Abandon All Hope…
(ye who enter here)
Today I am proud to announce a small but significant Fedders Friday first. Ordinarily when I spy a building worthy of being given a F.F. nod, it is based on the front of the building alone. This beauty (which hails from Hope Street) first caught my eye just around the corner on Havermeyer.
I know what you’re thinking:
Sure, those balconies (which appear to have had some gray sludge drizzled on them) have a pretty crappy view, but otherwise this isn’t that bad.
Well, in order to truly appreciate this building one must compare the back with the front.
Other than the two huge balconies, they bear no relationship with each other whatsoever. It sort of reminds me of Two Face from Batman Forever.*
Except of course, the Joker was merciful enough not to stick a garage in the middle of Harvey Dent’s kisser. Ouch.

Hipster: The Rock Band
Yesterday afternoon as I walked down Bedford Avenue I realized that the term “hipster” has indeed eaten itself. Once an epithet used by the unimaginative towards affluent 20-somethings, it has since become the nom de guerre for musical entertainers. Entertainers, who in all probability entertain hipsters. Oh, the irony.
For a mere six bucks you can see “Picked Clean By Hipsters” and the up and coming rock-n-roll juggernaut “Manboob”.
For those of you who are less patient, more anarchistic or simply cannot afford to shell out six bucks, the “Reagan Youth”, “Leftover Crack” and “Star F*cking Hipsters” will be playing for free this weekend at Tompkins Square Park.

Another Bar Cometh To Williamspoint
The aptly named Richardson will be located at 451 Graham Avenue, which is at the corner of (drum roll, please)… Richardson Street!
When I walked by last week I took a quick looksee and I have to say it appears that they are doing a very professional job overhauling the space. My only concern is can new bar flourish when there are already so many such establishments to be had in the area already— like the R Bar, which is located just across the BQE?

Urban Gravestones: L’il Rich
Since my buddy over at Bed-Stuy Banana is cavorting around Canada right now I thought I would hit you up with an urban gravestone, north Brooklyn style. Those of you who live or have visited the Southside lately have probably noticed a couple of things:
- A seriously elevated police presence
- The above flier
I found this one on South 3rd Street along with newest urban gravestone to grace the Southside.
It features none other than L’il Rich himself.
Curious to know what happened, I asked a young man busy lighting candles to Rich’s memory what happened. His answer was as follows:
He died.
Was L’il Rich the victim of the latest wave of violence to blight the Southside? Perhaps. What people (myself included) tend to forget while reading about the latest shooting or stabbing is the human cost. While the victims may be nameless and faceless to you and me, they are and will continue to be sorely missed by their friends and loved ones. Nowhere else has this become so apparent to me than the outpouring grief over the death of L’il Rich. Whether he died from natural causes or otherwise is immaterial: he was clearly loved by his friends and neighbors. May he rest in peace.

The Bombing Of South 4th Street
If you want to see one of the most innovative and (reputedly) effective anti-dog doo signs in north Brooklyn, head over to South 4th Street just east of Kent Avenue.
This discovery comes courtesy of my colleague over at Brooklyn11211. He writes:
Amazingly, there was very little poop on the sidewalk here (and usually it is strewn with poop).
I have no idea why this method appears to work while so many others have failed before. Is it the catchy graphics? The rather explicit manner in which it depicts the behavior it wishes to eliminate? The evocation of the Domino Sugar Factory?
Or maybe it is because there are no less than four of these signs gracing this strip.

The Rat King Residence Is Dead
Or at least dying, anyway. Ben writes:
The home of the Rat King is officially coming down. I took this one last Friday… and they’re a bit further along today. My guess is that it’ll be gone by the end of the week. Not sure where he’s living these days, but I have seen him walking around in the neighborhood the past few days.
What will take the place of this house, you ask? It is rather hard to tell. Plans were filed to build a six story condominium but the Department of Buildings said, no, no, no!
And no once more for good measure.
I suppose we will have to wait and see. What I want to know is what the Rat King thinks of all of this.*
