Williamsburg Photo du Jour: Belong

While not on par with the “Jack Heights” advertising campaign, I thought this one (for 72 Steuben) was equally misguided. These have been popping up all over Williamsburg of late.
As it would happen I have been to Clinton Hill recently. It did not strike me as being the kind of place twenty-somethings who boost Colt 45 from bodegas and have a disquieting likeness to Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver* would call home.** There are too many people wearing sensible shoes and pushing strollers in Clinton Hill. I imagine their selection of malt liquor ain’t so hot either. Just a thought.

Presenting The Heckscher Community Garden
Filed under: Williamsburg
As I mentioned yesterday East Williamsburg sports a number of community gardens. The crown jewel of them all is easily the Heckscher Community Garden on Scholes Street. When I walked by yesterday they were busy at work mowing and culitivating, so I went in to take a peek.
The work these people have done is really impressive.
This little grotto makes you almost forget you are in the city.
Here are the volunteers hard at work. The woman manning the lawn mower is a Greenpointer!
And what would a garden be without a gnome to preside over it?
Those of you who are looking for something free to do tonight might be interested to know they will be showing Step It Up 2 this evening. Yeah, the movie sounds kind of crappy but at least you will enjoy it (or not) while luxuriating in one damned nice park. The show starts at 8:00 p.m., so pack your lawn chair, fill up the cooler and head on down to 136 Scholes Street! It’s absolutely free!

THIS WEEKEND: More Food Pantry Goodness
Nicole of the Church of the Ascension writes:
Miss Heather,
I know you write about the Reformed Church’s food pantry. But just wondered if you wouldn’t mind posting about a canned food drive for another food pantry in the neighborhood. The Church of the Ascension will be collecting canned food goods for its food pantry this weekend in Williamsburg and in a couple weeks at Key Food.
We are in need of cans of tuna, vegetables and soup. We will be at TOPS in Williamsburg on Saturday and Sunday August 9th and 10th, from 1-5pm. We will be at Key Food on Saturday and Sunday August 23rd and 24th, from 12-6pm.
If any of your readers would like to make donations of food or funds we’d appreciate it. The food pantry has been operating for 30 years and as I am sure you have experienced with the Reformed Church the number of people we serve is on the rise.
Thanks.

East Williamsburg’s Summer Of Love
Awakening to a beautiful day (by August standards, anyway) I decided to knock off work and take a relaxing walk. My instincts told me to go to East Williamsburg. It has been my experience that there are always interesting things to be found in this neighborhood. Today was no exception. As you will see.
East Williamsburg is tops when it comes to community gardens. This tableau makes my hard little Garden Spot heart green with envy.
While The Garden Spot of the Universe might aspire to be the next Garden of Eden, someone on Garden Street has already achieved a state of primordial innocence. Good for him. East Williamsburg: 2. Greenpoint: 0.
But when you get right down to it, East Williamsburg and Greenpoint have a great deal in common. Take tony wine stores and pet boutiques, for example.
Or a glut of luxury condominiums (like these on Stagg Street). Been there, done that.
And lest we forget: bedbugs. This has got to be the best warning for a piece of bedbug infested furniture I have ever seen. The street cone is an inspired touch. That’s the one thing I have to hand to our neighbors to the south; they’re very considerate and terrifyingly creative.
This makes me feel right at home.
And when all words fail, East Williamsburg (being the artistic haven it is) more than makes up for it by fabricating objects to show their affection.
Fuck casseroles or cakes. This is the best damned condo-warming present ever!
