From The New York Shitty Inbox, Part II: A Question About Khims

L (who sent the above photographs) writes:

My boyfriend and I were picking up some snacks at the Khim’s Millennium Market on Driggs Avenue this afternoon, and after getting about halfway through our sesame sticks, he noticed that the label looked a little….thick. So, he started to peel back the top label, et voila, there was another underneath! But where the first had a “packed on” date of 05.08.10 and “sell by” date of 08.05.10, the second was packed on March 8th, to be sold by May 6th! And it came from a different store location, the one on Graham Avenue. Going for broke, he started to peel back the second label to find YET ANOTHER ONE. Turns out these snacks were originally packed back on January 14th, with a sell-by date of March 14th. This, too, was from Graham Avenue. (Interestingly, the ingredients, weight, and prices change with each sticker.) Now, we know that “sell by” and “expiration” dates aren’t the same thing, and these crackers clearly hadn’t gone bad–they weren’t even stale. Still, “sell by” should mean “sell by“, right? Maybe there’s a reasonable explanation for this…but we took pictures anyway, and thought we’d send them in.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is they’re reusing the packaging. I have no idea if this practice is legal or not but the implications are pretty disturbing. Thoughts, anyone?

Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.

No Dot, you’ve arrived in one of the coolest ‘hoods in New York City: East Williamsburg, May 12, 2010.

Dorothy:

Do you suppose we’ll meet any wild animals?

Scarecrow: Mm, we might.
Scarecrow: Animals that eat… s-traw?
Tin Woodsman: Some, but mostly lions, and tigers, and bears.
Dorothy: Lions?
Scarecrow: And tigers?
Tin Woodsman: And bears.

The Garden Spot has raccoons, skunks and even a dolphin! The only wildlife I, dear child, have spotted here is this kitty. She strikes me as being harmless. Perhaps Toto should make her acquaintance?

She holds court next door: 55 Orient Avenue.

I have written this twice before and I’ll write it once again:

I strongly believe people respond to the environment around them. This is why I am a big fan of public art especially in our subway system. Gestures as grand as a mosaic or as simple as keeping public facilities neat and clean send a positive message. The vigilance (or this case, lack thereof) with which our municipal government enforces the laws put in place to preserve our, the citizenry’s, quality of life speaks volumes about their attitude as public servants.

This is unacceptable. No one should have to live with this.

New York Shitty Slide Show Du Jour: Underneath The Greenpoint Hospital

(Or more accurately: its Outpatient Annex.)

As I mentioned in this post the folks at St. Nick’s are having an open call for artists. Well, as promised today I took a tour of the space they are converting into an art and performance space. All things said it is very much a work in progress. Having just completed asbestos abatement, they can now move forward finishing the space. This is not to suggest that one cannot see the potential: you can. The main area would be perfect as a performance or installation space, to cite just one example. In addition, it was really neat to poke around the labyrinth of rooms, closets and antechambers in their pre-rehabilitated state. If you are into urban decay you are going to love this photo set. Enjoy!

Anyone interested in proposing an on-site installation or performance, wants to submit work for their open call or simply has questions about this space should contact Laura McLelland @ lmclelland (at) stnicksalliance (dot) org. Oh yeah, be sure to read the submission specs and requirements first!

Those of you who have yet to check this out really should— it’s a lot of fun. What’s more, it is for  good cause; it’s a fundraiser for P.S. 132!

New York Shitty Day Starter: Picnic?

Jay Lombard (who forwarded this McCarren Park still life) to me opines:

If fire isn’t allowed inside the park was this salmon prepared tartar? Maybe sashimi? Either way it looks like a feast was had and they left plenty behind – gotta work on those knife skills.

Agreed. The stuff of “Top Chef” this most decidedly isn’t. This is individual could also use a little boning up (no intention) on his (or her) sign reading skills as well. Makes me think of a song…
