Ugly Made Fugly
When I looked up at this building (located at the intersection of Roebling and Broadway) I thought to myself:
Wow, that’s really ugly!
Yes, I realize that this building is probably being designed with the needs of Hasidim in mind, but what is up with this?
Of course the first two floors being bombed by “Katsu” and others does not help matters.
Could someone please explain to me why someone would do this? And by “this” I mean going to the trouble of filling a fire extinguisher with paint and going to the intersection of Roebling and Broadway to deface a new building? Yes, the above edifice is hideous. BUT— and this is a big but— “bombing” some old industrial building in Billyburg or Greenpoint is one thing, defacing the soon-to-be-home for people you don’t even know is different.
Is this really necessary?

Live Like A Hipster King!
I have become magnificently obsessed with the illegal hotel hostel at 249 Varet Street. I’m serious. I almost want to go down there and spend the night so as to assure myself the New York Loft Hostel is, indeed, for real. When I find advertising copy like the following (from hostelworld.com) it only fans the flames of my burning curiosity.
Ten minutes to Union Square? From Morgan Avenue?!? What the hell are these people smoking? But I guess time doesn’t matter if there is no curfew. That’s what being a “Hipster King” is all about!
You know, when my husband and I eloped we never had a honeymoon. We just ate lunch at Fernando’s Foccaceria, hopped on the G train and went back home. Methinks an extended conjugal visit at the “Mixed Dorm Ensuite”* is just the thing to put the fire back into our marriage!

Debt Collection, Southside Style
Few things things create as much acrimony like the delicate subject of money. A debt unpaid can cause even the best of friends to become the worst of enemies. Given the fact there is an entire industry whose sole purpose is debt collect is a telling testament to how we, the American people, covet our greenbacks. But this option is not be for everyone; collections agencies are out of the reach of many a New Yorker. Fortunately I discovered a novel form of bill collection on the Southside today. It requires no paperwork, no attorneys, no fees or telephone banks. All you need is a can of spray paint.
If the owner of this property (which is located on Keap Street between Broadway and S. 5th Street) is reading this, do the right thing and give “Super” his hard-earned money.
You can hand deliver or mail your certified check or money order (Sorry, no personal checks!) to:
“Super”
359 Broadway (corner of Keap Street)
Brooklyn, New York 11211
Thank you.

Introducing The New York Loft Hostel!
I happened across this flier at the Northside Pharmacy today while running errands. After recoiling from yet another gratuitous use of the grossly over-used term loft, all I could muster in the way of a response was What the fuck?!? As soon I got home I looked at their web site. What I found was quite interesting. Amenities include:
- Free Internet
- Free parking
- Free cable television
- Free long distance calling
- A 2,000 square foot garden replete with jacuzzi and pool is promised in the future
- Manufacturing space for upstairs and downstairs neighbors
Well, I actually learned point #6 by checking out the Department of Buildings’s web site. I guess at $25.00 a night this is a pretty good deal. Unless of course someone beats you senseless at the conveniently located Morgan Avenue stop of the L and steals your wallet.

P.S.: Check out their advertisement on Craigslist! They’ve lowered it to $19.00 a night! WHAT A DEAL!
Lest the previous has been pulled you can see it by clicking here.
Question Of The Day
Let’s pretend for a moment that you are organizing an event at McCarren Park. In this case, Slacro Fest “an eco-conscious fundraiser with all proceeds going to support The Mindfulness Challenge”. You want to get the word out, so you print out a bunch of fliers— and I mean a BUNCH of them. Now it is time to get the word out. You can:
- Post them in the usual places, e.g.; on light poles, fire alarms, storefronts, etc.
- Staple them on trees surrounding McCarren Park
- Both of the above.
If you picked 3 you are absolutely correct, albeit it not environmentally so!
This flier graces a tree on Bedford Avenue.
This flier graces a tree on North 12th Street.
As does this one…
and this one.
Perhaps I am splitting hairs here, but this strikes me as being decidedly NON eco-friendly behavior.
Just a thought.

Greenpoint Hospital To Get A Facelift?
Earlier this week I finally got around to going to Cooper Park. Of all the parks in the Greenpoint vicinity it is by far my favorite. Not only has it been beautifully restored, but its public lavatories is by far the finest to be had hereabouts. There is always an ample supply of toilet paper and the facilities are clean. But I digress.
As I was walking down Maspeth Avenue I noticed the Greenpoint Hospital (which is located across the a street) has been given the Christo treatment.
I was pretty bummed out that the beautiful facade of this building is now concealed. On the other hand if this building is getting a top-to-bottom overhaul, I think this is terrific news! My only question is: What will it be used for? Per the Department of Buildings, it will be “community facility” with parking to accommodate seven cars. The fact St. Nicholas Neighborhood Preservation Corporation now calls the site of the former outpatient annex home definitely lends some credence to this.
It should also be noted that a large number of vehicles for the New York City Department of Homeless Services grace the premises. Perhaps this will be a support center for the unhoused? I suppose only time will tell. In any case I suspect I speak for many when I say I am dying to know what the future will hold for this terrific old complex and will be delighted to see it finally restored to some semblance of its former glory!
