarked gem in Greenpoint may be headed for the execution chamber. Its crime? Sitting on a 60-by-100-foot lot in a neighborhood that has been complacent about protecting its architectural heritage. (This block was known as Doctors’ Row in the middle of the 20th Century.) The Victorian-era shingled house is on the chopping block for $2.5 million, more than it would likely fetch were it not for the 13,200 square feet of buildable space that accompanies a 6,000-square-foot lot in an R6 neighborhood. As the listing points out, the addition of a community facility could mean an even larger building. What a shame. Maybe some creative entrepreneur could make this work as a bed and breakfast or how about a Soho House East?
As you can see in the above photographs the grim reaper has commenced doing his dark business at 59 Orient Avenue. I find this curious given the only permit on file is for (and I quote):
ALTERATION TYPE 2 – CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT – FENCE REMOVE EXISTING WINDOWS AND CLOSE UP OPENINGS AT 1ST ,2ND 3RD FLS &ROOF. REPLACE EXISTING ENTRYDOOR WITH NEW METAL INSULATED SECURITY DOOR INDICATED ON DRAWINGS FILED HEREWITH. NO CHANGE IN USE EGRESS OR OCCUPANCY UNDER THIS APPLICATION.PROVIDE TEMP. WOOD CONSTRUCTION FENCE
If the purpose of this permit is to ostensibly seal off the property, why is there a gaping hole in the roof? Just curious.
Miss Heather
*Which may not always be daily, but will most certainly feature destruction. Be it legally sanctioned or otherwise.

Look very carefully at the truck parked next to this monument company (or click on the above image) to see why I found this so amusing.

THIS WEEKEND: Pig Roast
On Sunday, July 20th, Third Ward will be hosting their 1st Annual Pig Roast & Dance Party. I can’t say I am too enthused about the fare (I am a vegetarian), but cold drinks, flying horseshoes, “high-stakes badminton” and live music are also in the offering. All in all this event sounds like a lot of fun. Be sure to check out the last day of Jeremy Leichman’s show, Suits, while you’re there!
Third Ward

For more information point and click your way over to Third Ward’s web site. On that note, dear readers, methinks I am going out to enjoy this beautiful summer day. You can anticipate more New York Shitty goodness later!

Press Conference At Newtown Creek
Filed under: Bushwick, Dog Shit, Dung of the Day, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Queens, Williamsburg
It got off to a late start but the press conference conducted by Nydia Velazquez, Anthony Weiner* and Joseph Lentol came to pass without a hitch. For those of you who were unable to attend this event, the following footage should give you some idea of its purpose: goading the Federal government to declare the area around Newtown Creek a Superfund site.
Here is the second half where Craig Michaels, legal counsel from Riverkeeper, and Assemblyman Joseph Lentol speak.
It looks like Ms. Velazquez and I agree on two things: the 2008 FISA Amendment Act sucks** and our community has waited long enough for a thorough clean-up of many a score of environmental abuse. 2026 is not good enough. We deserve better.
Miss Heather
P.S.: The new park where this press conference was held (and is still not open to the public) has already been given a hearty Greenpoint welcome!
Doggie dumplings.
*Who laughed when I waved at a passing Watertaxi and exclaimed:
Welcome to one of the most polluted waterways in the United States!
**I originally stated in this post she voted in favor of this act. This is not true. Ms. Velazquez voted against it. It was passed anyway.
Crosstown Local Cavalcade XIII: Fear & Loathing
Filed under: Williamsburg
The mighty G train may very well sport some extra cars and extended rounds this weekend, but little can be said in terms of service. It is abysmal as always. Friday night the Mister decided to sojourn to Long Island City for a steak supper. All went well until it came time to go home: this task entailed a 45 minute wait. The next morning I asked him why he was out so late. The Mister’s answer was as follows:
The G train.
That was all that had to be said. It was understood. I care not to be an enabler but if someone wanted to cheat on his or her significant other, the Crosstown Local offers one of the best excuses for unaccounted time I can think of. Let our wait be your alibi!
And wait we do. Often.
Thankfully God has seen fit to create Sharpie Markers. Thus enabling us to while away the time by indulging in a little social commentary…
or critiquing the angry missives left by our predecessors. Of course not everyone has the privilege of having a marker at his or her disposal.
In which case a ballpoint pen, a willing partner and a little imagination will suffice.

Models Galavanting In Our Misery
Filed under: Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Greenpoint Magic, Long Island City, Queens, Williamsburg
I will not disclose who I received this (forwarded) email from because I like— and much more importantly respect— said person. Regardless, as a citizen who lives in a neighborhood teeming with environmental fuck-ups I do not appreciate the tone of said message. Hence why I am posting it here on New York Shitty:
Thanks for getting back to me… (insert name, lol). I’ve shot at DUMBO already and so has everyone else, it’s considered overdone! The more grittier locations are what’s good for high fashion. Aggregate is like a sand and coal mixture, I think it’s used for paving… anyway, they store this stuff in huge piles so it forms pyramids or mountains and it looks really cool (I attached a few images). The only thing is that I can’t seem to find out where the compounds are…
The cement plant at the Morgan Avenue Stop of the L immediately comes to mind. But if any of you, dear readers, can think of abject sites in Brooklyn (Queens, Staten Island or the Bronx) which complement sinuous models clad in glamorous apparel email me at missheather (at) newyorkshitty (dot) com. I’ll forward them.
