Introducing Neighborhood Watch
No, not that Neighborhood Watch (as enjoyable as it can be). I’m talking about the new blog set up by Neighbors Allied for Good Growth (or NAG). I finally was able to give it a looksee last night and I have to confess that I found a number of very interesting items. Among my personal favorites are this post about the service industry encroaching upon north Brooklyn’s Industrial business zones and an update regarding the troubled Moore Street Market. If what they have written (regarding the latter) does indeed come to pass, it looks like it will get a reprieve!
Do add this site to your “to read” list. You will learn a lot about what’s going on here in north Brooklyn from it! I know I have.

Illegal rooftop terraces, that is. After running errands today a most interesting email was awaiting me when I got home. M writes:
This is one of the owner(s — Andrea Drozd — Ed. Note) of studio B, I used to live one block from “the Delanceyâ€, seems that this is a habit of hers. And the sound proofing never happened.
She sure likes that those rooftops!
Curious to see what “M” was talking about I checked out links she sent me.
And sure enough, Ms. Drozd is mentioned as one of the owners of Juliette. In fact, they have an entire photo set dedicated to their rooftop terrace which— just like its cousin up here in Greenpoint— is neither mentioned in their Certificate of Occupancy nor their Place of Assembly. Both of the previous cover the first floor only.
No wonder she got so disgusted at last week’s Public Safety Committee meeting and complained about how long the city takes to issue permits and conduct inspections; she got away with an illegal rooftop terrace in Williamsburg, why shouldn’t she get away with it here Greenpoint? Permits and waiting are for little people.
I wonder if Ken Fisher offers a bulk discount for his “services”? More importantly, he should be giving me some kind of commission for finding and/or posting this stuff. Seriously.

The Rat King House Is Gone!
The last few days I have been sick. REALLY sick. But that didn’t prevent me from noticing this comment regarding the demise of the Rat King house. Close observant writes August 2, 2008:
The only thing that’s gone is the house.
Feeling better today (and having serious case of cabin fever) I swung by today. Close observant was right! As we all know, before the Rat King relinquished his homestead he took to pigeons.
And they have clearly taken a fancy to him. They’re waiting for him across the street…
next door…
and around the corner.
It was downright eerie. Are all these pigeons (or as Woody Allen once called them “rats with wings”) laying in wait for their leader to return? And as I understand it, he will. Eventually.
I was asked by a (freelance?) writer for the New York Post about the Rat King July 24, 2008. He wrote:
I once contacted you. I’m a reporter with the New York Post.
I’m interested in what’s going on with the Rat King’s House. I’ve never heard of the Rat King, except from reading about him on your blog.
Do you know his name? Do you know how I can get a hold of him?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Whoa!
I am not journalist by education. New York Shitty is my avocation. Why do I do it? Because I want to know what’s going on here and wish to share my findings with others. This “hobby” of mine demands that I pound the pavement 3-4 days a week. It is a labor of love. Why would/should I tender my findings to a reporter who will (undoubtedly) be compensated for exploiting my work?
Do your own damned investigating!

Kitten Cavalcade!
As many of you recall last winter was decidedly not very wintery at all. While to most of us this entailed little-to-no frolicking in the snow or grim meditations upon the effects of global warming, it also had serious ramifications for the stray cat population: a boom in kittens.
Nowhere was this more evident than during my visit to Empty Cages Collective yesterday afternoon. They are up to their eyeballs in adoptable fur kid goodness! If you watch very carefully at the end of the video you will notice the picture jerks a little. That’s because a certain little black and white grand stander grabbed the cord on my camera!
Anyone interested in giving any of these kittens (or their equally lovable adult counterparts) a home should contact Empty Cages Collective at emptycagescollective (at) gmail (dot) com.

THIS WEEKEND: Stop The Violence
Although this has already been mentioned by a number of my colleagues I feel compelled to pass it along here. This Saturday, August 2, starting at 5:00 p.m. there will be a rally to stop the violence that has become all too common on the Southside of late. Even if you don’t live in the area I strongly recommend you turn out to show your support. Let’s work together to make urban gravestones (such as that for L’il Rich) a thing of the past!
