Huron Street Kittens Update: Jerzy!

A number of people have asked me about the kittens that were found dumped next to a bunch of garbage cans last month by a very good Samaritan named Sarita. There were initially four, two being one week old and the other two being approximately four weeks old. The two younger ones regrettably— but not surprisingly— died. This left a brother and sister which we named Anna and Jerzy. In regards to them I have some good news and some bad news: Anna has died. Lisa has no idea what happened. She simply woke up one morning and Anna was gone. If there is any consolation about this sad passing of events it is:

  1. At least Anna spent what little time she had being loved and cared for as instead simply dying on the street like so many stray/abandoned kittens do.
  2. Her brother Jerzy is happy and healthy. He has tested negative for feline leukemia and FIV!

Here’s Jerzy the day he was found: April 13, 2010.

And here he is after a very exhausting “play session” at Muddy Paws yesterday!

Lisacat writes: …He is so damned cute right now. Super feisty, eating great, eyes cleared up, good poops, etc. I’ll test him for felv/fiv before Sunday, I think he’s going to be amazing!

But don’t take her word for it. Here is Jerzy having a grand old time!

In closing I would like to thank everyone once again for their generous donations towards Jerzy’s medical care. It took several weeks of antibiotics and TLC but as you can see it was money well spent. I agree with Lisa: he is going to be a very remarkable guy!

Spotted On North 12 Street: Witnesses Wanted

When I see fliers such as this my heart sinks. Granted, there are a fair number of negligent bicyclists to be found on our streets. I complain about them. Often. However, they are child’s play compared to the influx of cabs and livery drivers who now negotiate north Brooklyn’s streets. I have seen their driving personally on multiple occasions. It is terrifying. If you or anyone you know witnessed the above-described accident please call Mike. Fault-finding and accusations aside, all parties involved need to know what happened.

On a related note, I was (fairly) recently contacted by a gentlemen who is interested in speaking to anyone who might have witnessed Solange Raulston’s untimely death on McGuinness Boulevard last year. His name is Dave and you can reach him at:

P.S.: These are the coolest fairy wings I have ever seen. I half-joked to this lovely (and very focused) lass’s mother that I would buy them for $50.00. Nothing doing.

When this young lady arrived with her family at the Gibson after the Kite Fest, well, I simply had to get a shot of her kite. She told me she made it herself and (I quote) “it didn’t fly very well”. Given there was little wind (at least when I arrived, anyway) I assured her it was due to no fault of her own— and that her creation was quite nifty. Besides, if I remember correctly the original had such problems. This, in my (admittedly dorky) opinion only lends to its authenticity.

If you want reliability you go with an X-Wing… or Tie Fighter.

LAST GASP: It’s My Park Day At Red Gate Garden

I am certain many of you are all too aware that tomorrow is Kite Day at McCarren Park. What you may not know is that Red Gate (AKA: Nick’s Garden, which has been the source of controversy lately) will be open tomorrow from noon until 4:00 p.m. For those of you who have wondered about this Green Thumb garden this is an excellent opportunity to check it out, meet the people behind it and learn how you can get involved. Otherwise, I have it on very good intelligence that the Red Gate peeps are working on an online presence where you can get more information about the park, e.g.; its history, hours and much much more! In the meantime why not swing by tomorrow, see it in person and say “hi”?
